Fernand & Laurent Pillot Volnay

Not what I would expect from a Volnay, little fruit, high acidity. thin.

A better bottle than the one one I had last year. This one was more open, with ripe red cherries and chalky flavors. Decent for the price.

Not much of anything, nice acidity, but that's it.. .

This bottle was quite lean, austere and angular. Maybe the wine has closed down and needs time to come out of its shell.

Visiting London, Galway, Dublin and Paris; 9/14/2019-9/29/2019 (England, Ireland and France) : Pillot's 2015 Volnay is a seductively aromatic Pinot that is effusive of red plums, cherries, violets, baking spices and orange zest. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic, judiciously oaked and with well-woven alcohol (listed as 13.5%), it delivers flavors mirroring the nose. Nez parfumé sur la rose. Bouche bien droite, finale un peu courte. Ensemble plus en finesse qu'en puissance.

High cherry perfume on that one. Fresh and a bit hard edged but not too sharp.

Volnay was one of the absolute sweet spots in this fantastic vintage, and this humble wine shows why. Loads of rich red cherry, earth, violets and spice, all held beautifully together with ripe and smooth tannins. I doubt this will ever shut down and should be highly enjoyable for the next decade. Very highly recommended.
