Amazing wine, light in color, almost pink... aromas of balsam fir, spice box, dried orange peel, red cherry... fresh and easy on the palate, savory and spicy, the orange and cherry notes flit about... ethereal and mercurial, love it...

Absolutely beautiful. Needed more than the 90 minutes we gave it but still, a lovely Barolo. Color started off very light. Gained color and a little more viscosity as it aired out. Lasted easily the full 5 hr dinner. No reason to wait to drink.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume IX (Chicago, IL) : A very mature example, with lots of the colour dropped out. The nose is meaty and smoky, with a bit of a floral overtone, and you do get a little bit of tar underpinning it as well. Bottle purchased at auction so you never know, but this was really quite good; still had a pretty good cork seal for 65 years old; the nose was lovely and complex; forest floor, mint, anise, dried red cherry and currant, orange peel, cigar box, truffle; it was changing every sniff. '55/'61/'67 plus '61 Fontanafreda poured single blind. The stylistic consistency of the Mascarellos was amazing, from the pale, nearly translucent color down the the way the sediment was formed in large sheets. All of the wines showed propersly and for the most part were delicious. The '67 was the least impressive and clearly on the backside of maturity. Not madeirized, but it had a crystalline candied sweetness, almost like a tawny port. Interesting, but not up to the standard of …

Tasted blind, this wine had a red center and tan rims. The medium intensity nose of cherries, caramel, vanilla, and soil was impressive. In the mouth, while there was some richness, I found this wine a bit anemic. The bottle I tasted suggests this wine should be consumed.

Amazing old Barolo!

Consistent with my prior bottle of '55 as well as those I have had from 58/61/64. In a great flight of '55s including Capellano and Fontanafreda. Decent fill and an obviously original cork that disintegrated upon opening. Double decanted in the morning to drink at dinner. As is typical, this initially pours with almost no color...like a light rose; then after a few hours, picks up both some color and flavor. From a 1L bottle with a terrible looking cork and a hand written vintage on the label. The cork basically turned to sawdust upon opening, but was otherwise well sealed in the neck of the bottle. Any worries were dispelled once I started decanting. While I don’t know 55 as well as 58 or 61, this immediately looked exactly like it should, ie the color of pure, crystalline Rose. A truly lovely bottle in pristine condition, which paired exceptionally well with tortellini and perigord truffle, parmesan, and pecorino. Double decanted in the morning, and opened in the evening at restaurant. Initially very light rose color with strawberry on the palate, the color deepened significantly after some exposure to air, and the flavor expanded to more typical old Barolo. Still vibrant and developing nicely in the glass.

Must have been an off bottle, nearly white color, still drinkable but no joy here - same with a bottle of Barbaresco from the same source

This is just a very special wine. The lightest-looking red wine I have tasted - like watered-out strawberry squash. Unexpected aromas of fertilizer upon opening, transforming into aromas like of old burgundy - animal and mature raspberries. On the palate smooth, warm, tight and structured, but refined. Barolo 1958, 1967, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1987 (Chez Dal Piaz) : Apon openin this offered a very spicy and hightoned profile with great, crystalline purity of fruit, spicy and herbal with a touch of jalapeno jelly this struck me as more of a fruit driven nose compared to the Bartolo's nose of old wine and winemaking. in the mouth this was fully resolved and gently earthy with high remaining acidity.
