Weihnachtsgeschenk - Maul - Gaul… Drink up. Pop & Pour Nach 10 Minuten noch ein aufbäumen von Frucht - Kirschig. Sonst schon ein Tabak-Leder-Pferdesatteltaschen-Pauillac. 1992 war ja ein eher schwaches Jahr im Bordö. Und die für mich übliche CS-Dominanz bei CB wohl drum nicht ausgeprägt. Und meine ,Liebe‘ für Merlot ist ja bekannt. :-) Im weiteren Verlauf deutlich mehr Liebstöckel als uns allen lieb ist. Unharmonische Säure im Nachklang.

Mittleres Granatrot, dicht anregende Nase, nicht zu intensiv, schon gar nicht aufdringlich. Reichlich (schwarze ?) Früchte sehr gut ausbalanciert. Gute Harmonie Nichts Grünes (Paprika) mehr. Von der Frucht getragen, nach 21Jahren! Cassis, Kirschen, dunkle Pflaume noch nichts Terziäres klassische Eleganz. wird man auch in 10 Jahren noch mit Genuss trinken können…

From such a mediocre vintage this was surprisingly good. Perhaps a bit simple, but has all the attractive cedar and tobacco notes, with some black fruit still clinging on. Very enjoyable.

Robe rouge très sombre, nez de sous-bois, bouche moins complexe que le nez mais avec une belle persistence. Très bon, pas sûr qu'il s'améliore avec le temps.

From MG. Drunk over 3 h. Cork only a bit soaked, pulled out, but crumbled into two pieces. PnP. Nice nose. Only medium/ light bodied. With time and air it got much better. Not really typical, strong and masculin Pauillac. The Lilian-Ladouys 1995 we had then (to the cheese) was superior but, of course, with less fruit. Price tag in 2021-02: 80€, so PQR not really breathtaking.

Smooth, almost resolved tannins, pleasant acidity, not much fruit left, forest floor, leather, maybe some green pepper, alive, pleasant, "past peak"

Last of a dozen bought on release, decanted for about 2 hours. This bottle didn't seem to have lost as much fruit as the one I noted in Jan 2020. Reasonably deep colour still, browning at the edges. Superb Pauillac nose with strong tobacco notes. Balanced and fresh on the palate, still reasonably fruity, and with a lingering, complex aftertaste. Classic stuff. I found another bottle in the cellar. On the basis of our last bottle we gave the wine 5h to open after decanting (fantastic fruit on the nose during decantiing). It still had hints of ‘medicinal’ flavours at first but these soon passed. It was good with sirloin steak etc. and showed good fruit, spice, complexity, and balance. Definitely benefits from a lot of time in the decanter, this starts off lightweight but fills out quite a bit. Some mature black fruit and pencil lead with a savoury medium finish, precisely what you’d expect from a batailley. This is obviously in its twilight years and isn’t worth keeping longer but it is modest and relaxed, like an old dog sleeping by the fire. 91

Last bottle. 5h after decanting, it was soft and attractive with all the positives in my last note. Blackberries and plums on the early palate with a short-lived hint of eucalyptus. Once again, it was very fine with a rare sirloin steak. Later, it showed more dark cherries on the mid/end palate. It was still developing as we finished the bottle. Deep- ruby-crimson. Classic bouquet of graphite, pencil shavings, cassia and dried blackcurrant. As wine opens, there is more woodsmoke, cedarwood and dried earth. Fairly full-bodied, the texture is fine-grained but with a Yorkie-bar gutsiness/solidity to it. A lively citrus acid with a cool earth feel to it on the mid-palate sprinkled with cocoa powder. Good depth of flavour but falls away quickly on the finish. Some firmer, almost sinewy tannins build towards the finish.

The last but one of a dozen I bought on release. Decanted about an hour before drinking. This has been a pretty good wine for the year, but it is losing its fruit now and I think it needs drinking up soon.

Christmas Day turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Decanted three hours as have learnt that this Batailley needs it.. it fills out with a good decant. Typical lead pencil Pauillac, deep blackberry fragrance, beautifully resolved and quite long with a touch of smoke. Very enjoyable at this age but it does need the decant to appreciate.

Almost a year on from our last bottle. Decanted 4h prior. Good colour and very fragrant, spicy nose with cedar notes. As before, a very rich palate with dark plums, spice, some 'smoke', cedar pencil, maybe a hint of fennel developing on the end taste. Soft with gentle, balanced acidity and very soft, integrated, slightly dusty tannins. Very good with food (rare sirloin steak). Kind of what you’d expect from a batailley. Typical Paulliac aroma and savoury, tweed jacket style palate which is a little dry. Some nice juniper notes on the nose and lovely crisp mouthwatering, oaky finish, but not dazzling. 90

Good colour and nose - mainly dark fruits. Decanted 4h prior. A surprisingly rich palate at this stage: prunes (less of the expected blackberry/blackcurrant fruit), dark plum stones, spice (more on my palate than my wife's) a hint of tobacco/liquorice with fennel developing on the end taste. Good, fragrant nose when first opened. A little dusty tannin when first decanted but the blackberry/blackcurrant fruit was there. After 5 hours, it showed plenty of rich, spicy berry and dark cherry fruit with good balance and length. Still some late tannins and the austerity began to show over time. Good with food, when it softened and became richer. Not a great vintage but a very nice wine.

Ich war gespannt, was der Jahrgang 2002 bringt. Schöne Farbe im Glas. Typische Noten nach Kirsche, etwas Schwarzbeere, Vanille alles schön eingebunden und rund. Guter Wein.

PnP. Nose of Sous Bois and woody aromas. Palate had slight bitter dark berries and more oak. Tannins was very fine and balanced. Medium finish. Over the hill but provides pleasant drinking.
