A good dose of oak and mint when 1st popped but settled down after a few hours and was much better on day two revealing crushed black and blue fruits, smoked meats, sagebrush, fennel and anise with a nice lingering finish. Another value at $11.99 at my LWS.

This is a wine that keeps the “wow factor” front and center. Each time I open one of these wines, they over perform - not in a showy way, but rather in a way that causes me to to reflect that maybe I’ve (once again) underestimated the performance power of this winery. The wine is lovely in the glass with a deep burgundy color on the rim and quickly becoming opaque looking toward the core. The nose rings with blackberry, …

A deep blood red color showing a wine that still reflects youthful qualities. A peppery nose with smoked meats and loads of blackberry. Rich on the palate without being jammy at all. Clearly California, but still with a nod to the Old World with some tobo leaf and iodine minerality. The mouthfeel is big and ripe. The back label speaks of being a blend of 11 microvinified lots. It leaves me wondering if some of the Purisima vineyard fruit is …

Smoky meats and rich, dark berry fruit on the nose. Deep blackberry and mocha on the palate. Med-long finish. This is really delicious and a great QPR.

Following my recent enjoyment of the 2000 version of this from mag, I was interested to see how the 07 version is coming along. Three years have passed since my last visit to this corner of the cellar. I need to let another five years go by. This remains an amazingly youthful wine. Magenta and cranberry colors cling to the rim. Beyond the rim and to the core, the wine is inky dark. The nose says everything about the wines …

Even after a quick pop 'n' runthrough a Vinturi aerator, tasted far too much effervescence initially and was better on the nose than on the palate. Residual sugars on bottom served as visual indicators of same. Once it mellowed and aired out a bit - 30 min. plus - started coming into its own with notes of chocolate, raspberry, and cherry. Would like to try again without initial complications.

This wine is very young, as it doesn't offer much of a bouquet initially. On the palatte, it is also a tight, tannic beast. The tannins are hiding everything. After about half an hour in the glass, the wine opens up with some kalamata olives and burnt meat. The palate also shows some nice plum and blueberry notes in addition to olive and smoky meat flavors. Beckmen is definitely a good producer, and I'd jump to try some of their …

California Night (Binny's Highland Park, highland park IL) : nose: very smokey nose along with black fruits, meaty tones, black cherries, and some dark berry tones. Good medium depth with good tart fruit to go with the smokier part of the nose taste: good full bodied feel with good tannins. Well balanced with tones of charcoal, smoke, black fruits, black cherries, and some black licorice. Good richness but with a balance at the same time, this is far from a …

An amazingly youthful purple; almost as if it was bottled last month. The nose is sweet with brown sugar, coffee, herbs, thyme and violets. The palate expands to brined black olives, warm powdery tannins and a round mouthfeel. A very approachable wine and one that will only improve with age. Only the slightest hint of a shadow of sediment on the shoulder. 14.8% alc. With crusty bread and Roaring 40s blue and mushroom tapenade. Recommended.

A deep purple rim running to a near black core; oh yeah, this is a young ‘un! The 14.8% alc., shows on th nose on the first glass poured just after the cork is pulled. Whether the wine just needed time to come together or I acclimated to it, I cannot say, but 30 minutes later when I tasted it, the alc. was not noticeable on the nose. Layers of flavors going on here. Good dark fruits of plum, plum …

Tasted at the winery. Wine of the day tasting in Santa Ynez. Smokey, meaty nose with some nuttiness (oxidized?). Genuinely weird and interesting wine I'd love to decant and let evolve to see where it goes. Tastes like dark fruit, though, giving a truly wonderful contrast to the nose. Didn't have the sweetness of the other wines on the tasting flight, either. 88-92 range, but no formal rating. Just a noteworthy wine.

Nice, smokey pork thing on the nose with ripe red fruits. Fairly full on the palate, but with nice acidity. Pretty rich. Good stuff.
