Pieropan, Soave, Classico La Rocca

Rich and mineral at the same time, this is in a great place right now, but from previous vintages I'm confident this will go to its 10th birthday. Loads of rich greengage fruit with some honey and a hint of spice.

2020 vintage

This pours medium gold in the glass. The nose is lifted, mature and complex showing apple sauce, pear, burlap, decaying white flowers, kiwi, honey, hay, fresh laundry, chalk, and cold cream. The palate enters on the honey tinged pear and kiwi with bright medium plus, focused acid. The finish is long chalky and complex with a bitter and mineral drive. All in all this a fabulous showing, especially when served a little above room temperature.

2017 vintage

Deep gold.. Apricot, lavender nose. Peach, apricot, herbaceous palate. Medium body & finish. Excellent wine. Should drink well for 4-5 years.

2020 vintage

Aged fine body white wine is spectacular! Intense primary now with secondary and tertiary components that add body and complexity. Well developed tertiary flavours, yet I imagine this is still ascending. Privilege. A Medium+ bodied wine with lemon, green apple & blossom primary, cedar & dough secondary and cheese, dried herbs & honey tertiary flavours, High acid, Medium- tannin and Medium (13%) alcohol. We rated this wine Very Good.

Wonderful Soave. The Botrytis fruit adds a whole new dimension. Drinking well now, but could go for several more years.

Green gold colour Full texture, rich and ripe, almond and apricot, a bit much at first but it's fresh enough and quite moreish. Perhaps not the best thing with quite delicate seafood.

Extraordinary expression of Garganega through the hands of Pieropan, a great vineyard selection, showing how much potential Soave holds.

2017 vintage

Interesting blend of late harvested Garganega, aged on leas for 15 months. Much more complex and richer than the more commercial Soave's that I have had. Paired this with a rich sweet corn bisque. The combination was excellent - acidity was right balance for the sweetness of the soup

2020 vintage

Boston Wine + Poker, Needham, Mass.: Tasted blind. Rich golden color. Aroma of honey, with some oak, some heat. Rich flavor with a lot of spice. This is a bit heavy-handed, but nevertheless quite sumptuous and pleasurable.

Drunk with a picnic from a plastic goblet, but still managed to shine. Sunny, fruit-filled yet incisive, with just a hint of oak poking through. A bit less opulent than when I last tried it in 2023. Still really fresh and with time in hand for my final bottle.

Straw/pale gold colour with a muted pear nose. The palate has ripe pear, almond and a honeyed note. The wine wasn't as expressive as it usually is but it was served too cold.

Still Young. Light yellow color. Bouquet of bright stone fruit, almond, vanilla. Medium, salty but harmonic finish. Can go for many more years.

First single vineyard bottling. The second vintage the sons were in control. And just so darn good.

Medium gold with medium+ aromas of honeysuckle, pear, apple, lemon, lime, apple, white pepper, wet stones, spice, almonds. Dry, medium+ acidity. Great intensity on the palate. Medium+ finish. Very good.

Pale gold. Pronounced aromas of almond, lemon, lime, grapefruit, melon, ginger, honeysuckle, cream, brioche, smoke. Medium+ acidity. Waxy and long finish. Outstanding wine and tertiary aromas and flavours may well develop further with age.

2017 vintage

Medium gold. Pronounced on the nose with aroma of butter, cream, apricot, pineapple, honey, almond, vanilla, straw. Developing. The wine is dry, medium plus acidity, medium alcohol. It has great intensity, long finish. Outstanding wine with great value! Drink now with potential to age.

Gyllengul. Intens duft av gul frukt, tørket aprikos og et touch av vanilje og eik. Rik, ganske svær munnføkelse, jeg tenker ‘glycerin’ uten at jeg helt hvordan det føles … men det smaker utrolig godt, det er en heftig vin med mye smak av gul frukt. Stor fylde med mer moderat syre, lang smakskurve med gul frukt og kamfertoner i avslutningen. Vi drakk Calvarino for to uker siden (samme sted) og den var kanskje ikke fullt så ‘ekspressiv’?

Oak, butter, vanilla, apple, nuts. Colorful and glamorous soave. Long-lasting nose and palate with great quality. Definitely well-made wine and many peolple loves this for some reason but not me. It’s too much for food pairing and not enough for standing alone in my opinion. I’d rather choose calvarino for pairing, not because this is bad, but this is in-betweener.

