Bernardus, Marinus, Monterey

The fruit is falling away on these and they’re getting more tertiary, some smoky meat, singed herbs. The palate is pretty soft, with some dark fruit showing through, but this might be subtly on the downhill.

slow ox, no decant. Aromas of black cherry, creme de cassis, and some herby flowers (lavender, fennel??) potpourri, spent coffee grounds, moderate bricking, the wine smells a bit sweet/porty without any booziness. In the mouth, the wine is round and opulent, tannins completely resolved. Full body, med- acid, low tannin. Pretty one noted on the palate: cherry cordial damp earth. Again, kinda porty. Cigar box, wet tobacco, black currant, and subtle baking spice underneath. No hard edges on the palate with smooth medium+ tannins. Overall, it's got a nice bouquet, but it's lacking in a little depth -- everything hits you all at once and doesn't develop past that. Drinking well right now, but I wouldn't hold for much longer.

Ultra smooth texture, with a comforting palate of cassis, gentle Christmas spices and low acidity. Lovely with a hearty prime rib dinner.

W korean spiced pork butt. Jenn, Billy, Rudy, Jenny. Was worried about the combination but it worked well. Nice midweight cab that has developed well. Good fruit and body. Good medium finish. Had next to the 2010 and 2011 all very similar, solid wines. My winner was the 2010.

Starts with a strong leather and Tobacco nose with subtle cherry and cranberry. Then the taste: cherry, caramel, cranberry almost jammy then it pulls itself back in, expressing rubust accidity.

Drinks much like a Napa cab, juicy red and black fruits, velvety tannins, full bodied and a shiney, opulent color. I think this wine has a few good years left in it- the wine when opened was still very fresh and vibrant; the color of the wine barely had any bricking on the edges. This one drinks a bit different than the other Marinus' of earlier years, more new world. That makes me a little sad...

This really impressed me. Deep, lifted nose. Black currant and cherry fruit show the perfect amount of ripeness. Notes of sandalwood, oak, and walnut shell join the fray. Full bodied, vibrant, and decadent in the mouth. Dark fruit richness and dusty, youthful tannin are countered by juicy, almost lip smacking acidity Gets darker, denser, and broodier in the glass. Long crushed rock finish. I'm sold.

Dark red in color, tart, red fruit, some slight smokiness and dusty flavors, softened tannins, fairly light in intensity and cigar tobacco on the finish. Hint of pencil lead early on in the flavor profile.

w venison stew. This came after the 99 Lewis Cab Reserve. Totally outclassed by the Lewis, because they are different wines, but this was good. Much more vanilla and sweet flavors, limited finish. No earth that i had expected. This will be good on stand alone basis.

This was my second, and last bottle. Not much of a nose - mostly a thin wave of alcohol heat coming through. Some elegant, old world bitter cherries on the palate. Not much tannic structure, with a thin mouthfeel. Tasted the way I remembered my last bottle, despite an additional several years of age. I can see some people like this wine, but not for me.

A woody aroma. Little bit of dark fruit as well. Taste follows the nose in sensing the wood before all else, without being astringent. Not too complex, medium finish and thoroughly enjoyable. Paired with French onion soup and baguette. Good combination.

Ruby red color with more aromas of cedar and dark cherries than my January tasting of plums. It is balanced, smooth and a little thin on the palate. the finish is medium but much more dry than previous bottles. This wine has matured and is ready to drink.

First glass was W thai food so not a very good but after the meal this wine was pretty good. Nice to have some age on it. Good color, nose not particularly special but on palate this is definitely closer to traditional claret vs california cab. Decent length of finish. Havent had any bernardus in long time because of qpr but this was pretty good at $23.

Deep Ruby red with rich plums, red cherries and spices. This bottle was a little flat and had a slight bitter tar taste on the finish. It was not as good as my last 2 bottles.

This was a decidedly flat bottle of wine. After the very enjoyable 2005 vintage, this wine did not ignite a spark anywhere. Gone were the 2005 notes of tobacco, sweet cassis, plum, and black cherry. Day 2 - The wine has opened up a bit with notes of leather and tobacco, plum and dark toast on the palate. The finish is still flat, but an improvement of two points for aroma and palate improvement. Day 2 - 87.

Ruby red color. Aromas of cedar, red cherry and a hint of menthol. Dry finish, with some lingering sweetness on the tongue. A nice wine, ready to consume.

Deep Ruby red with rich plums, red cherries and spices. It is balanced, very smooth and is a little light for a Bordeaux blend. It has a medium level of tannins and after taste. It drinks like a really good Washington State blend but much less expensive.

Sweet cherry and graphite on the nose. Cherry compote to taste with a medium long finish. Some pretty decent heat makes this a good food wine. Good QPR at 20.00. Would not pay more than 30.

This Bordeaux blend reminds me of the Eagles most recent tour, great stuff for less than $20. Maybe it's the economy or maybe it's over production (the Eagles should have stopped touring after 1 year), but take advantage of this opportunity to purchase very good wine for under $20. Goes well with a variety of food, but was very good with beef dishes. Moderate nose well balanced with a medium long finish.

Over the hill and fading fast. Very little character remaining.

2002 vintage

Still dark and youthful. On the nose, a faint hint of oak remains, with cherry fruit that is shaded by a moderate brettiness, a little alcohol, and an interesting raw lamb note. Similar palate, with smooth tannins growing through the shortish finish. This needed an hour in the glass to come around, and the overall package was very nice. Drink now or hold to see how this develops. Brought to L.May in Dubuque by Davesace.

Decanted 1 hour. Decent bordeaux style blend. Red fruit profile featuring dark cherry. Some notes of graphite and leather. The fruit was just a little on the sweet side for me. 20 second finish with moderate tannins. Decent value wine.

Medium to full body. Dark cherry with subtle earth. Decent acidity with dry tannins. Very Bordeaux like. Would pair well with a variety of meat dishes.
