Even light ruby. Wonderful, complex aromas of red berries, a whiff of smokiness, and perfumed menthol. Elegant medium weight with a super, round feel in the mouth. Bright and very red fruited for Clos Vougeot, fine soil, relatively little remaining tannin, and an assertive twist of orange zest that lifts the finish. New Year's Eve (Healdsburg, California) : Lighter than the 2006, but amazingly, this deepened significantly over time. Much more menthol upfront than the younger wine. Again, remarkable poise and elegance for this cru with beautiful roundness and length. Redder fruit, a citric twist, lovely minerality, soil, and sous bois. Very classy Grand Cru with 5+ years to go. These 2 Anne Gros wines were beauties tonight.

Served in a flight of 93 DRC GE and Richebourg, and remarkably this managed to hold its own. Pristinely stored, this is a dark, dense wine with an enticing nose. The winemaker really hit it out of the park in '93, a classic Clos Vougeot.

I served this blind to 3 people, the guesses were mostly 2010. A great example of how well stored, well made Burgundy, can last many decades. Rich fruit, dark color, this could easily go decades more. But my bottles won't last, because they are too delicious today.

Superb showing for this wine. Dark color, lovely sweet finish. A little funky at first, nose exhibits wonderful spice after 45 minutes in the glass. Drink or hold, this is a delicious and thoughful Burgundy.

This wine was confounding. The color was totally dark, no bricking whatsoever. My first whiff I thought it might be corked, but the consensus was it was just funky - and indeed that seemed to blow off. The palate had dark fruit, but the finish was a bit too dry and woody. Two Great Old Burgundy Dinners with Dear Friends; 12/4/2015-12/5/2015 : Deep ruby. At first, reticent black fruit, dense, tannic, meaty, and closed on first pour. This was both chronologically and spiritually the youngest red of the weekend, and not surprisingly, it came the farthest distance over 4 hours. Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL) : Open 7-8 hours before serving. I guess this was released as both Anne Gros as well as A&F Gros, which I've had before. Lots of slightly maturing black and red cherry with plenty of tannins and overall structure and background spice. Good now, with upside from here.

Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (Yusho - Chicago IL) : Open several hours before serving. Backward to start. Mostly black fruit, relatively rustic with very firm "1993" tannins. Not very forthcoming today. Power and subtle spice comes through on finish.

First bottle showed a distinct mustiness and I couldn't help to think that this bottle was flawed. Second bottle was absolutely stunning showing youthful red fruit with wonderful nuances of forest floor and spices. Quite powerful still, yet graceful and elegant in its expression. The tannins are almost fully resolved yet still present which suggest plenty of life yet. A wonderful, memorable bottle of wine.

Stunner of a wine. Dark, savory nose. Layers of secondary fruit. A mouthful of velvety fruit and structure. Great acid balance. Just entering a drinking window and has a long life ahead. Note after bottle open for 3 hours. Drank next to the '98 which was more high-toned and had more structure.

Took a while to open up, but had a lovely red fruit nose with spicy notes, a medium bodied palate and slightly dry, fine tannins. A bit disappointing that it didn't continue to open and lift after a couple hours.

Healthy color with minimal fading. A brief touch of barnyard, then cool menthol secondary aromatics with finely etched flavors and excellent length. Very elegant in comparison to the 1990 version of this wine that we also tried.

The WOTN for most (maybe all) of the tasters present. Here we find another step up in both concentration and balance, with smoky spice notes, forest floor, and dark chocolate emerging on the slightly reserved but very pure nose dominated by black fruit. This wine held up beautifully with time in the glass, but really needs another five years or so to develop more fully. But the depth and incipient complexity are all there. Great stuff!
