Superb price quality Deep purple color Intense aromas of black berries, black plum, but already transforming to jammy character, spices, smoke and vanilla, a little of lemon zest, dry herbs and flowers, slate. Medium complexity Super strong tannins (too much to my taste)

Very nice - at 12 years old this still feels fresh even if the fruit is receding a bit. Vanilla, black cherry, plum, blackberry. High acidity, lovely mouthfeel and a long finish.

Drank from 375. Pop and pour. Opened tight but unfurled quickly with air. Very pleasant wine. Not super complex but really well made and satisfying red. Held up well to meatballs in red sauce.

It has a full and big frame. High on all aspects. I think this needs to shed some of its weight because for now i dont think its performing optimally. I hope future proves me right.

Best red on the table. In a great place with silky fruit and harmonious secondary development.

Similar to prior notes, except the tannins were well offset by our pairing: cheeseburgers off the grill. Good combo.

Had opened the same one last year, was not great. Right now after 11 years, the aromas were great, and the wine was smooth. Unfortunately my last bottle.

PNP. Smooth and plush red and dark cherry fruit is balanced nicely by integrated oak, faint black pepper spice, along with hints of tobacco, vanilla, and coffee grinds. Just enough acidity is present to bring it all together and keep the wine lively and fresh. Delicious and ready to drink. Muga is always a solid producer.

Drank as part of a practice tasting with my WSET Level 3 group. APPEARANCE: Ruby in color, with medium intensity. NOSE: Medium intensity. Detected floral (rose), black fruit (blackberry) and bottle age (leather, forest floor) aromas. This wine is developing. PALATE: Dry, with medium(+) acidity/tannin/body/flavor intensity/finish. High alcohol (14.5%, although I thought it was medium). Detected black fruit (blackcurrant, black cherry), oak (cedar), fruit development (cooked blackberry) and bottle age (leather, tobacco) flavors. CONCLUSIONS: This is a very good wine. …

Tasting Ground official tasting, Blind tasting #13 (Oinoscent) : 70% Tempranillo 20% Garnacha Tinta 7% Mazuelo 3% Graciano, 14.50% In the nose, the wine shows heavy oak treatment, dusty, planky, ripe to overripe black fruit, very old world-like, VA/varnish notes Palate follows the pattern, overripe red and black fruit, tight tannins, angular still, loads of tannins from the oak, long finish not that pleasant for me at this point

Notes similar to last Feb note, but the tannins seem particularly intrusive tonight. Paired with pork and dried plum stew, so tannins not an issue until sipping after dinner.

🐽 sweet red berry, like a cherry or strawberry jolly rancher 👅 Concentrated red cherries, juicy, maybe not destemmed as there is a nice barely-there greeness or tea backing the fruit, quite tannic. A pleasant, easy drinking, quality crianza.

I have been hanging on to this 375mL and had a Friday night alone to enjoy it with a grilled ribeye. Drinking well and enjoyable. Not worth current prices but I bought the 375 for $13.99 5 years ago. Should hold right where it is at or potentially improve modestly over the next 5 years.

cheers - good, but not aging like I hoped this Muga would....2014 wasn't a great year for this area and it's showing up more now....just a little rough and missing the smooth balance I'd expect at 10 years

Very enjoyable wine from this consistently excellent producer. Tasted alongside a 2021 Psi Ribera del Duero. This was more mellow and fruity on the palate; has aged nicely. The Psi is still a bit tight and more age-worthy.

Deep, garnet-ruby, pure-bright tones and clearing at the edges. Red currant & black plum fruit aromas, with allspice, sandalwood, black tea, paprika, and leather. Fresh and ripe on the palate, showing consistent currant fruit with black cherry, nicely integrated secondary black licorice, clove, fresh herb, tobacco and violet depth. Medium-to-full, with succulent and juicy acid, finishing with full ripe tannins with moderate closing length of zesty dark fruit, florals and iron.

Another wine from a UK election year. Still a youthful-ish dull ruby colour. Closed at first, but opens deliciously. Smoky, leather, plums - intense. This is still really young - loads of tannin make it feel powerful yet tight, along with that oak and leather.

Drinking well right now with 2-3 hours of air. Could use more time in the bottle for some more integration of all the components, and perhaps it will take less time to really open up well. Great for 30 bucks US - a great gateway to modern Rioja. Also a great gateway to Muga’s upper end stuff (which both the Prada and the Torre age, despite being made differently)

Dark ruby in the glass. Aromas and flavours are a bit muted at first. Notes of dark cherry, plum, maybe a bit of liquorice. Feels tight and youthful with a fair bit of tannic power. Hoping it opens up in the glass/bottle with some time. Right now it needs food. I imagine this will improve with time. One more in cellar, but I’m going to wait five years.

Standup tasting with Juan Muga. Rich black and red cherry with fairly big scaled fruit that seems slightly "bigger" than classic Rioja to me. Big tannins for now, too. Good weight and depth, I will be interested in seeing how this all comes together from 2027 forward.

TWS Rioja tasting (Chelsea Old Town Hall) : Still unwinding and overall it feels very young. A touch of VA and cherry, plum fruit. It may be going through a dumb phase (but then all of the Muga wines had a similarly solid, closed character) but I found it rather inexpressive. Tarry finish.

Cedar nose plus some dark berry notes. Still a blockbuster wine after 24 hours open after decant. Big acid and tannins still evident. Blackberry fruit with a strong licorice note is evident. The finish is lengthening as the tannins have finally begun to soften. Overall the wine is tasty but I was expecting more complexity. Still a fine wine with a lot of life.

Nice bouquet of a typical Rioja, vanilla, oak and a slight peppery tone. We had a mildly spiced sauce to the food that didn't went so well with the acidity, wich is still vibrant in the wine. Decant, 2h airating and avoid spicy food and it's very good now. The oxidation is there but will develop the next coming 2-3 yrs.
