Bright, fresh, deep flavored, fine finish. A wine that made us pause as it opened up over the course of dinner.

My first experience with this producer - a present - and a very good experience - we had the wine on a Nebiolo night - where we tasted 2013-2014-2015 from different producers - I really like this one you get mature cherries and forrest strawberries. You also get menthol and hints of vanilla - a well balanced wine - tannins and acidity are both medium plus but very well integrated - and the wine has a niche balance - I …

From 375, thanks KM. Couldn’t remember the night, but I’ve got this bottle! Fruit gets into raspberry. Almost a first for Martinenga? IMHO. Generous, easy to drink. Comes off as light tannin (at the moment).

Gorgeous nose of tar and roses, into dark, black cherry and deep pomegranate. Dusty tannins and a fabulous astringency balance with oak toast and a long, saline finish. Nice, expressive blend of the traditional and the new.

Entering a perfect drinking window. Mature red small fruits, a hint of liquorice an balsamic notes. Perfectly balanced acidity, suave tannins and a velvet touch. A feminine Barbaresco perfectly representing the history of Martinenga.

Oh what do we know. But this is the best Barbaresco we have drank over this crazy year plus of lockdown. Works with beef, lamb, venison, chicken, and, if it has breathed, on its own. It’s a beauty.

Powerful, elegant, modern. Dark cherry and raspberry, with firm, dusty tannins, oak toast, tobacco, and a subtle, floral earthiness. Juicy acidity and a medium, black cherry finish. Balance, structure, and drinking beautifully with several hours of air. Worth a hold.

Drinking this two years later and the fruit is starting to show some beautiful flavor with nice structure behind the tannins. Some definite cherry notes. Gorgeous and I bet it will be even better in a few years!

Tasted at the Barolo and Barbaresco World Opening Tasting Event in NYC. Mostly modern styled Barrique aged wine that is fermented and macerated in a 30-40% mix of cement and stainless steel. Good structure, fresh tasting and smelling with some smokiness, a touch of vanilla and red cherry with a long finish. Pleasant wine but not a blockbuster.

Deligthful wine with enormous potential for the long run. Was decanted for 2 hours in this case, which really opened it up. The tannins was firm but well integrated, the balance superb and the fruit good - dark cherries and blackberries. It also gives you hints of licorice and tobacco. Clearly not at its peak yet, I would save it for another 3-5 years, even though I really enjoyed it after the decanting.

Dark red cherry, a touch of stone on the nose, as well as a hint of tobacco leaf. Incredibly approachable at such a young age, likely because of the 375 format. Half bottles are ready to drink right now, and I wouldn’t wait much longer. Medium- acidity and wonderfully supple tannins provide just enough structure for a wine that’s good on its own in the summertime shade or paired with veal and other tender red meats. Finishes with a subtle …

7 Days in Italy II; 2/17/2019-2/23/2019 : Some toast to the nose, almost Bourbon-y toast. On the palate, really tight right now. Too young and too wound up.

2018 Visit to Marchesi di Grésy with Jeffrey Chilcott (Martinenga, Barbaresco) : A ‘deeper’ seeming nose of dark fruit and menthol, with lifted floral and spicy aromas. A very attractive bouquet suggesting both dark rose and violet perfumes. On palate, the best of the three Martinengas. Succulent, ripe and opulent fruit. More volume and power than the other two Barbarescos. Nice fresh acidity. Nonetheless, a young, tightly coiled wine, needing another 3-5 years, I’d say.

Too much wood on the nose and mouth. Didn't really blow off after an hour and the wine didn't express much else over that time beyond a lot of tannin and negligible dark fruit.

Pop n pour and consumed over ~4 hours. Classic and traditional Nebbiolo. Perfumed, airy nose of dried cherries, dried flowers, herbs and licorice. Palate has light to medium fruit weight with grippy structure and coarse tannin, yet this is enjoyable now with and without food. The lighter fruit retains a plushness and softness despite the wine’s clear structure. This will probably shut down soon.

This bottle definitely needs more time. Fruit is still masked by grippy tannins that did not mellow after 2 hours of decanting and 2 more hours of swirling and enjoying. Patience will likely be rewarded with a beautiful wine with great underlying structure, but I will probably not open my next bottle for at least another 5 years.

Vindredi (Barolo & Barbaresco) (Bellevue, WA) : Tasted blind. Roses, tar, wood spice on the nose. More feminine nose. Red cherry, cola, spicebox, and potpourri on the palate. A bit astringent on the finish, with fine, drying tannins.

Very confident aromas, cherry, licorice and some dark brown kernel. I mean, I sound like a broken record, but this is another REALLY solid vintage for the basic Martinenga. Ripe red cherry fruit aromas. Yes, some oak really rides up on the palate right now, some bitter that will wrap in with time. Clay-ey tannin, a soft medium plus.

Sweeter dark red notes, some plastic kind of notes too, spices, balsamic, some herbs too. Medium-high tannin, pretty full bodied, medium-high acidity, good length. A little one-dimensional but nice.

2016 Marchesi di Grésy tasting with Jeffrey Chilcott (Martinenga, Barbaresco) : To be released in September or October 2016. Violets and other florals on the bouquet with dark cherries and other black fruit and a little tar. Again for the level, a really good Barbaresco. Fresh 2013 acids with a good volume of mainly dark fruit, peaty soil and creosote.
