Weingut Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Auslese

What a treat to enjoy a 30 year old bottle of Riesling from the great Thörnicher Ritsch vineyard and made by the one and only Hermann Ludes. Very fine and quite fresh with a beautiful lightness that made this so fun to drink. Tropical fruit, dried figs, and a waxy honey quality that was so delicious. Notes of wet slate grounded this and reminded me of the mountain from which it came.

So fresh and seductive. Reminds me of whipped cream, mango, green apples and lime. Not a lot of petrol here. Excellent stuff!

Decanted for 1.5 then back into bottle and brought to restaurant. Note is 3h after decant. Lovely aromas of pineapples, peaches, minerals, and herbs. Palate is similar with ripe pineapples, unripe peaches, lovely minerals and herbs. Fantastic acids are a perfect foil the the ripe, but not overripe fruit. Medium body with excellent concentration. Drinking more along the lines of current kabinett to spatlese in terms of fruity sweetness. Lovely and complex.

The cork was slight pushed out and the level mid-neck was a clear indication this bottle had seepage. However, with German Riesling this is rarely an issue and this was no exception. Lovely cool white flowers and stone fruit notes. Very balanced, defying its age. Lovely, muted sweetness, great food wine.

Entering maturity, this show perfect balance and structure - and tasted vis-a-vis the 2010, it seems to have the same look, the same vertical feel and precision - just with more years behind. Has lemon, minerals, no hints og petrol, a vibrant acdity - year to go. #from MB #Clape night

A bit light on petrol notes, but a perfect example of an aged Mosel. Nice fruit, acid, and long finish. Some tropical fruit notes, slate, and honey with just a hair of lanolin. My best wine of the year thus far.

My note on this got deleted due to my phone being active in my pocket - random clicks. Oh well. This was classic with petrol on the nose to start, apples and some tropicals with great hints of lime. It integrated well after a few days and was just lovely. A bit drier than one might expect but that's nota bad thing at all.

Very good Auslese. Great balance between the residual sugar, the acidity and the alcohol, it is now showing it youthness. 26 years and this wine is now at the top of its game.

This bottle had a distinct note of lime that wasn't present in a previous bottle. After 25+ years some bottle variation is not surprising, and this was still excellent.

Beautiful nose of marmalade and apple cider. On the palate, peach, orange marmalade, pineapple, and notes of ginger and apricot on the medium to long finish, with good acidity that almost balances out noticeable sweetness. This is clearly affected by botrytis, but it isn't so sweet that it's just a dessert wine. This was a very good to excellent value at about $45.

Dinner at Canard (Canard, Portland OR) : The nose is rich, deep, and well layered with peaches, red apples, honey, pears, nectarines, quince, yellow flowers, and ginger. Old apple cider. Clearly aged riesling. It seemed so muted in expression. Brown sugar tart quince apple crisp with lime zest? But very light. I had this with pan roasted monkfish in a lemon cream sauce.

Tasted blind. Undoubtedly Mosel, auslese level concentration but quite reserved and structured. I detected physalis on the palate. Tasting much younger than it a age.

Luscious pineapple and stones. Outstanding wine but it fought for attention with the brown butter scallops at Christmas lunch. Pair with smoked fish so it can shine on its own.
