Domaine La Garrigue, Cotes du Rhone, Cuvee Romaine

Leaf Day - fill excellent, cork sound with little ingress from the wine. Double decanted off about a tablespoon of sediment. Garnet in the glass. Nose is incredible - definitely garrigue with dark fruit, forest floor and red flowers. On the palate it’s the same with full body, resolved tannins, medium acidity and full mouthfeel. Still showing lots of fruit. A Côtés du Rhône doesn’t get much better than this.

Bought 6b for 13/b from a local independent shop 9+ years ago; this is #3. Rich purple; mature red fruit, bit of barnyard that follow on the palate, some spiciness, good mouthfeel. Hold well but no need to wait. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. Quality, age, price: Notable+.

Fascinating previous reviews, I had a fizzy bottle too. But the next one was a nice rhone, still young and tannic. Better things to come, if you can miss the fizz

2010 vintage

I have had this wine on a few occasions and have experienced the sour fizziness described by several other tasters. I believe that there is a high incidence of malolactic fermentation taking place in many bottles. CO2 is liberated in the ML process leading to the fizz. The sour taste is attributed to the lactic acid. Luckily, this level of sloppy winemaking is a rarity today.

A decent table wine. felt that most 2010's could age even at this level and feel I was right on this one. the tannins I encountered when I had this a few years back are fully integrated. Nice quality for the price. No one component of the bled overpowered any other.

- Garnet color with fast forming legs. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of raspberry with a medium body. Leathery texture with a short finish.

Even tastier than recent bottles. Seems to be on an upward swing, so I'm moving back drink year to 2017. Dark cherries and bright fruit on the nose. Bright fruit also along the palate with a juicy acidity. tobacco finish.

My last bottle of this and this was absolutely wretched. It smelled like crap and had tons of burning heat throughout. Really went down hill since my last bottle over 5 years ago, which I quite enjoyed.

Tons of sediment, should probably be kept upright for a day or so before drinking. Had a strange fizzy quality to it, though not sure that's a quality per sé. Overall flavor was quite interesting though.

This is brutally tannic right out of the bottle but softens after 3-4 days in the re-corked bottle. Overall this tastes like cherry liquor with leather and tar. Quite tasty, although slightly over-extracted and tannic.

Bought this about 5 years ago for my in-laws, in an effort to build a small stock of wines for them... and noticed it still in their basement as we visited for Thanksgiving. Some nice funk on the nose, but thin in the mouth with the tannins dominant a bit too quickly for me. I'm going to check on this tomorrow as I bet it will have resolved itself. My initial reaciton is this should benefit from another few years of cellaring.

Both this and another erstwhile favorite from European Cellars (Andezon CDR) have in recent vintages shown enormous irregularity from bottle to bottle. That "fizzy" sensation is a flaw not a characteristic of the wine when it is properly bottled and/or stored. I've returned cases of both wines to the places of purchase as a result. And these merchants are quite reliable. So the fault lies elsewhere.

One previous tasting note described this as having "raw power.". I have to agree, this is very rustic with aromas of wet leather, musk and cherries. The palate on this wine is fantastic yet old-world in style showing sour cherries and not much else. The tannins grip your palate relentlessley but never seem bitter or off-balance. This would be an 88-90 for me with a bit more acidity and depth-of-flavor.

There are some things to like about the 2010; plenty of ripe fruit and perfumy garrigue notes. However the 14.5% ABV is unfortunately a bit evident and the wine desperately needs more of an acid backbone than it has. Tannins are soft and the overall impression is a bit flabby. Very nice Rhone style red with the great fruit of granache balanced by a good acidity and a licorice and peppery taste. Some mineral notes too. Was not that impressed with my first bottle but this second one was great. Great price per value.

The nose showed cherry, earthy minerals, alpine herbs and a whiff of pepper. On the palate it was at first fizzy, but as this faded in the glass it revealed notes of soft ripe cherry and herbs. The finish was a bit drying yet remained fresh.

I was surprised to see all the negative comments. There must be some bottle variation, as my bottle was quite nice. While not as good as previous vintages, this still showed good, cool-toned red fruit, herbs and a hint of earth. Not much of a nose and a bit clipped in the finish, but good balance and texture on the palate.

Much, much better than the 09. Smooth, silky tannins at this young age. A little heat, but not overwhelming. Cherry, wet wood.

This bottle seemed rather closed on the palate and on the nose. Rather disappointing. Nice dry and almost powdery tannins in the finish, but otherwise rather nondescript.

Popped and poured. Medium-plus hazy ruby. Initial aromatics show quite a bit of earthy funk, within 20-30 mintues the nose opens up to show a classic Côtes du Rhône profile of black raspberry, toast, earth, and a pronounced note of dried Herbes de Provence. This has aged nicely for an inexpensive Rhone. I wish I had more, but I do have several from '07 which ought to be getting near peak.

Nose a bit funky with barnyard (which blew off right away) and blackberry jam. Mostly minerals and tannins on palate. Fairly thin mouth feel with moderate finish. People seemed to like, at least they drank a lot;went very well with grilled rib eyes.

Medium ruby red core fading slightly near the rim. Developing nose of red fruits, custard and vegetal funk. Dark cherries and spice flavours in the mouth which are slightly overpowered by the structure. Tart finish. Drink now. Very good.

Pop and pour. What a pleasant surprise - I don't hold many rhones and this was not only very good but one of the top QPRs of the year. Slight pepper on the nose accompanied by ripe red fruits. Very smooth-tasting wine, tanin level indicates that there isn't much time left (6-18 months) in what I have to imagine is the peak of its drinking window.

Rather subtle aromas with a big tannic palate. Cool styled tannins with a somewhat drying finish, but overall very good. (87-88)
