30 minute decant. Impenetrable black-purple color. Nose shows dark cherry, chocolate, and baking spices. Lot going on in the paste, including blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, menthol, red bell pepper, and dried thyme and fresh bay leaf. Juniper appears on the medium length finish with fleshy black fruit, vanilla, soft thick tannins, and sweet oak. Peaking and singing tonight!

Absolutely singing right now - herbal notes, roasts, resolved tannins, but no rush. Wish I had more.

Ohh this is so good! So welcoming: soft, enveloping, deep and delicious. I was talking with a Sonoma vineyard owner/grower last week and he mentioned that the Syrah varietal isn't that popular, that it's a tough sale. I replied that in the hands of a talented winemaker (such as MTP), any varietal grape can satisfy. This is all the evidence I need to keep on seeking Syrah wine. Bedrock's T 'n' S and John Duval's Entity are what I consider …

Fantastic new world Syrah. Meaty and spicy nose. Palate is dense but with sweet black fruits with a bit of lift. Sandy tannins round out the finish. Terrific.

Decant and filter. This still needs air and is throwing some sediment. Absolutely gorgeous after it got some air. Black fruits, leather, tobacco and overall yumminess. A deep, round, beautiful Syrah.

Showed mature notes at first, leaves and molasses, but with a bit of time it’s mostly younger currant and blackberry notes with bright acidity, nicely balanced. In a good enjoyable spot, probably there for another five years or so.

Decanted for sediment and followed for 2 hours. The light tannins I mentioned in my note on our last bottle (12 years ago!) have resolved, leaving deep blue and black fruit with savory meat and olive notes. Drink up. Perfect pairing with Flannery lamb loin.

Last noted 3/13. First bottle corked; went & grabbed the last bottle. Color/App: nearly opaque ruby core -> moderately dense ruby rim with a bit of garnet creeping in. The wine was rocking after decanting for about 30 minutes. Black-fruited bouquet showing off tar, creosote, leather, a little gaminess and wet-slate minerality. Palate showed smoke, pretty much any black fruit you can name, anisette and tobacco. Great structure to drink now: the tannins are finally approachable and the acid level …

Vinetasters: Young Northern Rhône (Chicago, IL) : Served double blind. Dark fruit profile on the nose. Very sweet, and almost port-like, without the fortification and the residual sugar. The alcohol and firm tannins do stick out, and leave a pretty bitter finish. Comes across a bit over the top for me. My 12th, group's 10th.

Tar, bbq meat, smoke and clove notes. The tannins are well resolved, but this still seems younger than dozen or so years of age. Big, muscular and beefy. Seems like this would go great with grilled food.

Monday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL) : Served double blind. Plenty of syrah-inflected black fruit, with a burlier, chunkier texture on the palate. More black fruit than red, plenty of young tannins. Chewy and very young -- I thought this was a different vintage of the X-Block syrah alongside, even though it was pretty obvious that this was young new world syrah.

Forward plush wine, but the structure and austerity really grabs you on the finish. Mostly back fruits with hints of olive and strong white pepper note. Quite vibrant and fresh on the palate and yes it’s quite tannic, but fruit is still to the front. Length black fruited and spicy finish. Excellent CA Syrah.

I uncorked the bottle but did not decant about 8 hours before dinner, which was grilled pork ribeye chops, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. I was thinking about a 91 rating most of the way through the meal, but after 90 minutes it sang even more, bumping up the score to 92. Great balance of dark fruit, complexity, tannin, and finish. I'm so glad I have another bottle. :-) FWIW, I thought it was dark and savory, as a great Syrah …

Seems more like Zin than Syrah. Too light, too much fruit for what we want in a Syrah. Started improving a little after a few hours open, so maybe some serious aging will help.

Tasted over three days. Fruitier than North Rhone Syrah...and that is where the dissimilarities end. The blue and purple berry notes aside, the wine features intense savoriness (bacon), on the bouquet and palate, along with peppercorns, herbs, wintergreen, pipe tobacco, (coniferous forest) sous-bois, (sweet) umami, and tar. Tightly wound on the first day, aromatically charming on the second, and probably the most expansive on the third. Of the recent Bedrock wines tasted, this will likely be the longest lived, and …

My last bottle, pours inky purple-black. A big burly wine, full-bodies with a nice floral lift and tannins that are beginning to soften. Smokey black fruit nose with hints of anise and clove. Bigger and bolder than I go for these days but well made if a bit one-dimensional. In a prime drinking window I think.

Initially, was quite plush and fat on the palate—showing a surprisingly degree of fruity exuberance. A couple hour air and this firms up a bit, becoming more focused and showing a bit more tannin. Still, this is a forward fruity Syrah. Well balanced, no heat, and lovely pepper note throughout. Length finish. Quite nice, lots of potential here. This is drinking quite well, will be tough to hold but I suspect this will improve.

This surprised me, in a good way. While ripe dark berry fruit is present & there's a touch of vanilla in the midpalate, it's really herbs & a touch of game that is at the forefront of this wine. This was consistent across ~3 hours in the decanter. It is a little broad shouldered, but I think wears the California traits quite well.

This bottle is in a weird place. Seven years after my last bottle, this still has a lot of oak up front and bracing tannins on the back end. After Coravin'ing a glass, the first few sips were very disjointed, but with air this came together a bit. Somewhat reticent herbal nose shows notes of bay leaves, tapenade, sage, eucalyptus, cigar box and black fruits. A bit of stewed fruit on the midpalate suggests this bottle may not be pristine. …

Dark & meaty with mixed dark berries, bbq, dark florals & pepper. Integrating medium acid/tannins. Drinking well now though has the potential to evolve a few more years and should drink well through its 15th birthday.

Deep dark inky violet color with leather, roast meat, dark fruit, violet, and a bit of spice aromas. On the palate it medium-bodied, dense, fresh and harmonious with vibrant blackberries, plum, cassis, black cherry, and vanilla flavors. Long finish. The savory character of this wine reminds me of why I love Syrah! Bravo!
