Fusion of elegance and exuberance. Complex nose of forest floor, mineral, black and red fruit. Palate shows mature fruit, with expected 2001 structure. This is an intellectual wine to be pondered. Amazing with rack of lamb.

Mushroom Tasting Menu at Republique (Republique, Los Angeles) : Light ruby color. Nose is a bit muted initially and needs air to open up. Dark red fruit, spice, sous-bois and a slight green element on the nose and palate. Tannins are still a bit grippy, but the structure is impeccable. Very long finish. It still has years to go. Excellent.

Asador Paris Club Dinner (Asador Bastian - Chicago IL) : Small glass. Spiced red fruits, mostly mature with both sweet and savory spices. Complex with great depth on its finish. Ever-so-slightly better than a 2001 RSV tasted a few weeks ago. Very good now.

Compared with the 2000 Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg, this was tighter and more coiled, more tender, which is pretty normal for a 2001. The nose is exemplary - gorgeous.

nose - gorgeous, wild strawberry, black tea mouth - despite a bricked and somewhat faded color, this wine packed a wallop of concentrated racy strawberry fruit without showing any sign of heaviness. slightly burnt brown sugar on the smooth finish. oh so suave. A profound and memorable wine, and quite reminiscent of the '03 we had approx 6 months prior.

Red Burgundy GC 01 (London) : A corked bottle - such a shame, would have been so interesting to assess blind against DRC Riche 01 among others. A recent bottle of the HN was also really wonderful, so gutted.

Superb nose of lingering earl grey tea, cut herbs, game. Really haunting. On the palate also with lovely stuffing but appearing fully mature this was the split best red Burg of the night with Rousseau Ruchottes 02. A complete wine and one to get stuck into now. This certainly at peak and I would be pulling corks now-2025.

Dark fruit, meat, smoke, earth and some tea on the nose and palate. Fresh and lean. Very 2001. Quite youthful. Dusty tannin on the finish. Great right now.

Opening up at a glacial pace during dinner - great wine, excellent stuffing, but would wait a bit longer

RSV and Richebourg Dinner + Montrachet and La Tache (Holland Park, Singapore) : Wow. Best example of this I have had so far. What a superb Richebourg nose it had, with smoke and meat and earthy forest floor, then black cherries and plums, all laced with a wonderfully fragrant waft of exotic Vosne spice. Solid stuff. The palate was full of youthful vigour and power, with a punch of dark cherries and berries, and a lovely spine of minerality, all …

Burgundy and Barolo (Oficine Brera, Los Angeles) : Denser than RSV served beside it, garrigue and sage. This wine is more backward, more in need of time. But it's oh so serious. This reminds me of the '14 vintage, it has that classic style and is at the same time accessible and in need of time. I stayed with this for a couple of hours in the glass and it changed at a glacial pace. This is great juice that …

Another bottle of this elegant, lovely Grand Cru Burgundy. Similar thoughts to my note from earlier in the year. Red and black cherries, some raspberries, preserved red plums, dried herbs, earth, sous bois and some baking spices. Refined with fine tannins. Medium bodied only but with enough fruit weight and gravitas for this level. Beautiful, racy precise acidity. Quite long. All class. Now on its drinking plateau but no immediate hurry needed, I would think.

Dinner for Blair Walter at Noble Rot (Noble Rot, Wellington, NZ) : A more evolved colour, with a little ochre bricking at the rim. A lovely wine. Red and black cherries, minerals, gentle spices, dried herbs and earth, with a floral top note. On palate, classy, well structured, with some attractive secondary development. More red fruited than the 2003. Red cherries, raspberries, dry brushwood and sous bois. Well integrated, ultra-fine grained, spherical tannins. Sparkling acidity, precise and driven. This bottle …

Richebourg Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore) : This performed really well in spite of being paired against a monumental 2001 DRC Richebourg. In fact, it was probably the best of the 3 bottles of the same wine I have had so far, somehow showing as the most advanced and ready of the trio of Hudelot-Noellat Richebourgs on the night (the 1999 and 1998 being the other two). If anything, I felt it had a richer, warmer, more easily gregarious and …

2001 Vosne-Romane Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Teochew, Takashimaya) : I love Hudelot Noellats subtle, elegant style. Tonight, a lesser wine would have suffered from being served next to the lusher, more immediately welcoming 2001 Anne Gros Richebourg, but this stood its ground, showing entirely wonderfully in its own inimitable way. What a lovely nose we had here, with motes of spice, earth and stony mineral laced together with dark cherries, powdered herbs and a whiff of dried flowers. The …

2001 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel) : This is one of the only wines on the night that was really rather too young to drink. It did have a lovely, rather open nose, with a some meatiness, a whiff of sous bois and little bits of smoky herbs and spice hovering around fragrant dark fruit and blueberry notes. I liked that bouquet with its little smoky character. The palate had a very youthful feel to it. …

Just need to smell the aromatics of this to know it is great wine. One of those where the last sip is the best and another few hours sitting on a glass would have helped further delve into the complexity of it. Rather reticent on opening, dry and detailed in the black fruit spectrum but not overripe or in the least flabby, still primary. Middle palate quiet lean but a style I rather like and over a few hours it …
