Campillo, Gran Reserva, Rioja

Tasting mostly oak, the (overripe) fruit is pushed to the background aggressively. No acidity or tannin at all so really out of balance. Overripe and one-dimensional. Don't recommend.

Medium garnet colour showing some signs of age at the rim. Medium intensity on the nose with dark fruit, spices, vanilla and smoke. Medium intensity on the palate where some red fruit come through with medium acidity, medium chalky tannins, medium finish. Took a while to open up. At first nose was very muted. After decanting for a while, the wine opened up well. Perfectly enjoyable wine but no exceptional depth or complexity.

Punchy powerful nose of full, firm, fig and dates - tightly bound in leafy tea and tobacco. Exciting, old school, and surprisingly dry. "Kidney" coloured with toasty oak notes ant a hint of nutmeg - balanced brilliantly by a healthy bitterness, and just a hint of brine. A surprisingly grippy and pleasantly pebbly finish of demerara sugar that just tickles the tongue! Aged leather? Cinnamon? Sandalwood? I could go on! Purchased from majestic not expensive give the age and it did not disappoint. Deep ruby colour. Toasted notes on the nose and rich and deep on the palate. Went better with slightly spicy tapas. Great

Dark red, no hint of age. Dark cherry and vanilla nose. The palate is much the same with good concentration and sap. Savoury-tobacco, soya sauce, roasted meat. This might live forever!

Campillo Vertical tasting (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid) : Initial nose of fuel. It didn't really open at all. Sightly aromas of leather or banana and little more. Undetectable Graciano. Elegant performance on the palate and quite softie by contrast. Nariz inicial a gasoleo. No termina de abrir. Quizás sutilmente a cuero o banana y poco más. Indetectable Graciano. La boca es elegante y suave por contraste.

Deep red Coconut, ripe dark fruit, very oaky, ripe and high in alc. Concentrated dark fruit flavours and a mid weight dry finish. Not for me.

Wine Education Service - Rioja - Gran Reservas (Imperial College) : Lacking age, dense. Delicate restrained nose, fruity, floral and very complex. A fantastic wine, quite tannic but soft, concentrated fruit (but not over-concentrated), silky and exceedingly long.

Wine Education Service - Mature Rioja (LSE) : Fruity and very attractive nose. Fruity, spicy, a bit tannic (soft tannins), NEEDS DECANTING, quite concentrated, soft mid palate, quite long, keep 2 - 10 years.

Dark red, beautiful look. Good red fruit, menthol nose. Full mouthfeel, tannic red fruit, little sour, good length.
