Another evening, another pretty challenging experience with a wine from the 2005 vintage. The issue now is not so much about being shut, but whether there is enough of interest here. Perhaps this is a 1978 situation which is just going to need forever and a day, but found this to be very atypical of Vosne-Romanée today. Of the 6 NSGs, in terms of how it was drinking in the moment, this was WOTN. Slow-ox for two hours, this was immediately complex on both nose and mouth. Dark fruits, ripe, tannins fully mature, great length. Probably at peak now.

Fully mature and drinking wl. Very good but perhaps more intellectually interesting than pleasurable at this point. Evolved fairly rapidly over 2 hours. Tart red fruit — red plums? Tannins are ripe and integrated but still present as a flavour and texture element. Medium length and complexity. Good depth. Mushroom tea on the nose. Medium weight. Quite masculine. This had the best attributes of both the '10 and '09. It's streamlined like the '10 but had much of the '09's richer, deeper fruit, so it actually tastes younger than the '10. It doesn't have those baking-spice scents though as the ripe elements are more dominant - a twist of licorice stands out on the aroma more than anything.

Still young with a slight tannic bite but a streak of wild fruit makes it all work. Super elegant and detailed. Just hitting it's secondary peak. Text book Burgundy and excellent NSG.

This opened well with a deep crimson colour and forthcoming nose of dark cherries, garnet plums, wild strawberries leading into game and allspice notes as it breathed. The palate showed quite intense fruit characters and a quite structured line of fine tannins and savoury elements providing lovely length and and mouthfeel. This is a delicious bottle with plenty of room for evolution.

took three nights of air before this was even OK or OK +... wait at least 5 years and I would recommend 7 yrs to 15 yrs for optimal drinking... 2005 may produce magic but generally not for another decade or two

PnP After two hours of air, this really hits its stride with aromas of roses, dark blackberry, smoke, fall spice and soft wood. Youthful, awakening palate with crushed red fruit, juiciness, youthful attractive tannins, great velvety texture and a mouth coating long long finish. No rush but really getting to the zone and a fun wine for PN lovers in the new and old world. Vosne-like

Very pretty wine, not what one would immediately place in NSG. Open red fruit nose, sauve juicy palate, long ripe finish. My favorite kind of red Burgundy. Plenty of life left but no reason to wait.

It took a while to open up fully. Initially, there was a bit of oak that was on the nose and palate. The palate was very structured and tannic, I guess more because of the vintage rather than the producer. After about 2 hours in the bottle, it opened up to typical Burgundian brilliance. This was drinking well from the get go, clearly a more forward 2005, showing concentrated and flavorful dark red to black fruit. There’s a fairly sweet impression from the fruit, balanced with good medium acidity, and the tannins have mellowed, though not completely bereft of power. PnP but then decant after two hours which softened the wine a lot (maybe too accelerated) Nose is youthful and alive with dollops of elegant dark raspberry and blackberry kissed with violet, licorice, woodsy smoke, and stoney minerals. Popped and poured to accompany coq au vin. Darker ruby color. Nose of utter freshness, cut berry, damp cellar, almost searing violets. The wine has opened up considerably since 2016 and is in a good drinking window with plenty of aging potential. I was slightly less impressed this time as I found the finish clunky and disjointed. But the nose and the opening flavours are delicious. May improve further.

Odd, looking at the notes here must be a problem bottle. First had Grivot's NSG1e Roncieres 05, bright deepish red, nice ripe rich fruit, but finish had a nasty green streak that reminded me too much of 2004 pyrazines. Disappointing. Drunk alongside 05 Jadot Boudots and the Grivot outperformed in every respect. Lot of inital flavors of earth, sous bois, spice. Compared to some other 05s, I thought this felt like it was drinking a little older but maybe cause it lacks the punch that some 05s just north of the NSG border show. Overall a lovely effort

Wow, has this developed! I decanted (something I rarely do) as it started out fairly closed, but over 1 hour really exploded, building into something rich, long, fully open, great complexity, but balanced. A wine that can easily age another 10 years, but with decanting entering great drinking window.

Entering f the drinking window now with lots of room for further development. Rich without being heavy. Red fruit, great length, rich in the midpalate. Still a hint of something not fully resolved. this improved considerably in the first 30-60 minutes when it was showing some reduction / backwardsness. First of a case. Decanted for 2-3 hours. Upon opening, this had a beautiful and generous nose with loads of Vosne spice ... so I was optimistic it would show well. Was shut down by the time we got to taste the wine. Still showed correctly -- but wound up tight and not giving. Needs 5+ years, I guess.

BYO Blind Tasting and Dinner (House of Nanda - Chicago IL) : Tasted double blind. A very difficult wine, this was completely shut down despite 3 hours in decanter. We were told it was more forthcoming aromatically when initially opened. This barely seemed like Pinot Noir, but absolutely had very good concentration. I enjoyed this wine a few years after release, but it is now in a very awkward phase. Like many 2005s at this level, patience is mandatory.

Decanted 60 mins. Medium nose of blueberries, black cherries and rose. Well balanced palate with medium+ acid, medium fine tannnins and good black cherries. Has a good weight in the mouth and persistence. Developing secondary farmyard, sous bois notes. Drinking ideally now and will do so for next 3-4 years.

Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges and Clos Vougeot (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco) : Ruby center, light edge. Sweaty black fruit and a touch of green herbs. On opening this bottle was rather reserved but a bit of air opened this up immensely. Nose of very pretty red fruits, mushroom, earth, moved towards being much more serious and structured with about 2 hours of air. Wonderful balance, great translucent garnet colour. Very pretty wine that has some distance to go still.

Gorgeous and wild aromas of ultra ripe cherries, morel mushrooms, chocolate and tar. Pretty young and searing on the palate tho, with screaming tannin and acidity that kinda rips the palate to shreds. Definitely needs food!
