Tyrrell's, Vat 9 Shiraz, Hunter Valley

NobleRottersSydney - Graeme's Aussie Aromatics (Glass Brasserie, Sydney) : {screwcap, 13%} [Graeme] Mid-garnet, right for age. Fruit-driven, partly developing nose of plums and soft red berries. Some spice and clean earth emerges in addition on the palate, which has medium/high acidity and medium powdery tannins. It’s very ‘Hunter’ in the best modern sense, with a soft-edged but persistent aspect to the medium/long finish. Still improving, but ought to drink well for at least another decade.

2024 Tyrrell’s Private Bin White and Red Release Tasting (Customs House, Brisbane) : Showing more oak than the sacred sites wines, yet balanced with its bigger and more rounded fruit. Not a hair out of place, yet holding interest. Complete wine. Fantastic length. A star in this lineup.

Screw cap. 13% alc. Cherry, raspberry, plum, pepper. Medium weight with good intensity. Fine, silty tannins. Layered. Plenty of interest here. Early in its development.

2013 vintage

Screwcap, 13% alc. Graphite, raspberry and redcurrant, forest floor, earth, vanilla and a floral note. Freshly Red fruited and earthy on the energetic palate. Just medium bodied. Well balanced acidity and a lightly chalky tannin, supple finish. Opinion: Excellent showing. Drink anytime over next 8 years. This could be a bit of a sleeper that surprises people in 20-30 years.

At only 13% alc it is effortless, velvety and beguiling. Medium bodied but wonderfully balanced. Tasty.

Bright garnet red, no age at all. Red cherries and raspberries first hit the nose, and edge of black cherry fruit and light peppery tannins. Refined, doesn't seem to have aged at all. Fresh cherry and fine acidity, dash of menthol cube, restrained acidity bite in the background. Classic Hunter shiraz, light, not overpowering and nice layers give it depth. Rather spitzig, showing the style of wine making (more pinot than Aussie shiraz). The acid is thankfully starting to mellow but there is still time to wait for complexity. It’s still savoury blackberry jam in style, youthful in spite of being a gentle, even (almost) light weight, wine. Under screwcap even a lighter vintage like this might last a long while. I recommend you give it a good shake, and then decant for 30+ minutes. 13%, screwcap

Drinking extremely well now with a good acid line and integrated tannins to hold it for another five years. Mid weight with the lightness of its savoury touch that speaks of its Hunter terroir with the addition of the Tyrrell’s imprimatur. A one hour decant and time in the glass definitely helps.

Screwcap, 13% alc. Late release in 2021. Rich, burgundy velvet red. Fading towards the rim, yet no bricking. A good marriage between earthy fruit and oak aromas. Cherry, raspberry, licorice, and tobacco, with a damp earth top note. Only medium bodied, yet with wonderful balance and composure. Excellent length. Light nose, not very intense. Bright fruit, agree with comment of being on the cranberry spectrum, raspberry and earth comes up after decanting. Light to medium bodied wine. Soft tannins, high acidity, long finish of bright, crunchy fruit. Suitable for charcuterie where the acid of the wine will cut the fat of the meat. This will have a long slow glide path. Does not benefit from being too cold, makes it look leaner than it needs or wants to be.

Developing nicely, but I thought lacked a bit of cohesion, which is not what I expected from a 12 year old shiraz. Still bright fruits - red and darker berries, with a cranberry type acidity, hint of chocolate and caramel oak, with a slight meatiness developing. Tannins have mainly resolved to a silky palate, and there's good length. It's just that the fruit and acidity felt a bit disjointed. I'm being picky - it really is a good, tasty wine.

Bright garnet, a young looking deep ruby. Crunchy red fruits on the nose, some sulphur, and young blackberries. Full, smooth warmth, tannins are present, tastes young and slightly immature. Mainly crunchy red fruits and damson in the background. Perhaps expecting more from a bottle in this price range? (A$70)

Nose: medium+ intensity. Spice, pepper, oak, plums, red cherries and cranberries. Palate: medium bodied, still showing good fruit. Very soft tannin with a persistent finish. There is a little bit too much acidity for me, so it is slightly unbalanced. But still a very good wine.

