Weekend in Michigan with Wine; 8/5/2023-8/6/2023 (Asian Spice House - Buchanan MI) : Opened in the afternoon, revisited at dinner. Rich and spicy to start, but seemingly a touch too oaky and "modern." More classic style and depth emerged several hours later, with the new oak spice recast as classically Vosne with more depth and bright red fruit. Very good.

Ramonet 1er Cru / Anne Gros Grand Cru Dinner (Formento's - Chicago IL) : In vertical, this was the star. Ripe and powerful, this showcases amazing richness and spice. So much pleasure here, well supported by its structure , just out of the spotlight in the near background. This should drink well for another decade+.

Lunch at La Trompette (Medlar, London) : Similar colour to the Lamarche. Very slick and glossy on the nose. Oozes class. Full, still a bit of tannic grip. Quite rich. A touch of oak. Long with a lovely line. Structure buttresses the richness. An elegance and sophistication here, cf the Lamarche’s relative sturdiness. Very smart indeed and a likely knockout in five to ten years. *****

No formal, mote on this one - but recall a very fine grained, dark fruited, harmonious Clos Vougoet, with lovely line and a long, lightly grippy finish. Superb, just starting to drink, should age well.

Nice and very floral nose with bright fruit. The palate is the archetypal Pinot well born and perfectly ripe: satiny, with a nice tangy texture. The fruit is still vibrant with emerging complexity. Clos Vougeot (Grands-Echezeaux / Southwest-side) Tasting (Hughes House - Chicago IL) : Single blind in 8/02/04/088 vertical, all fairly easily identified correctly. Bigger and more dense vs 1998 but less harmonious to me. Black cherry and berry with soy, Asian five spice and earth. Possibly some upside, but others thought it fading toward the end of the evening.

Clos Vougeot - Ech/Grand-Ech Side Tasting (Chicago) : 08/02/98/04 single blind. Alluring aromas of spice-filled black cherry. Mature, round fruit with earth, herbs, and spice. Nice complexity and showing mature / ready. Sweet fruit and just a touch flat which led me to 2002.

Fully mature Vosne spiced nose with mature red fruit, Clearly fully mature and getting tired. Even more tired flavors with medium weight and faint bitter notes on its finish.

This Clos Vougeot 2002, Domaine Anne Gros, doesn’t sing. Not on the first night and not on the second evening. Just a somewhat uninteresting bottle taking into account the vintage and plot. Dark fruit, a little spice and hints of complexity only. The flowers behind smell more excitingly. Many reviews in cellar tracker are quite positive, so perhaps just an off bottle or the moon is not correct.

Great bottle and tons of fun to watch this wine change over 4 hours. Needed an hour decanting, then the first two sips were still a touch reserved. But then that glass opened up like crazy. Anne Gros' Le Grand Maupertui is one of the finest Clos Vougeot and that is doubly true in 2002 where she produced a wine of power yet elegance. Black cherry, roast meat, and sous bois. Dark fruit and earth flavors are amped up to eleven but carried in a body with little sense of weight. At peak.

Brought to cafe campagne An initial whiff of clove emerged. Medium in body and needing about 45 minutes to warm up to the task. We leisurely drank this over two hours and the wine remained even and full in body. I was quite impressed with the character and strength in the glass. Best to drink by 2025.

Tertiary characteristics abound. Abundant amount of funk, spice, forest floor, mushroom. Mixing well with the soft cherry fruit. Finish was a bit light but otherwise very fun to explore.

Dinner at MingHin (Chicago, IL) : I thought there was something akin to TCA here, but in hindsight I was probably wrong and it was just a little musty funk. This definitely has a mild stewy quality (probably as a result of the vintage), but it's not as overwhelming as some other 1997s. Fairly earthy, with a fading mix of red and black fruit. Weekly tasting group RWP #310; Surprise 4 x 3 wines (@ BS) : Beautiful and complex bouquet with impressions of iron, forest floor, mushrooms, red berries, and spices like black pepper. On the palate red berries, autumn forest, beautiful acidity and still firm, round tannin. Good length.

Kind of dissapointing. Nothing wrong, good pinot noir, but mono-dimensional and missing complexity. This is either on the way down or temporarily in a dip. No way to find out, this was my last bottle.

Purchased on release dark ruby burg. Sweet boysenberry nose with balanced sweet, blueberry palate that speaks more to a great fruit bomb palate staining 97 with guts to go. Great 97!

Bourgogne 2007 tasting #4: resilient and elegant wine. Feminine nose with raspberry, cranberry, stones, minerals and a smoky touch, nature wine feeling. Warm and rich mouthfeel, slightly jammy fruit, velvety tannins and medium acidity. Silky texture and nice structure, spicy finish. 95p. 2 BV, 0 WV.

This is very strong CV; hats off to Anne Gros for crafting such a dynamic wine. Perhaps not quite at its apogee, this still shows an open, ravishing black cherry focused nose with admirable depth while retaining such elegance and lift. Sappy fruit, loamy earthen notes, perfectly handled oak application, bits of violet and wildflowers. Great, great - look forward to seeing this develop. 94-95

Dinner at the Bannockburn Hotel, Cromwell : A lovely, complex bouquet. Spices, meadow flowers, black cherries and blackberries with chalky mineral notes in the background. Ruby. Sexy nose of red & black fruit, florals, and Chinese five spice. Lithe and racy on the palate with flavors of cherry and spice. The 2002 Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui lacks the sous bois and earthy complexity I have loved in other vintages but makes up for it with an interesting Vosne-esque spice mix.
