Gerard Boulay, Sancerre, Mont Damnes

You would never know this is a 9 year old wine when tasting it blindly. So crisp and youthful for a Sancerre. Wish we had more but drank beautiful tonight while watching the sun set over the gulf while on vacation with family. Perfect wine for a perfect night. This wine can easily age for many more years but why wait with how well it’s drinking now.

SLDS July 2023 : Orange peel, apple and lemon on the nose. Lovely fruit weight with good depth and texture. Length also impresses. All components working well here.

Really not a lot here, a bit sour, lemon with some stone and mineral. Not great, either dumb or drink before it dies…and not an inexpensive quaff

White peach and candied notes with a decent acidity and maybe a slight frizzante property. Waxy with a stone fruit finish. It’s good.

This bottle had a spritz and really no flavor. The cork was fine, but obviously the wine was flawed.

Very pale yellow, aroma of stone fruits, hint of blackcurrant leaf. So subtle and elegant. Bone dry, gooseberry and nettle flavours. Very fine.

This is good, although I think I prefer the Clos that I had the other day. This has a bright lemony note on the nose, but feels less substantial on the palate.

Still delicious; this bottle seemed heavier on pyrazines and maybe even slightly reduced, but opened over about an hour to reveal lovely ripe citrus fruits, green apple, fresh grass, hay, green pepper, and gooseberry. Good depth and lovely finish.

Served with an English Pea "gnudi" (see the Vespertine summer menu for more info). On the nose: lovely grass and gooseberry, sweet pea (brought out by the pairing), grapefruit. On the palate, fantastic acidity, gooseberry, tarragon, sweet apple, yuzu, kumquat and a lovely tangy finish.

This wine really scratches the itch when I want a Sauvignon Blanc. Bright and refreshing. A little substance but still light on its feet. Citrus mineral, fresh herbs, good acidity.

Very good Sancerre; expressive nose; very classic with some lemon peel, fresh cut grass, crushed stone. The palate is fresh and expressive, good concentration and lingering finish.

It seems even more persistent and generous than 6 months ago. Just a fantastic SB and it’s so good now, I don’t see any need to hold. 5+12+18+9= 94

Lovely at cellar temp. Pop and pour. Sweet tarragon, a touch of va, melon, melon rind, a touch of vanilla, gooseberry, and great richness. Lovely acidity and density, more sour apple, gooseberry, grapefruit pith and nut oil. Very nice.

This is a lighter-bodied version of Boulay's Mont Damnes, but pretty darn tasty all the same. Very easy to toss back a glass (as I just did), with good acidity, a citrus accent and a saline note as well. Very likable, but it doesn't strike me as a long distance runner.

Tastes like the best grapefruit I’ve ever eaten, plus some kiwi, apple, melon... a myriad of tropical fruit. A bright and crisp palate that’s driven by acidity, then grabs hold of the flavors and paints them across the tastebuds with plenty of endurance for a long finish. Reliably Boulay. 5+11+18+9= 93

This was another great bottle. This seemed to lean a bit more towards the gooseberry and grass, but still has lots of citrus and saline notes with stone and floral notes coming through with air. Crisp and fresh, yet feels mouth filling and expansive at the same time. Delicious.

Penetrating aromas of gooseberry, tarragon and anise - bright, fresh and clean. Rich but balanced, a big sauvignon with some complexity (and a stated 13% abv - tastes like 14%. Not hot, but large-scaled). Not the delicate, astringent sauvignon traditionally to be expected from Sancerre, but certainly a pleasure, and can really stand up to food. Impressive.

Terrific complement to potato waffles w smoked trout, creme fraiche and salmon roe, along with grilled bass. Great acidity, soft citrus flavors.

Perfect. Great body, green apple/pear hint of citrus. Delicious on its own, drank with lobster, corn and cole slaw. Loved it

From a bottle opened last night. Crisp Granny Smith Apple on the nose. Slightly dilute on the palate, but still with enough tension/zip to provide pleasurable drinking. I had a glass of the '16 Boulay Clos de Beaujeu at dinner with a ceviche course and liked the pairing - maybe it was the good pairing, but that wine seemed to have more to it than this glass of Mont Damnes. All that said, while this won't be a long-aging classic …

Another excellent bottle; lovely nose of saline inflected citrus fruit, crushed stone, a hint of pear, just a hint of grass and gooseberry; the palate here is delicious, has a nice flesh and roundness on the feel, but good acidity and punch. Classic Chavignol Sancerre with plenty of aging potential, but quite tasty now.