Mid weight Hunter Shiraz - perfectly in its drinking window with no need to rush. Lovely bright purple and blue fruit with some autumnal notes just starting to emerge.Good line of acid and ever so easy to drink.

2010 vintage

Tyrrell's Vat 9 Vertical : Still young and in need of more time in the cellar, the 2013 Vat 9 was initially rather reticent on the nose, arms and legs on the palate with raspy tannins. With air, the elements melded together better, with bright red fruits and raspberry acidity coming to the fore.

Tyrrell's Vat 9 Vertical : Pale transparent ruby with a slight blue tint. Juicy and vibrant, fine tannins, perhaps the sour cherry acid protrudes out slightly, fleshes out a bit with air. A shorter-term Vat 9, with its peak around the next 5-10 years.

Bright and fruit driven, with fine tannins. Medium bodied. Drink or hold.

2009 vintage

Seemed to have a reductive barnyard nose with a touch of sulphur kissing the palate. Maybe it’s the stelvin enclosure that has limited development. Needs a bit of time to blow away. Mid weight wine, primary red fruit with some sour cherry bites with herbs. Unlikely to open the next one for a couple of years.

2010 vintage

Dusty plum on the nose but with a richer palate of blackberry and spices and well integrated tannins and acid. This is more of an older traditional Hunter style with less obvious juby blue and red fruits at the fore. The finish is dry and savoury and is made for steak dishes. Probably close to its drinking window.

Nice bouquet - cassis, vanilla, tobacco. Highly acidic, not much fruit and generally disappointing to drink. Will not buy again.

This is a lovely lighter bodied Hunter just starting to enter its drinking window. On day two fruits tend to squishy purple and blue berries, perky acid, and an autumnal length. A bit dull at the moment. Oak and tannins seem ok, fruit muted and feels a bit out of balance. Some sharper acid piercing in places. Hopefully it’s just working through adolescence

If anything, the palate has lightened in the last five months although the candied fruit note is becoming more evident. The nose remains lighter than you might expect in a ten year old Hunter shiraz. Certainly, there is not the slightest hint of sweaty saddles in this wine.

A light pretty berry nose but the palate is more impressive. Blue fruits are evident on the palate with noteable spices on the finish which is pleasantly persistent. This is a lovely medium bodied Hunter that epitomises the Tyrrell style. It will live on the acid backbone and perhaps fill out a little under the oak finish. Not as rich as the ‘09 MP OP & OH tasted the other day but a worthy Oz Day wine with the BBQ.

Fine and taut initially, with red and black fruits. Almost has a bit of spritz at first. This settles with a decant. Needs time to open and reveal itself. It's medium bodied at most. So well balanced. High toned, bright fruits. Good length.

Perfumed, with red flowers and red fruits. Elegant, spicy, layered light to medium palate. There's a fine line of acidity through to the decent finish. Nice.

Moncur Syrah/Shiraz (Bistro Moncur, Sydney) : Ripe plum, slight new oak, sweet spice…juicy, fleshy with plums that are slightly less ripe here. Joined by black pepper and quite dense tannins though the fruit persists…Nice now will improve.

Hunter Valley - 6 Cellar Doors (Hunter Valley) : {screwcap, 13%, A$56} If the 2011 seemed youthful, this could pass for a barrel sample. Liquid blackberries, pure and concentrated. Medium/high dusty tannins, even palate, great balance along the tongue, medium/full-body (although no-one’s ever going to pick it as Barossa), and a savoury medium/long finish. All class, an needs an age to develop. Easily comparable to; possibly exceeds the ’11 for overall quality.

#BYOB - Terrific wine! Had it had just an inch more of character on the nose this would have been truly great. Now its mainly dominated by oak, spices, some chocolate, slight burned smokiness a little pepper and just hints of barnyard. Good complexity, but nothing that really gets me going. Lifted berry and plum aromas, with violets and rose perfume. The palate is fine and elegant. Medium bodied at best. Spices, pepper, and red and blue fruits. The finish is carried by very fine tannins. It's still primary. Looking forward to following this one over the next 2+ decades. There's a big upside.

Aromas of toasty oak, roast coffee and a little hint if something vegetal. Really pure ripe black fruit on the entry with a nice floral character on the midpalate and a long toasty finish.
