Consistent with previous note, perhaps come round a touch? Pure berry fruit wrapped in lots of earth, spice, menthol. Still lots of structure but it’s softened a bit and the pure fruit is more to the fore today. Almost… pretty? Could be a couple more years in bottle, could just be the bottle… but this seems more ready to drink than the last one.

Retains colour; this was meaty & edgy; grumpy, stern, old school. Someone said this was too young. The previous bottle seven years ago was more enjoyable but needed time. Well it's not ageing gracefully. too old, IMO. And fortunately none remain.

Jason & Simon's Village Burgundy Tasting Dinner (67 Pall Mall) : Something not quite right here - a certain monolithicness to the tannins while the fruit seems to have been cooked away. Again, I was in a minority with my perception on this so perhaps I am an unreliable Volnay taster.

Village Burgundy from Good Producers (67 Pall M) : More redcurrant fruit on the nose here than the 2009 it's served alongside. With air some chestnut sweetness and a little bresaola. Something odd about this and once again the palate is tight and uncompromising.

This is the best 2005 I have had. All the others have not been ready and concerning about the tannins overpowering the drying fruit. As a village wine it is structured, but has come into balance. More like a Beaune than a Volnay, but that is what mother nature gave us.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL) : Served double blind. Herbal and green, with moderate palate weight, but quite a bit of astringency and even enough pyrazine that I initially thought that this was a cabernet franc. Somewhat charmless wine with the fruit on vacation, displaying only rustic, backwards tannin. Another disappointing 2005 red Burgundy -- why bother with the vintage when there are so many better options out there?

Reticent on the nose: brooding ripe black fruit, stone, menthol, boot polish. With air and time some cherries and raspberries emerge. On the palate tons of delicious elegant blackberry and cherry fruit wrapped in an austere tannic and acidic frame. But the tannins are very fine and the balance is good. Decanted for 2 hours. Served blind in a flight of 3 red burgundies from 2005. Lafarge Volnay Vendage Selectiones, Chevillon NSG Les Saint Georges and Maume Mazis Chambertin. The Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux VV was badly corked. Least favorite wine, this was muted on the nose, with a bit of spicy cranberry/red fruit. Very clenched and drying palate, linear and not very giving, almost austere without a lot of energy or complexity.

There is fruit. There is tannin. But I am not sure the tannins will resolve/soften before the fruit gives up. At present it is a "tough" wine. Future?

Lovely though it is showing the vintage and is a bit burly for a Lafarge. Just some hints of secondary notes but still lots of fruit and structure. Probably would ideally have a couple more years of age.

I am a big fan of Lafarge but somehow didn't love this wine as much as others. I thought that as it's from 2005 and it's their best selection for the village wine it would be fantastic about now. And it was good, it just seemed a little muddled/disjointed to me in this bottle. The fruit was quite dark and broad, and tannins still very present. Just didn't hvae the lift and elegance I was looking for.

Popped and poured. Deep red, no sign of aging yet. Cranberry spice, some earth on the nose. Not very giving. Tight palate, still clenched but starting to soften. Has that electric fruit from 05, and will be a village wine that goes 30 years.

Small glass, brief note. An excellent Villages level Volnay, just seemingly emerging from its "2005" shell. Floral start with faint earth hints plus red, black and blue berry throughout. Good weight with sneaky structure and impressive length for its level. Good now through 2030.

I love this vintage and this wine is no exception. The terroir and vintage standout. If what you enjoy is the richest wines in the best vintages, this is not for you. If you love what mother nature has to offer and a good Cab Franc this wine is for you. Great food wine if you pair what it is with what works with it. The 3/27 Lafarge Tasting - Most interesting wine of the 6. This went through 3 different phases in the glass over 4+ hours. It was odd with a briney pickle note, green ashtray aromas, minerals and tannic at first. As everything integrated the fruit came out and became woven into the other flavors. Transparent rød med oransje kant. Utviklet aroma med preg av høstløv, skogbunn, nype, røde bær og lakris. I munn er den fast med tydelig tannin og balansert syre. Oppleves mindre kompleks på smak en aroma. Tørrer litt i en lang finish. Dette er en vin som drikker best sammen med mat som demper syre/tannin nivået litt.

Kinda earthy on the nose with black raspberry at the end. Medium bodied with soft tannins and forest fruit all through the palate. A nice wine that might become more delicate and nuanced, but I'm thinking it is likely at the best that it is going to show for a village wine. A good value for a top producer though.

Brick red in colour. Blueberry on the nose, touch of briar. Fruit still on palate but moving towards "tertiary" stage with savoury tea tones and some oxidative sweetness evident. Good length.

Positive colour; floaty bouquet, underscored by a fruity crunch & stalky edge; compact, brusque, stern, yet to fully open but has a good depth of latent fruit. Structured. If this develops properly will become a nifty wine. Leave alone for 5+ years.

Dull medium red. Austere, earthy nose. Light to medium weight. Slow unfolding of dark cherry fruit atop a high acid, soil base. Typical highly structured Lafarge, not easy or sweet at all, but not that tannic. A bit of VA that was not troublesome. In the end, with time, very good. No rush to open even this village level wine.

Medium ruby. Whoa, this started very slowly with some red fruit on the nose but tight, lean, and very dry in the mouth (think of a young Angerville Taillepieds, for example). Two hours later, it was a completely different wine. Now there were mixed cherry/strawberry aromatics and some rose petal, the feel was much better, and the fruit really blossomed. Burgs & Barolos (Bronte) : red cherry colour. not very expressive nose, lacks the volnay florals, or any florals really. red cherry, plenty of tannin that is slightly firm, reasonably good drinking but lacks personality. 2 bottles tried just in case this was a cork issue, but consistent notes.
