Koehler-Ruprecht, Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese Trocken R, Pfalz

Hmm. What a fascinating wine. Maybe it was bottle variation, but when smelling this golden wine I got cooked cauliflower, burnt tire, dried apricot, and maybe.a touch of fennel. But mostly cauliflower. On tasting, it was intensely mineral, but a pleasant bitter finish, some funky-cheesy notes, and not a ton of acidity. Somehow the 2007 and even 2004 tasted fresher.

Still much too young, quite closed, but you can taste already the depth and greatness that this wine will bring. Next bottle check in at least 5 years.

Glass: Zalto Bordeaux Tasted 2 x 0,1l from a bottle opened a few days before. Beautiful Auslese R in the making, but not (yet ?) with the electrifying tension and energy I remembered the 2016 vintage when tasted at the winery. Never mind, needs another decade to unfold and for sure there is much to expect. 93-94+

Best bottle (Restaurant Georges, Ludwigsburg) : Glass: Zalto Burgundy Tasted blind. Clear, medium golden color. Very herbaceous nose, reminded me of "Almdudler". On the palate very mineral, herbaceous, round, powerful, sweet fruit, white nougat. Compared to the Kirchenstück and Schlossberg it seemed a bit rustic and not yet there. Did not detect Saumagen, even though I had this wine three weeks ago :) Needs more time. Tonight 92-93+

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Birthday gleaning (@home) : Glass: Zalto Universal Popped and poured. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, youthful-developing nose. Lots of yellow fruit, spicy, cotton candy, lime, grape juicy, fresh herbs, vanilla. A bit barock, but deep, fresh and beautiful. Dry, high, ripe acidity, 12,5% abv. Koehler-Ruprecht The best Dries and some add-ons; 6/23/2019-6/27/2019 (Neuhof am See) : Semiblind. All wines decanted for a few hours. Gabriel Standard glas. Flights of three, All KS dry wines of Spätlese, Auslese, Auslese R und RR. Spicy, discreet peach. still crazy acidity, a touch too short in the late palate to be a really big KS but we will see in the next 5 years where the yourney will go. 93-94

Fresh nose, way more precise than wine 1 in the flight, herbs and chalky mineral notes. On the palate good precision, pressure and grip. Lively acidity. Lots of extract. Elegance and balance. Still so young. Great potential. 93++

Not blind, nmch fresher than the last times, not so spicy, phenolic and "tannic" as usually. Some herbals but the freshness of citrus fruits are dominating. Starting to get his peak. Other guys who drank it blind guessed a warmer (which I can't comprehend but I knew the bottle so it is always easier) and much younger vintage. Nice one. 93-94

Best 2008 German Riesling GG; 9/9/2018-9/11/2018 (Concept Riesling Düsseldorf) : Again in great shape. Really dry, wet stones, not typical Riesling but a great wine. Lime and creamy likewise but very precise finish. 94(95)

The nose was rich and intense yet lifted with dried florals, lime zest, ginger, apricot, and minerals. On the palate, I found soft textures with ripe stone fruits, cascading inner florals, minerals and a spritz of lime. There was so much energy and tension in the wine yet offset by rich oily textures as it finished long, saline and savory.

“Ten Years After” 2008 Dry Riesling with the Guys from Mosel Fine Wines (Domicil Leidinger, Saarbrücken, Germany) : A big surprise in a negative sense. Green notes, herbs, ripe fruit with some overripe pear. Nervous and totally unharmonious. A bit of “tannins”, greens and herbs on the palate. Reminds me a bit of an “Orange wine”. Very weird and not what I expect from a Auslese R. I’m not sure if this was a bottle problem. Therefore no rating. (88)

Very complex and concentrated wine with white and yellow fruit, paired with herbs. Acidity is nicely integrated. The wine has power, is focused, with depth and changing aromas. In the aftertaste the wine is vibrating, driven by minerals and some salt. It lasts very very long!! Wow, what a wine...

All dry Koehler-Ruprechts (Dado Restaurant Düsseldorf) : Drinking all Auslese trocken R and RR, some Sptätlese trocken und Kabinett trocken from Koehler-Ruprecht. It was an amazing evening. Very special wines. For many the best dry German Rieslings. I rated this time generally lower than most of the other 12 participants. For some wines just ratings or short DN. very fresh and reluctant, great acidity structure, subtle fruit notes

Intense nose, opening with chrushed oyster shell, chartreuse and limestone. Some yellow fruits and a floral component begin to peek through with air. This is still very tight. Very concentrated on the palate, with plenty of extract and med + acidity. Very mineral. Needs plenty of air. would recommend a long decant, and some more bottle age.

Wines of the Saumagen (Weingut Koehler-Ruprecht) : Nose: A bit of apricote, organe zest and brown cinnamon but the fruit is not expressive. You also get a "herb component". Palate: Very juicy, good tension on the mid-palate, medium acidity, nice mineral drive on the back-end. Drinking very well at the moment but no need to hurry.
