Northern Rhone dinner : Initially a little candied and much more primary compared to the Barge alongside, colour had a bright purple hue that brought me to either St Joseph or Cornas. Locked in '11 Balthazar Cornas as my final guess which wasn't too far off, but was surprised that an Allemand was so open-knit as they are usually full of structure and tightly coiled blue fruit. Still not showing its full potential mind, this needs a lot more time.

Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL) : I preferred this a little bit more than the 2013 tonight. It's a little more black-fruited and full on the palate, which I appreciated. Darker complexion, more richness and depth on the palate, and just a slightly more intense wine.

This was excellent, and perhaps the best 2014 Northern Rhone I’ve had along with Gonon. It’s a vintage where the silky weightless texture of the producer shines through. I get raspberry fruit, strong black pepper, light green olive, a touch of leather. This one is all about texture and should do awesome with more time sideways.

Blind - guessed Cote Rotie, then Cornas. Was more polished than I was expecting from Cornas but made sense once the producer was revealed. Dark purple fruits, quite spicey with a rather gamey peppery profile. Drinking pretty well but there's still considerable structure here--tannins and acidity.

A suggestion of meat and leather to begin with. It breathed up wonderfully well and had such pure raspberry and blood plum fruits. There were notes of bacon fat, licorice and violets too. It was plush and layered and had perfectly ripe tannins carrying the long finish. Served from Magnums.

Allemand Chaillot survey (Chicago, IL) : A distinctively white-peppered nose, this comes across almost a little St. Joseph-like with that aroma and general lightness on the palate. Like the 2011, this is a relatively thinner wine, not showing the weight or the intensity of fruit as the other vintages. March Madness Wine Tasting : Served blind. I called it as Cote-Rotie because of the funk on the nose and I detected some Viognier in the blend. Animalistic and briary (almost furry texture). Very good and VERY young.

Double decanted and followed all evening. Pretty big contrast to the SQN (no surprise) with higher-toned fruit (red and black) and floral notes. So vibrant and, to my tastes, much more interesting. Last glass was the best as it was really firing at the end of the night.

Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Intronization (Aquavit) : Truly beautiful, classic, a bit of the iron ore, some mineral. A bit gamey. It's really just the structure and elegance of the wine that makes it special. From a magnum. I went back for seconds.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux) : This was an indulgence from some friends to let me feed my Rhone kick. It's also quite young and can use some more years but it is quite lovely. A bit of that black fruits, herbal and just a slight metallic tinge to it. I am a fan of these wines.

Thierry Allemand Tasting (Restaurant de Chine) : Double decanted. Whole dark fruit, quite fresh, chocolate, inky, fresh florals, orange fruit, spicy. Almost chewy texture, longer than Reynard on the finish, but thinner. 92-93

Lovely, savory nose of dark fruit, olives, brine, and herbs. Great acidity, medium tannins, with tart black cherries, olive brine, and blackberries on the palate. Along finish. This is drinking surprisingly well — very pleasurable and giving, but will certainly improve with more age. I’d say drink one now, wait 5 years for the next bottle.

Of course the 2014 Chaillot is in its early stages (although it is considered to be an early maturing and approachable vintage for Northern Rhône), but a multi-hour pre-dinner decant served it well as it was very open, giving and multidimensional showing great depth, power and an elegant backbone. Black raspberries, liquid stones, violets and a hint of black olive. There is a great midpalate richness leading to a long, finessed and lifted finish.

Probablement pas le moment de l’ouvrir mais je voulais voir ou le vin était rendu. Fruits rouges et noirs concentrés, violette. Le poivre se fait ressentir mais subtilement en fin de bouche. Il y a par contre un creux en milieu de bouche qui m’amène à penser que le vin est dans une mauvaise phase.
