Gorgeous middle aged Vina Real, a sweet sheen of oak that seems to be knitting well, plenty of tobacco and cherry, brilliant acidity, rounded off with age, piquillo, some balsamic punch. Drink now or keep waiting if you don't do the Rioja oak thing.

Medium dark in the glass. Showing a bit of brown colour. Lots of oak on the nose with red fruit. It is medium bodied. With medium acidity and super soft tannins. On the palate it has red fruit and coffee. It is not super long. It is fully mature. I doubt it has 5 more years left. I will drink mind in the next year or two. Nice, but lacks a bit of power to really impress me. 2 = …

Still young and was difficult to open up. Decant for 2 hours and the jammy nose blunted significantly. Heavy black fruits with a hint of sweetness also chilled a bit with time. Revisit in two years.

Medium color. Typical pine nose from the oak. Middle weight, undistinguished fruit. Dry finish. Not too much to say about this one. Very middle of the road.

Classic traditional Rioja, great now but plenty of life ahead. Decanted for 4 hours.

Classic Rioja to me. A little syrupy though. Nice nose, pepper and earth and funk. Red fruits, smooth and easy to drink.

Decanted for 3 hours. Berry and vanilla nose, still young but well balanced, I think this will improve a point or two over time. Classic rioja!

The lack of acidity makes this wine look cramberry syrup to me. Having said this, I have to recognise the good concentration, earthy aromas, and a firm backbone with a nice length.

A bit light and tart on opening but much better after some air. Bright red pitch of fruit. Elegant and smooth traditional Rioja that is already a pleasure to drink. Not a terribly complex wine (especially compared with the 85 I had some time ago) but perhaps that is because it's a little young. Stern but smooth tannins. After some time in the glass it evolved some more, with slight oak mocha notes revealing.

Good / Very good – clear mid ruby appearance; fruit on nose; dry to off-dry; low acidity; mid but very soft tannins; medium body; mid length finish; lovely soft balance; pleasant red fruits yet still had some tannins to give structure and body. Lovely Rioja. Decanted 1 hour before drinking through a Vinturi.

Very traditional style of rioja. Pretty good but will hopefully improve with a few more years (I recently tasted the 1988, 1976 and 1966, all of which were drinking well).

Centenary Wineries, Venerable Traditions spanish wine tasting with Helio San Miguel (Instituto Cervantes, New York City) : Deep ruby color. Nose of caramel, spice and sweet black cherries, with a lactic note. Medium bodied on the palate with fine tannins. On opening, it was a little light on the palate, but it gained weight and presence with air. Pretty Rioja.
