Dinner with Liz, V, and Anna : Acetone notes are present, but the refinement of the red fruits, and the tobacco and floral notes liftvthis wine into a very refined space. Very tannic, but the tannins are not harsh, and the clarity of the palate and its long, involving finish are strong points of this wine. Excellent!

The ‘08 Cotta has some attractive features, but the flavor profile of the wine appears to be aging faster than its texture. Likely due to oak usage, the flavors here are slightly muddled and there is significant drying tannin on the palate, which seems unlikely to integrate in the near term. The nose is dark and spicy, with dark red plum fruit, dark floral aromas, menthol, and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine is medium in body but lacks …

Not bad, not good. Slightly tired, fresh acids, fading but resolved calm red fruit spectrum, with bite.

A decent amount of browning evidences its age. The nose is rather unexpressive. On the palate, the fruit is chunky and unrefined, lacking focus and detail. This improves with air, but it's time to drink. It is okay, but a letdown given the pedigree, and will not improve further from here.

I thought this was very good and well made, but a little modern/strong oak influence for my taste.

Liquorice root, prune, dark chocolate, green flowers and leather. Forward and thick chewy tannins. An unusual wine, rustic, and a little disjointed. Big presence on the nose- an arresting aroma. Had me looking for more and more. Past it or not quite there- it kept me thinking. Hmmmm. 92 or 4/5

Drank blind, bricking on edges, thought a 20 year old wine based on the color, decanted for 30min, the initial caramel nose blows off to reveal rich red fruits with flint & minerals, silky in the mouth, cherries, good complexity & depth, pleasure & educational to follow it over 3 hours

Perhaps a little disjointed at first but came together over time. Strong fine tannins, licorice, star anise, red fruited. Faired really well in a strong Barolo Bracket as the surprise outsider.

Decanted one hour. Translucent garnet, bricking rim. Fig and kirsch compote nose. Much fuller bodied than I would have expected - this is one of those explosive wines that attacks all across the palate and manages to hit a whole range of notes from the start - dark cherry, sandalwood, cassis and fine tannins etched across a long final. Sweetness and prominent acidity in excellent balance. Very glad to have bought this. My first of a stash of 6 tonight …

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL) : I've been a little wary of Sottimano sometimes because of the partner wine in this flight (the 1998 of the same wine), but the 2008 seems to have dialled back the oak quite a significant amount. The wines are certainly polished in comparison to my benchmark Barbaresco, the Produttori, but here, it does seem to add some complexity rather than detract from the rest of the wine. Earthy, with a good amount of …

Another excellent bottle of this and looking at my last few notes makes me wonder if I am going through my stash too quickly... but it‘s just really irresistable. Medium garnet color with some bricking towards the rim. Beautifully perfumed notes of dark plum, dark cherries, sweet spices like licorice, some tobacco, flowery notes and menthol. It‘s medium+ bodied with excellent mid-palate persistence, medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin that is ripe but present. Very good length. A beautiful Cotta from …

Drank over two days. Solid on the first day even better on the second. Great qpr. Earthy, tangy, long finish.

Disappointed in this one. Tannins were harsh and not enough acidity to balance the stewed fruit and medicinal aftertaste. Maybe some interesting notes emerge with some more time in bottle but not tonight.

Very similar showing to my last bottle. Beautiful notes of darker cherries, dark plum, sweet spices, menthol, licorice, truffle and plenty of flowery notes of crushed violets. It's medium+ bodied with good mid-palate persistence, has medium+ tannin that is ripe and medium+ acidity. Very good length. An excellent Cotta and year after year one of my go-to Barbarescos... It combines the richness of the Cru with the elegant house-style. Beautiful!

Medium ruby/garnet color. Lightening up a littke towards the rim but not much bricking yet. Perfumed notes of crushed flowers, dark cherries, plums, menthol/eucalyptus, some sweet spices, also some tobacco, truffle and some mushroom. It's medium+ bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that's excellent quality. Very good length. A super delicious Barbaresco.

Spicy fruit but still too young and tannic. Somewhat thin on the finish.

Very similar tasting note to the one dated April 2015. Drank it next to the 2012 Perbacco from Vietti (which is a great value in Nebbiolo) and it totally crushed it.

A streamlined and buff yet very approachable young barbaresco. Very expressive on the nose with cherries and blackcurrants and strong vein of bitter almond/cherry pit. Tannins are sweet and grainy while lots of acid keep the whole thing very lifted. Gorgeous young wine, full of energy and tension. Wonder what it will be like when it has acquired some of the softness of age. At any rate, it is certainly worth drinkiing one now for the sheer vibrancy of its …

Clear dark garnet. Nose of cherry, violets, licorice, and vanilla. Medium palate of black cherry, minerals, and vanilla. Excellent length. Refreshing acidity. Young tannins. Terrific Barbaresco.

Very similar TN to the one dated 7/31/2013, but in the meantime the tannin has softened some more (like medium+) and the acidity came down slightly (medium). A very round, fleshy Barbaresco. I still love the eucalyptus/menthol thing that is going on.

Quite generous and complex nose with bright red fruit, mainly raspberries and with a hint of sweetness. I also find notes of notes of wood glue, tar and roses in the background. The wine has a fantastic mouthwatering acidity and again quite fruity taste. The tannins are sandy and a bit dry. A few hours after opening the bottle some herbal notes appear. This wine starts much better than it finishes, but in total it is a good wine that …

Decanted for an hour. Beautiful, well made wine, which shows nicely and elegantly typical Nebbiolo characteristics. However, still very young and restrained, too. I will wait another 3-4 years before opening the next bottle.

High-end Nebbiolo-Tasting @ home. Double-decanted and slow-oxed for 6 hours. Deep ruby color. Beautiful nose of cherries, plums, violets, some sweet spices/oak and plenty of mint/eucalyptus. Medium-full body with beautiful mint, flowers, cherries and spices again. There is a medium-high tannin (silky and sweet) and a medium-high acidity providing freshness. Great length. This is a very beautiful, more modern interpretation of Barbaresco. I love the fleshy, opulent style of Cotta, but it's still undeniably Barbaresco! It's at the beginning of …

Nebbiolo - traditionalists vs. modernists : Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Expressive nose of dark fruits with some dried fruits and floral notes with eucalyptus, nice and complex. On the palate the fruit dominates as well. Soft and caressing as the tannins are ripe and balance the fruit well. Really well done. Good length too.
