Gave this 3 hours open in bottle then drank over 90 minutes or so. Jason Wu’s note describes it well. Early on there was a bit of smoke there too.

Medium garnet in colour. Medium intensity on the nose. Nutmeg, cloves, red roses, red plum, red cherry, mushroom, cedar, wet leaves, subtle pencil shave. It’s developing. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium plus acidity, medium plus tannins with powdery texture, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus flavour intensity, red cherry, earthy, underbrush, tobacco. The finish is medium plus. Very much Bordeaux style, more savoury and earthy than fruity new world style cab blend. Remind me of St …

52% CS, 34% Me, 14% CF ripe dark fruits dominating, some dry herbs, mild cigar box, mellowed perfectly, impressive density and concentration, full body with elegance, fine grained tannins, a little grip. aged well, still having a lot energy and vitality. running smooth and long. 2007 is not an exceptional vintage, but this one showing beautiful energy, elegance, and maturity. One of my daughters' birth year wines, laid in cellar since they were little. eighteen years, wow, time flies, but …

More bright blackberry fruit & clearly younger than the 2000 drunk just before. But never fully integrated like the 2000 to the same silky, lingering smooth after taste. Still an excellent wine with the same characteristics but not quite the same complexity & class as the 2000.

Superb cool-climate Cabernet. Drunk after magnificent Cabernets from Ridge and Leoville LC the previous weekend, this felt in their league, but more herbaceous. Tightly wound, with bright and focused black currant, tightly knit French oak elevage, stern tannins, and quite bright acid, at age 15, this wine is evolving very slowly. My feeling is that it will always be a bright wine, but it does not appear that the fruit is going to fall away any time too soon. Very …

Unattractive nose, no fruit. Like a dusty floor, with the odd mouse dropping. Fortunately this doesn’t carry through to the palate. Very savoury, dense core of black fruit, not very Cabernet, not very kiwi. Think St Estephe certainly not Margaux or Pauillac. Actually more think Fronsac. So much bottle variation!

I knew it was a risk, buying an over aged wine but I’ll force it down.

My last bottle and the weakest one. Sort of a very tired New World Bordeaux blend.

Gave it some air but a little cooked sadly. Tasted ok if a little lacking in fruit but the whiff of old stewed fruit never blew off which affected the wine each time I went for a sip. Perhaps just an off bottle.

Dense and dark fruited medium bodied wine. Quite muscular and still a little simple, feels like it’s got more to show. Just in to the excellent range. I wanted more time with this wine. Great to have one under a good cork, I’ve had a poor run with Te Mata corks.

Phil's Coravin exploration (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney) : From Coravin. Wetly juicy blackcurrant, red plums, biscuit and sweet spice, I get a tiny touch of wood glue here as well and some leafiness. Juicy acidity is medium plus intensity, Medium plus intensity tannins are grippy, grainy and carry log, fruit is present as well as that slight wood glue note but the alcohol is a bit too intrusive on this vintage. Hmm

THis bottle was quite different from the previous one tasted some weeks ago. It had the structure and definition with black fruits, but was slightly sour. Hopefully just a bad bottle, but on checking with Jancis Robinson she also describes it as "sour". - .

Brilliant showing. Rich and intense varietal expression, herbaceous, early maturity. Very classy. Has been opaque in the past, but is starting to show transparency.

Youthful showing of this great NZ wine with plenty of years left in it. Well structured and good fruit coming through. Will be interesting to see how the tertiary characteristics develop over the next 5 years. Great value here.

Much better this time. Green leafy character seem stop have resolved. Still a bit tannic and best to give another 2-3 years.

Hardly any sign of age, dark reddy/purple. Sweaty nose of blackcurrant, plum, strawberry, cherry, port, espresso, Christmas cake, prune, currant - a fresh earthiness, rhubarb and heat. Palate similar introducing coffee bean, pomegranate, persimmon, a subtle dark cocoa. Evolved over the evening - we all found it was hard to define exactly what was happening (despite what I've written) and concluded this was an elegant package of what is expected of a decent wine. Acidity was present, tannins early in …

Decanted for 2-3 hours, cork had some travel, Incredible deep intense colour with no brick hints, slight pepper and heat on the nose, overt ripe (but not over ripe) blackcurrant, plum, black cherry, touch of port ish characters, vanilla, dark cocoa, cloves, strawberry, acidity is present but soft, extremely elegant tannin, very refined but still would last up to another 5 years, changes readily between glasses,

Taste of New Zealand - 2017 : Blood, raspberry, rhubarb and violet, along with some spice from the oak. The palate shows plenty of youthful sweet fruits, and there is a pretty serious structure behind it with tannin and oak both stepping in. The fruit stands up well and there is good length. Would be interesting to see this again in 7-8 years.

Deep red, dark fruit, cassis, tobacco on the nose. Elegant palate, with fruit, touch of herbs, tobacco, liquorice Oak fairly restrained. Cabernet sav exhibits varietal charm and elegance but does have the sense of not being fully physiologically ripe, which is a shame, considering how good the '07 vintage was. Tannins well integrated, medium finish. This wine is in its window, but still young; Whilst another bottle would be worthwhile keeping for 3-5+ years further, it was enjoyable tonight with …

Still drinking like a young wine. Has a nose very reminiscent of Bordeaux but the palate more closely aligns with new world Cabernet. Nice depth of cassis fruit, spicy oak and some graphite style flavours. Does need more time though I think.

Excellent example of a Hawkes Bay Cabernet blend done well. It is ripe and powerful, but it also retains bright acids and an almost peppermint aspect that keeps the wine from ever feeling ponderous. Excellent cedar notes and a touch of earth. The terroir of Hawkes Bay shines through this wine - it has Bordeaux proportion, but the brightness of the fruit (especially the plummy merlot aspect) bring this squarely to NZ. The oak handling is less toasted and overt …

Te Mata Coleraine vertical (Institute of Directors, London) : Quite different from the preceding, older, vintages - a broad burgundian fragrance, penetrating fruity nose, quite volatile, but the palate was more conventional, still showing some vanilla oak - I really liked this, though it did seem to have become coarser when I went back to it at the end of the tasting
