Clos Coutale, Cahors

opened this with a group of neophyte wine drinkers who had never had a Cahors before. Everyone loved it! It still had medium-weight body with plenty of pretty blue and black fruit and paired beautifully with the sirloin filet. There was a bit of sediment and the tannins had resolved well. I was a bit surprised it drank as well as it did but that's why we store them properly, right?

A really delightful rustic and leathery , earthy, black cherries, medium tannins, anise, nice spice.

The wine looks purple colored. Attractive, mature with hint of fine spices . The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry. It tastes like cherry. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

Well balanced, acid minus. Good structure but lacks charm.

Still in great drinkable condition at 13 years of age, from a half-bottle. Dark plum, leather and mineral notes. Very durable and well made.

FWS Bordeaux and Southwest tasting 2020; 7/21/2020-7/22/2020 : This wine is just starting to open up. Cahors often need 10+ years to settle down, and even this wine at $20 needs years to really drink properly. Dark fruit driven with some bloody and roasted meat aromas. I found this youthful and a nice surprise as far as quality. Opened up over the course of the dinner and the last glass was the best. Showed nice dark fruit with a touch of earthiness and tannic grip. Decent finish,good acidity. Would buy again.

Acid minus with ripe fruit. Secondary flavors, but not much of tertiary flavors. Not sur if lack of enough acidity allows for the wine to stay alive to develop tertiary flavors.

Despite the Kermit Lynch endorsement, we found this wine close to undrinkable. Dark, dense, octopus black-ink color. Very closed showing more bramble than berry. Sharp, narrow and tannic in the mouth. Think chunky. The finish is more a punch than a sweet kiss goodbye. Smooth and quite restraint. Quite the opposite when tasted 2 years ago. Aroma and flavour profiles are similar with dark fruits (blackcurrants, black cherries, plum), oak and earthy spice. Medium bodied, well integrated tannins and alcohol. Good balance.

- Brick color - Dark, inky color with deep earthy overtones, surprisingly smooth yet with a bold woody finish. A very nice malbec-blend for the price point. Complimented a beef stew very well. Interesting note; even though stored impeccably in a wine cooler, the wine had seeped completely through the cork.

Decent initial impression, but hollowed out mid-palate. Highly tannic. Not a favorite. Tasted alongside the 08 which showed much better.

A little worried at first due to the cork disintegrated as I opened the bottle. However, it had a nice aroma with a fruity nose. The soft tannins and velvety mouth feel made this a real winner. Wish I had more.

Color: Dark center with purple red edges. Nose & Palate: Rose petals, some iron and earth, blackberry, great fruit depth, ample acidity and wonderfully fine grained tannins. A touch of dusty lilacs and roasted herbs taper off with the finish. Easy drinking and complex enough to keep you interested. This is a wonderful Malbec at a great price.

alle drie de kurken waren tot boven toe volgezogen. Ik vreesde dus voor oxidatie, gelukkig onterecht. Mooie Cahors in het lichtere genre: vrij korte afdronk, niet zeer gecorseerd in tegenstelling tot zijn zeer donkere kleur. Geslaagde combinatie. Waren laatste flessen.

An interesting wine which strikes me as a blend of Rhone and Bordeaux - the nose shows some grenache-like red fruits and syrah-like bacon (Rhone) while the velvety mouthfeel and gentle cassis flavors reminds one of Bordeaux. Fresh tasting with some nice development in the glass over time.

Another great selection from legendary importer Kermit Lynch. Even better that you can find this wine for under $15! This wine has a lot going on. Mellow cedar notes, integrated but not overwhelming cherry fruit, perfume and subtle floral notes. This is what a Malbec should be like!

Popped and poured from a magnum at Landmarc in NYC ($82). For a large group of non-winos, this was perfect: soft red and black fruit, some oak, a hint of sweet berries, medium/short finish. The nose and palate were seamlessly in tune, however if I were blinded on this I'd never guess Cahors, that's for sure. Where's the rusticity? Where's the strength? Where's the structure? This is Cahors made for the South American Malbec lovers, not for someone like me …

Thanksgiving Week Wines; 11/22/2012-11/25/2012 (Edison, NJ) : Dark and spicy, this had a lot of plum, cinnamon, and smoke. The palate was juicy and slightly warm. Lots of plum, raspberry and smokey vanilla notes. Not incredibly exciting.

I like the taste of this wine (a lot). The nose is earthy and follows with a musty berry note. The flavor fills your mouth with the dark berries and then follows with a bite much like a classical youthful Graves. The finish shines with smooth supple tannin and a touch of oak

Interestingly, though I purchased this very shortly after release and it was shipped and stored under good conditions, there was seepage through the cork into the capsule. In fact, the wine was most of the way up the entire cork all the way around as well. Oh well, the wine did not seem to suffer from this in any meaningful way. Format magnum! Laissé en carafe pour un gros 3 heures. Assez fermé au nez au début, odeur de terre et de fruits noir avec un peu d'étable aussi! EN bouche, mures et cerises noires avec un peu d'élevages. Tannins asséchants et finale moyenne. Ordinaire mais correcte pour le prix!
