AK's birthday : Slightly overshadowed by the Leroy but this was superb for me as well. Remarkably youthful in terms of the nose and the bright ruby colour. The vanilla on the nose needs more time to integrate but again this wine had an incredibly silky texture. A great bottle of this, probably the beat so far, but I need to leave these alone for five more years. The nose is initially quiet and takes 60+ minutes in decanter to start to show higher lighter notes to the red and black berry fruit. Starts to get nice and spicy with that certain zesty tomato and cola spice. Palate is full of stuffing and power and has a lot of chewy fruit and unresolved tannin. Surprisingly big, but …

Beautiful bouquet that has soft cherry fruit intermixed with complex spices and pleasant soily notes. Very elegant. Definitely getting close to that ethereal state that old Rouget can achieve. In a perfect window for drinking at the moment. Soft and resolved palate. Have learned and tasted a lot since the last time I had this. Still excellent. Martine bottle. Crushed a ‘96 alongside, which was comparatively dark and tightly wound, unsurprisingly.

This had a more robust nose that was more dark-fruitedand intensely spice forward. The ‘93 alongside made this seem much more concentrated and tight than it really was. Well endowed with a lot of stuffing, but also giving up some nice aromatic expression. Cool blue fruit too. Big palate but not over-oaked or unduly heavy in any areas. Shows a touch of age yet still incredibly vivid and vibrant. Ultra velvety!! Cherry, floral with a touch of vanilla. The characters of 93’ add right amounts of tannin at this stage. Superbly delicious ! Probably at its plateau and should hold for at least 5-10 years! (96pt-97pt) with Family by Y.

PNP into Riedel pinot noir glass (“Leaf” day): Pale ruby colour to the eyes. Super fine but pronounced vegetal and florals. More secondary than primary fruit aromas. Highly mineral and just superb balance. 94 points to me. 3 hours upon opening: Very elegant and amazing nose. Wow!

Drunk at Amuse Bouche Hong Kong - Drinking beautifully right now. Loads of capsicum on the nose and maybe a little more advanced than I would have expected but held well throughout the evening.

2010 vintage

Also very clean red fruit in profile. The tannins and acid were so prominent that I figured this to be the 96 Rouget Echezeaux. Showing quite young tonight and only at the end of 3 hours did this start to show it's full potential and similarly to the first wine.

Very floral and red fruited, modest hints of spice and occasionally minerals. I found it more Chambolle in style than Vosne, with roses, strawberries and subtle power under the surface. Very lithe across the palate, I’d like to see it develop and express more power over time. Certainly not the intensity you find in his CP and Ech. 91-92

2010 vintage

97 rouget is famous because rumour is jayer made the wine. The nose is a bit musky with some prunes but it does not have the vr spice and floralness. With more time in the glass, the palate is more expressive with depth. There is red fruit, dark fruit, spice and herbs with good layers. Very elegant and refined

Jayer dinner. Flight with 91 Meo Murgers, 96 Rouget Echezeaux and 96 Meo Richebourg. Developed bracing acidity that was unpleasant. Fairly muted, albeit sweet nose. Tart and short.

1996 vintage

Burg Dinner with Friends (RPM Steak - Chicago IL) : Open and decanted approx 30 minutes before serving in Beaux Monts flight. Ripe black fruit with good density combined with subtle spice and mushroom notes. Firm on palate, this kept evolving on both nose and glass, in both better and less interesting ways over the course of the evening. In its drinking window, but probably not a 1996 to hold for another decade+.

Something truly special. Similar notes to the 1990 enjoyed alongside, but a touch more purity and finnese. Beautiful red cherry, menthol, and eucalyptus perfume with damp earth behind it. Impossibly silky red cherry on the palate with drying cranberry and some dusty leather. Two very experienced guests at the table remarked that this wine "had Jayer all over it." A unique and amazing piece of work, would pay a lot for another one.

Dinner at RPM (RPM Italian - Chicago, IL) : Delish! Young and a bit raw (as you'd expect a '99 Beaux Monts to be), but dang...the material here is gorgeous. Structure was the calling card here so don't open one of these expecting elegance, poise and charm. Lots of promise.

Dinner at RPM Italian (Chicago, IL) : Very young and light on its feet, with lots of ripe (but tart) red fruit on the nose. Lovely red cherry flavours but this feels like it's still in the process of shedding its youth... it'll need plenty of time to come around.

Decanting Regime: Decanted for an hour an consumed over the following four hours. Nose: Initial notes of leather, eucalyptus and acid. After two hours, red and dark berries appear. Taste: After two hours, beautiful structure appeared projecting the wine in a lovely jeweled gown, fit for a king. Martine's Wines with Martine Saunier (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL) : Ripe fruit that is starting to show some excellent forest floor aromas. Earthy flavors are a bit more prominent that the fruit. Tannins and acidity are both quite prominent giving the wine some slightly sharp elbows, but nonetheless a very good bottle just approaching its peak.

Dinner with Patrick and Gregg (Cafe Spiaggia - Chicago IL) : Nose shows red berries, good floral tones, along with spice from both fruit and oak. Same fruit on palate, oak and tannins integrated well on plate. Long spicy finish, very classic Vosne.
