Remhoogte Pinotage Vantage Estate Wine

Last one, sadly. Still very nice, we both liked.

Very nice. Black cherry, tobacco, enough acidity. Went better than I'd expected with our prime rib. Much better than the last ones I'd tried a few years ago. It might be hitting its peak.

Good TN from ERIK, brought in brown paper bag to a big-A Penfolds release tasting for fun. Only 1 of 4 peeps got close then doubted the guess which was actually spot on (with south hemisphere hint). This was super dark and earthy, with wafting wood/BBQ smoke, helped after ~2 hrs air. Nice leather and dark berry with forest floor and that edgy Pinotage dusty flavor, similar to Rutherford but more tricky to describe. Enjoyed as well on Day 2 …

Wow, this was dark (color). Deep ruby when poured, though aroma was lighter than the color would suggest. Cola and bark (?) notes. A bit of tightness and tannin on the first sip -- definitely needs some time to breathe. Opened up nicely and was surprisingly good with some speck from Alto Adige.

This pinotage from South Africa is very approachable, and doesn't have any of the bad characteristics this varietal has been strapped with all these years. Obviously the winemakers of S.A. are upping their game, and using more modern techniques and focusing on quality over yield. This very food friendly wine at 14% avb has a deep ruby color to it and it healthy to the eye and nose. It is very aromatic and show some of its youth. The aromas …
