Two Buck Chuck comparison tasting (San Francisco) : Darker color than the 2005 and 2012, but still quite pale; nose is completely gone; palate shows significant oxidation, some very faint residual red fruit, not much else. Too old.

Very strong fruity aroma as soon as the cork left the bottle. Left to breathe for a bit, it tasted of raspberry, cherry, oak and saw dust. Never expect much from Chuck, but after nearly 10 years forgotten in the wine rack, this wasn't a disappointment.

Nearly unbelievable, but this thing actually held up its' end after being pulled from the back of the cellar! It hadn't died and truly seemed to have benefited from being left alone. No distinguishing characteristics to be found, just a simple red table wine that drank well with a simple meal. Money well spent, and lesson in tasting fairly before judging driven home, again.

a kind of funky jolly rancher, off-balanced, watery currant wine. eh. for $3 ... drink it to get drunk. other than that ... ummm

clear garnet / purple color. nose has a yeasty dough smell, grain, birdfeed. over a few days smells of broccoli, cabbage, and asparagus with hints of mustard evolved. light mouthfeel with fake sugary aspect. sour cherry, pomogrante, pepper and caramel flavors and a hint of mildew. finished with smooth tannins.

Two Buck Chuck gets a bad rap...although maybe that's just knee-jerking to the garages full of the wine that you see driving through many affluent suburban neighborhoods, tucked in behind the Lexus SUVs and kids' scooters. Really not that bad. Light red in color, but the acidity seems unbalanced. Have had other years of 2BC, but the 2001 is the best, IMO. Hint of green bell pepper mixed with a background of distant vanilla--but still comes across as fairly sweet. I can buy 20 cases of this instead of one bottle of a 2005 first growth. Hmmm....this just tells me there is a huge middle ground.

2001 California Cabernet tasting (Montelena, Insignia, Pride, Paloma, Neal, etc.) (San Marcos, Texas) : This was Wine Number 6. The lightest color of all wines tasted. The nose was full with non Cabernet aromas of sweet strawberries and cinammon. Medium bodied and very sweet, with a siyrupy, Hawain Punch taste. This was clearly picked as the Two Buck Chuck. It ranked last in my list and in almost everybody's.

This is not my first bottle of "Two Buck Chuck." Every since my California Brother-in-law alerted me to this buy and we connected with a Trader Joe's, we've developed a chummy friendship.
