Savoury with notes of cooked mushrooms, this was still fresh and minerally with flavours of dark berried fruits. There was a touch of astringency on a bitter chocolate and mocha finish, but still holding its own. CHP 90 pts

We had a horizontal tasting of 6 Douro reds in Algarve. First 3 tables with 2 wines and then the winners from each table went to the finals. Vertente finished 3rd against Quinta do Crasto Old Wines, the winner, and second place Quinta da Leda. Vertente is very good, strong finish and fruity. Will benefit from cellaring and is a good buy at 13.90€ in Portugal.

A painful PnP with very drying tannins at first, but it softened and opened up just enough after a half hour or so. Could be considered in its drinking window if you give it enough air. Nicely structured medium-plus body. No mistaking where this is from, but the pedigree of the vintage doesn't shine like it does elsewhere.

During the first couple of hours this was bordering on Parker juice: heaps of ripe red and black fruit, vanilla, and swanky oak. Later on, with extensive air contact, it started to shed its puppy fat and got altogether more attractive, lean, focused. Needs time.
