Hong Kong Pearl of Burgundy wine trip; 1/16/2025-1/19/2025 : Served alongside the Laurent, I thought that this was the Laurent blind. Masculine and savoury black fruit with a vibrant ruby appearance that suggested a strong vintage so I thought this was a '99 Gevrey. No slouch but the better CSJ terroir of the Laurent won the day.

This one really needed some air and tasted uninspiring out of the bottle. Some air and time really elevated the nose to a strong mix of black/red fruits with a hint of forest floor. There was surprising strength in the tannins at the end of the sip. Tasted good with a variety of vegetables with olive oil.

This is a massive wine that could hardly be identified blind as a Burgundy. Putting that aside, its' got that blue fruit thing that Dugat-Py is famous for and the wine is loaded with depth and power. I really like the finish which is deeply complex and concentrated with a fabulous note of dark spices. Decanted for 5 hours; this could be a 100-year Burgundy! Burgundy purists will be put off by it.

Truly great wine, now at the height of its powers. Shows how much time you need to give the 99s and I know that not every grand cru burg from that year is ready even now. Deep colour for a Burgundy. The nose is not particularly fragrant, but what emerges is raisiny in a pleasant way. The mouth confirms this and adds dark berry flavours; it is balanced, with very good depth and excellent acidity. A very good Gevrey at the high end of the maturity scale. By all accounts, the 1999 Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin was a real monster in its youth, but time has been kind to it. A bouquet of crisp black fruit, graphite, rich earth, game and woodsmoke introduces a rich, dense and three-dimensional wine with beautiful detail and textural refinement to its fine-grained tannins: a wine of poise and authority.
