As if it wasn’t enough to experience three separate vintages of Noël Verset; I now get to follow it up with Thiérry Allemand’s Sans Soufre! Dinner with the St. Louis Crowd et al. (St. Louis, MO) : The nose here is all smoke and smoked meat but at the same time there is a sweetness from the black raspberries. Very clean, this doesn't have any barnyard or funky aromas. This actually feels a little younger than 2001 as well, what with its primary fruit and all. Dinner with Ravenau, Leflaive, Muller, Fourrier, Pichler, Montrose, Fourrier, de Fargues and more (Black Salt, Washington DC) : At fifteen years of age this wine is still quite dark in color and exhibiting quite a bit of glossy, sweet, fruit. The fruit reminds me of ripe blackberries. The purity and concentration of the flavors is striking. I would say this is bordering on modern but it never feels heavy or overdone.

Just like the 2001 Chaillot, this is over oaked. Getting new barrels that particular year really screwed up the wines in my mind. I took no pleasure at all drinking this 01 Sans Soufre and Thierry is one of my favorite producer ever. I could just not go past the strong oaky profile.

Much better than my last bottle. Powerfully aromatic and very exotic with bright floral, savoury and higher-toned spicy elements combining into an amazing scent. There's wonderful finesse here, a remarkable freshness to the fruit and striking purity and length to the flavours.

Very nice; black olives tinged with meaty, peppery and more high toned notes, but it seems rather reticent. After a couple of hours there's more aromatic depth and fruit, but it's not particularly exciting and well below expectations for this.

Various Wines @ Salil's (Vernon, CT) : Served a bit on the chilly side at first. Very youthful color. Overall, this came across as shut down and ungiving; really coiled up. Some tar and black fruit hints are detectable if you really look for it, but this needs time. Not rated.

This bottle showed very little typicity, some high toned/VA aromas, lovely structure, but little tonight that identified this as Cornas. It seemed more about carbonic maceration then N RHone syrah.

Intensely floral nose at first with gardenia or something tropical. I haven't smelled this in syrah without viognier before. With air more typical Cornas aromas of black pepper, a little tar, black olive. Nothing funky or reduced, though. No noticeable oak. I had read somewhere that there was higher proportion of new barrels at Allemand in the 2001 vintage, as he was replacing some older barrels, but this didn't show up in this bottle at all. Bellingham Grand Crew Celebrates a Birthday (DuJour Bistro) : Thanks to Marc for this thrilling wine. I would never have thought a Cornas could be a contender for WOTN in the midst of other legends. It was a wild ride! Intense tropical floral and mineral nose. Gardenias, violets, and the biggest baddest black fruit palate of the night. Later, intense black pepper and subtle olive notes arose. Stunning.

Dinner with the fellahs: Muscadet, Vouvray, Cornas, St. Joseph and Primitivo. (My place.) : Nothing on the label that designates that this is a sans soufre bottling, you just have to know. You may need to know the secret handshake to get this, too. Always a little risky cellaring a sans soufre bottling, but this is showing brilliantly. My first experience with this wine, althought I love this producer. Decanted for about an hour. A nose that was like nothing I've ever had before. Almost like a mens cologne or musk. Strangely alluring. hints of black olives and rosemary. On the palate the wine is very big and maybe a touch oily but super fine tannins.