Waxy green almond white nectarine on the nose. Palate still needs to knit. Good freshness and midweight sap. Nice texture. Still has years to go. Hold.

Buttered shortbread nose. Apricot, almond, vanilla in the mouth (a touch of pineapple?). The finish is exquisite with acidity and impression of sweetness (dried apricot)

2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa) : Although the style isn't to everyone's taste, I always enjoy Rocca and this was no exception. Open, bright, spicy nose, with some lemon coming through. Opulent on the palate, which showed pineapple fruit and some oak that will integrate with time, and then an attractive, energetic finish.

Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1) : Straw yellow. Nose shows yellow fruits, it's dry, quite linear, and very quaffable - although don't look here for energy and excitement.

Last of ten bottles I got in 2020 at a great price. This was the best experience of a string of good experiences. It seemed to have taken on more weight and richness, without losing any of the floral character or acid balance. A delight.

This is great. Similar to the Classico but with more body depth complexity. Lovely with crab linguine. Piero pan delivers QPR again. No idea where this was on the maturity curve.

Golden straw coloured. Unctuous expressive nose of tropical fruits, lime, slate and fresh Spring florals. Fleshy, refreshing and lingering palate. Trademark La Rocca.

A beautiful wine, very well balanced, put together meticulously. Nice lively acidity and vibrancy. Have 5 more which I plan to drink every 2 years, can't wait to see its development.

It is still on the (very) early side of its drinking window with the lasts sips being the best (so not rated because the wine was still showing a positive evolution). The fruit was very ripe, giving a reflection of the hot vintage with medium intense acids.

Day 1, the fruit was holding back some. Better on day 2. Good mineral presence on the nose, followed by stone fruits. On the palate, mineral, citrus, green apple. Medium acidity with long finish.

Age did this well. These are worth holding onto as they develop into something closer to what the Calvarino is capable of.

As for previous note this is impressively rich, although so much so I wonder if it will hold on much longer. As in, it has loads of peaches and custard character and I think the joy of it is in the freshness it currently shows.

Tasted at a restaurant in Alba Italy. Smooth orange & banana fragrance but not really sharp citrusy aroma. Dry, highly acidic, light wine.

This is the second time I've had this wine, both purchased off the list at Belotti in Oakland. Quick notes: dark yellow fruit; lemon with some lemon curd notes; sweetness is right on the edge of not wanting to like it, but enough dryness to keep me drinking and enjoying it. Ends with a nice smooth finish. Good.

This pours deep straw, almost gold. The nose displays a lovely melange of fruit: kiwi, cantaloupe, ripe pear, and peach, complemented by touches of honey, wax, and basil. The palate enters on the complex fruit and the waxy character with medium acid and a medium finish with turns a touch sour. Quite a lovely wine that calls to mind elements of Chenin Blanc and Pinot Gris, yet is distinctly its own thing.

Drank at Lucando Verde last nite. Lovely, if expensive Soave. Color is a pale gold/straw color. Nose of honey and white fruit. Medium to full-bodied, slightly viscous, slightly sweet. It's fruity and fleshy, with some almond and pear notes. Very chard-like. Good complexity and nice length. Much bigger and bolder than I expected for this grape, but very enjoyable, if overpriced at this NYC eatery

pale lemon colour; shony, clear, very good. nose: there some citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit) mixed with stonefruits (apricot); some minerality (chalk, limestone); when opens some banana notes appear and a touch of vegetal aromas (celeriac). taste: medium acidity; lemon, grapefruit, pomelo, peach; fruit is ripe and quite round; some soft floral aromas. medium (+) finish with white tea notes. In excellent shape!

Garganega 85 % Trebbiano di Soave 15%. 2017 was a hot vintage. 100% destemmed. Pale yellow color.Beautiful crisp and clean wine with lemongrass and Fuji apple. Very youthful. Previously had the 2000, 2001, 2008 and 2015 vintages and this was among the best. Just a pleasure to drink. 91-92 points.

Served at 55 degrees. Citrus and stone fruits. Mild and elegant with a very slight sweetness. Almost effervescent acidity. Insanely good pairing with spicy egg roll in a bowl that we had for dinner. This maybe the perfect summer screw top! Really really like this wine.
