Cooper's Hawk, Barrel Reserve

Had two bottles, both gifted to me last year. Opened them both at the same time. They were consistent. Dark purple in color. Pristine cork. Both had an oxidative quality immediately out of the bottle, and this quality remained throughout the tasting. Notes of dark berries, cola, and caramel. To me the wine seems too manipulated and lacks a sense of place. This may be a good wine to others, not to me.

Starting to turn. Dumped!!

Garnet black color. Savory aromas and flavors of dusty shelf and cherry candy, diced bell pepper and beets, smoked and grilled meat, and dill with a chewy, crisp, dryish full body and a tingling, charming, medium-long beets and chocolate ganache finish with coating, grippy tannins and moderate oak. A dry savory wine.

Tasted in company of two Lynfred Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ('08 '09) in a contemplative tasting of some local cheapies I had laying around. Natural cork enclosure! This NV Barrel Reserve (from 2012 I believe?) has lots of vanillin-rich wood perfume. Some generic red-wine aromas are here, and a bit of RS seems intentionally left to round out the palate. very well done by coopers hawk, this is a solid 89-90 red blend that is bold with some spice and fruity, but not so much as their wines usually get. really hope that they maintain the quality of their specialty wines now that they've gained more popularity.

Bottle 16827 of 18000. Surprising mild nose with hints of berry and leather. Let decant 45 minutes and then went back after it the next day. Day one was by itself without any food. Day one was surprisingly bland with little fruit notes and uneven tannins. Day two opened up the spicy tannins over the jammy blackberries but the delay seemed to have beat any fruits to a minimum. 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (Our house) : Deep ruby red color. Opens with a subtle earthy funk, along with pine resin, spice and boysenberry. Medium-bodied, with boysenberry, plum, pepper and spice flavors. Nice finish. As a group we were all over the place on varietal- Cab, Cab blend, Zin, etc., though we were all in agreement that it was a very enjoyable wine. Of course it was quite a shock when this was revealed.
