Lanson Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Age

Disgorged 2018. This was definitely in the toasty zone, and quite rich, to the point of being slightly too sweet. Good value and relatively impressive as an aperitif, but not ideal as a food match on this showing.

Burgundy Wimps (La Trompette, Chiswick) : Lightly mineral, smoky, bright lemon, linear, crisp, good length finish.

11/2016 disgorgement. Another very good bottle. Fresh, medium gold color. Jasmine, hay with some light lees notes. This just continues to be good. Do they make this anymore? I don’t see any tasting notes after this version….

Disgorged 2018, and still really fresh and energetic despite some pleasing evolution in flavour profile: lactic toffee, sourdough crust and grilled nuts are now dominant, and the trademark Lanson green apple note is receding with age. Quite bitter towards the finish, with a suggestion of burnt toast, but the final, lingering note is of sweet sherberty lime. The whole combination is literally mouthwatering!

Soft fine mousse. Deep straw colouring The extra age really shows here - perhaps a little too much for my preference but I’d still say it’s a good offering and probably better with food than as an aperitif. Lots of bruised apple fruit on the palate

Still drinking well. This is the 11/2016 disgorgement which you should note well. I had a few bottles in this case that were earlier - 2013 and 2011 I think and they were not nearly as good. This one is still fresh but also benefiting from time in bottle. Light lemon, with a creamy base along with white flowers like jasmine and honeysuckle. Some leesy notes but not pronounced. 92-93 Dg 16 Starts off with a healthy splosh, bubbles still very much alive. At first fruit compot, christmas spices, mild apple notes, caramel. Lively fine to medium bubbles. Front end is nicely developed while the back end is still quite acidic and slightly bitter. Very good density and body here. With a bit time aftertaste is slowly showing signs of lemon zesty acidity. Impressive, basically got everything from ripe sweetish pleasure to fresh zestiness.

Bright, youthful color, good weight, nice bubbles and a good finish. On a hot, humid night, this went very well. Drink/hold.

Disgorged 7-2012. Medium yellow color. What a distinctive nose!! Absolutely loaded with hardwood charcoal aromas, creosote and roasted hazelnuts. Rich and filling of the mouth, this has bright acidity and tension that helps keep this older cuvée together! Marzipan and bruised pit fruits and salty oyster shell in the finish. Fantastic! 94

Brioche and peach notes with quite a light nose, our first Lanson bubbly and it seems this is a multi vintage blend. Seems to have improved since the bottle enjoyed four years ago. This is from the 06/2016 disgorgement, which from what I can gather is a three vintage blend of the 2002/04/05 vintages and is comprised of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; aged for 5+years. "Running" Club Rich Man / Poor Man dinner (The leafy West London suburbs) : My last of these. A certain richness. Deeper golden colour than the cremant it was served beside. Just a rounded, well balanced champagne. I've had a few bottles of this and this was not the best, but close to the best.

Magnum, 2019 disgorgement. I think, despite the 'extra age', that we opened this too soon, as it showed much younger than a 2018 disgorgement drunk a couple of months ago. Piquant and full of Granny Smith and citrus. Drinking well but lacked complexity.

We all enjoyed this, but it lacked the impact and panache of the regular Extra Age - writing this note six days later and I can barely remember what the wine tasted like. Elegant enough, and a nice classic BdB aperitif, though.

Disgorged May 2018. I immediately loved the nose, full of character from the ageing: dough, honey, toasted nuts. I usually don't like Lanson, I think because I prefer Champagne that undergoes malo, and the green apple character of the house style remained the dominant feature on the palate, though this was nicely mellowed down and the fact the wine was so structured suggests there is plenty of scope for further ageing. Looking forward to trying again.

Served blind although I recognised and called it immediately. Rich, hints of sea shell and honey. Lovely balance between PN and chardonnay. Fresh nose, palate and mousse. Really great as usual.

Rather decent and very enjoyable with a few caveats. This was disgorged March 2019 and believe it’s a 2004/5/6 blend 25%/25%/50% Nice ageing on the nose but a lighter and crisp style. 11/2016 disgorgement. This has gotten better since two years ago. Lots of lemon up front, with a creamy base. The leesy notes from the extra age are apparent but not overdone. A thoroughly enjoyable wine that will likely continue to improve. Glad I bought a case of this one.

Definitely could taste the weight of the extra aging but the minerality still came through. Not very much carbonation.

Super elegant lemon zest mineral thing going on really nice wine, you can taste the age.

11/2016 disgorgement. I think this is 04/05/06 based on what I have seen online re 2016 dg. Nice bit of leesiness on nose. Bright yet creamy taste. Apple peel, lemon peel, cream, with the faintest bit of bread but quite subdued. Well balanced and fresh. Nice now but will hold for a few years and improve. Gets better and better in the glass with some air.

Deg 22/2014. My first tiime with the EA BdB. Nose and palate felt from two different decades. Whereas the nose felt almost too advanced, the palate was considerably fresher but also less interesting. Citrus dominant. Lacks some nerve in my book. Perhaps the dosage is too high for my taste. Medium concentration and length. 89-90p

Revisit this bottle later

It has been interesting to taste this along with the Beaumont de Creyeres Fleur Noir. The contrast is pretty clear and the Lanson shows a pungency, a white pepper character and a citrusy that are absent in the redder and softer Blanc de Noir. Pastry from yeast and honey from ageing are there as well and while fresh it anyway shows some stone fruits (peach especially). No formal notes taken but this was equivalent of a good vintage champagne (or better) with a toastiness, ripe/bruised apples and autolysis.

Light yeast and then apple.

I just recently started getting into champagne, so take this review with a grain of salt. This was really good. Crisp, floral, toasty, yeasty, acidic. The toasty quality really came thorough in a good way. This tasted as good, if not better, than most of the 6 Bollingers I recently tasted. At $60, this is a steal. Tasted like a $150 bottle. Highly recommend and should pair perfectly with a crab dish or grilled fish.
