This was a strange one. It came out of the bottle with a youthful, vibrant ruby appearance, but on the first day, the nose was marred by an overwhelming whiff of chemical, somewhat like UHU glue. It was undrinkable. I didn’t hold out much hope when trying it again on day two, but the UHU smell had largely dissipated, though not entirely, and the generous and luxurious ripe plum and black cherry fruit really came into focus. Stunning wine. Just gorgeous tonight wafting a captivating perfume layered with roses, spiced red cherries, mocha and licorice. Decedent palate with incredible richness, depth, a cooling minerality and a 90 second finish. And of course, the best white truffle wine!

For the ridiculously complicated bottle prep info: Double decanted for sediment around 6 hours earlier. It felt like it needed air then so I decanted it for 4 hours, smelled and tasted and then back in the bottle for a couple hours and drunk a couple hours later while watching game 7 of the World Series. A vertical of Rinaldi wines from 2003 to 2019, with the wines showing great purity and why the wines of Giuseppi Rinaldi are amongst the greatest in Barolo. The 2007 was the WOTN and is drinking beautifully with the tannins well integrated and notes of leather, truffles and sweet berries. Such a lovely wine.

(Blind verkostet) Gereiftes Granatrot. Die Nase ist offen, weit entwickelt, der Wein ist voll da, reife, gekochte Frucht, Weihnachtsgewürze, etwas Maggikraut, Unterholz. Im Gaumen ebenfalls gereift, sehr weit entwickelt, das Tannin ist dezent trocknend, die Säure wirkt stimmig, langer Abgang, rotfruchtiges, würziges Finish. Jetzt trinken.

Tons of sediment. Nose was classic roses mixed with an old bookstore and stewed fruit. Taste was a bit more classic rinaldi but still with a cooked fruit/pruniness that I couldn’t get past. I’d guess this bottle got hot at some point. Too sad 😞

The ‘07 Brunate showed similarly to what I recall from my last tasting in 2020. It is one of the more promising and vibrant wines of the uneven 2007 vintage. It is drinking well now but should age well for at least another decade I think.
