I bought this a couple of years ago in an obscure bakery on the bank of Lake Como. The bottle was standing next to local crackers and risotto and I kind of forgot about it in my cellar. I opened it with low expectations but was I in for a treat! Wow, this wafted from the glass. The wine is almost translucent, showing so much complexity. Medium+ intensity on the nose with clear vulcanic (sulphur) notes, minerality, sweet cherry, laurel, …

Pnp, blind tasting for guest. High acidity rustling first, then deep forest berries juice, juniper, light leather, sap, ending on bloody orange juice with volcano chalk. That is a mineral style with tertiary notes. It has a kind of rusticity, even if fine flavours, the acidity is very high. Not in the same dimension of the burgundy velvets. My bling taster has no doubt, they stayed close to sangiovese, and almost guessed this Nerelo Mascalese. No idea of the potential …

During an Italian walk about tasting, so only brief impressions. Grape variety Nerello Mascalese. Translucent red. Very strange nose here, bacon, extremely stinky, rotten meat to the point that it is faulty. Drying finish. Meh!

Lo Hei at Yan + late night at M&M's (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore) : Characterful, and really yummy. The nose was perfumed and pretty, with lovely drifts of roses and smoke, sweet little red berries, and lovely little kisses of earth, herb and spice. Such a beautiful nose. The palate had real character to it, and was delicious to boot - with fine, powdery tannins and nice acidity running through nicely delineated flavours of black cherries and berries. Nice finish …

Blood and iron and pencil shavings on the nose. Blueberry and blackberry on the front of the palate with great fruity and citrus acidity. Blood orange notes. Bracing acidity and astringency. Wait 5 years to drink this one. 90-91.

Winorama: A winter in Wineland II; 1/6/2018-1/14/2018 (Portland, Eureka, Napa) : Funny because I'm writing this note a few days later and I have very little recollection of this wine. My notes have cranberry a number of times including a close-out point that it's lots of cranberry. Called it an easy drinker so I imagine quite approachable despite the tannin. There's a clarity to the wine that I appreciated as well.
