Auction bottling. Stunning. Rich and full of fruit but also an electric acidity. So much going on here.

BYO Centropa (Centropa, Oslo, Norway) : Lys strågul farge.

Not served blind, nor was it opened ahead, as our host generously offered the run of his cellar, and I picked this. In a good place now, but there are decades of life ahead for this wine. It’s just starting to shed some of the fat that came with the 2007 vintage, a bit of a tingle of acidity making its presence felt on the finish. The flavors are all orchard fruit and a dash of the tropical, that fruit …

Best spatlese I’ve ever had. For my palate, perfectly mature, open, full of stone fruit and flowers, but with just the right balancing acidity. Fresh and very little, if any, botrytis, but with no shortage of ripeness. Spicy like Himmelreich, but less grassy than a mosel spatlese. Superb.

Blinded - and recognized as riesling instantly. Tropical fruit, lychee, honey, with great acidity and a streak of slate/minerality. Filled with tasty fruit on the palate. Tasty.

Just as fun as last bottle. Don't think this needs more aging but can probably surf safely in your cellar for another half decade. Petroleum and orchard fruit and on the palate there is some saffron which I really enjoy. The alcohol is not disturbing but if you drink it like a spätlese from Mosel you will get drunk about twice as fast. Oily but not at all disturbing, it is complex and has depth. Good wine. I just wonder …

Beautiful, regal, both powerful and delicate, so pure. Still quite young. Terrific.

Very aromatic with ripe fruit, a distinct residual sweetness on the tip of the tongue, but finishes almost dry. Opens up even more with time, showing ripe, juicy stone fruit together with a refreshing acidity.

Nose takes some time to wake up. Ripe orchard fruit, slightest of petroleum. But it is the palate that impresses. Lovely structure and balance, and there is a slight bitter streak that frames the wine in a sophisticated fashion. There is saffron, which I find only in better rieslings. Sugar well balanced, but evident, and alcohol much more evident than in the Zilliken spätlese and Selbach Oster kabinett we matched it against. Nonetheless impressive wine.

Delicate nose of honey, tropical fruit, smoke, and a hint of petrol. Nice sweetness with ripe melon, honey, cantaloupe, and some meyer lemon on the palate. Long finish. Paired extraordinarily well with Sichuan food.

An interesting contrast to the Schafer Frohlich from last night. This is much more primary fruit on the nose. You get some honey as well - almost like Riesling jelly. That said, the palate is austere and mineral. Still coiled tight – time might do this wine some good. Good, but pales to the SF. (90+?)

Monday Night Blinds (Home (Noe st)) : (my wine, non-blind) Medium plus concentration straw in the glass with reflections of gold (just a touch of color here). Tight petrol-driven nose with faint lime. Very clean pool-toy with lemon nose. The TDN blends smoothly into shiny lemon oil fruit. There's also a hint of wet stones on the nose - a touch of development. As it opens up, there's a slight hint of honey and lemon curd. The fruit was ripe. …

Probably the wrong time to drink as its in an awkward stage between fresh and mature, but very good and clearly going to get better. I don't think it lacks in acidity like some have commented- I found it to be pretty zippy and tense with a lot of pineapple and green apple fruit. I'd wait 5-15 years if you have it, will mellow out and gain complexity and deliciousness.

Light nose, subtle hints of fruit, clean, no petrol; starts out with excellent acidity, quite rich and lush fruit, a big dose of red apple, but with air, and as the wine warms, that acidity fades, and things get a bit flabby, the palate becomes simple, sweet, pleasant, but quite plain. Just not very exciting, and definitely does not live up to the hype this bottling gets.

Another impressive Riesling from the superb 2007 vintage. A very well balanced combination of fruit, acidity and floral notes that makes for an exceptionally refreshing drink. As an accompaniment to something like a good schnitzel with lemon, or lemon or garlic chicken, it would be hard to imagine a more sublime and perfect combination. It is an excellent example of the charm of Riesling; the clarity of fruit, the transparency of its structure, yet at the same time undeniably complex. …

pale golden-yellow; expressive perfume-like aroma dominated by floral, honey, and slight petroleum and lemon; medium- body; palate is very similar to the bouquet but with a strong savory aftertaste with touch of nutty flavour; not a sweet Spatlese but it also lacks in acidity; nonetheless, it's a good VFM wine for its' aroma alone!

Amazingly delicious. tropical fruity nose, no noticeable botrytis, but engaging with flowers, and vanilla. Rich for a spatlese but still extremely refreshing with acid for miles. It's like a willy wonka invention-the array of flavors- including what I'm swearing is caramel granny smith apples.

I can't stop drinking Riesling; 4/18/2010-4/19/2010 : This is very light in color. The nose jumps out of the glass with a rainbow of colored fruit and dried sandy mineral soil. This wine started a little fizzy. I ended up drinking it over 24 hours at cellar cool, room temperature, and refrigerator cold, and boy did this help me to understand this wine better. In the mouth the wine was full and touched with sweetness, wonderfully tart, and mouth smacking …

Not quite sure what to make of this one. It was a bit reticent. The aromatics were nice -- it smelled like a fresh apple orchard -- but the palate didn't give up much at this stage. It seemed to be right down the middle in terms of style, perhaps tending towards the restrained side of the spectrum.

cask sample They'd just decided that this wine was going to be an Auktionswein. Very peachy on the nose, but with excellent minerality too. Rich and luscious on the palate, and a little more acidity on the finish might help. Surely a de-classified Auslese.
