Chateau Pegau, Maclura, Cotes du Rhone

This is my second opening of 6 purchased. This is simply a darn good drink. Having tonight with leftover leg of lamb (I know, yuck), but darn the gas grilled Easter leg was great the first time and...), oh, the wine. First time around it was a Caymus 2000 cab. Superb. So I thought I'd try something a little more down stream for leftovers. All good.

Woof. This was 11 EUR from Pegau themselves but feels more like 5 EUR ant Lidl. Brutish, woody nose with very thin, green palate. Has the slight barnyard notes of a natural wine with none of the charm.

Lovely earthy Syrah nose. Initially a bit flat but really opened up after 30 minutes. Big and luscious fruit with nice tannins and chalk. Good from front to back.

A big wine and worked great on a cold night. Classic CDR flavors with dark fruit, garrigue and some smokiness. Medium plus body and nice finish. Would buy more 4.0

Very big, and it needs some serious time to open. It's got a variety of juicy and dark fruits throughout, ending with dark, tart flavors. I'd love to try pairing this with a dish with a sauce that has some fruit bits notes to it, possibly duck.

Wonderful aromatics on the nose including spice and leather, dark fruit on the palette, deep cherry with accents of cocoa and dark chocolate. Second bottle experience was more developed than the first.

Quite a good CDR. Smoke and stewed raspberries and blueberries up front. Nose has some black pepper too. On the palate, a little jammy with some fig/date and chewy tannin - more than I was expecting but very welcome. Acid is a little aggressive, which is my only (very small) complaint. Intense on the palate and aromatically; good concentration. Would buy again at $21.

A pretty gutsy Côtes du Rhône with lots of soft stuffing and dried fig, made in the old-fashioned style. I would guess fermented in concrete and aged in large, old wood casks. Not your wimpy Côtes du Rhône. Good value.

It’s a big wine. Suspect it could benefit from being cellared but certainly drinkable now. Review after it’s been open for 3 hrs (with sipping along the way) Appearance - clear, opaque, ruby leaning more purple than red. Nose - clean, youthful, intensity is medium plus. Primary notes. Dark berries, dried herbs, old newsprint, and iron on the nose. The palate has a sort of fleshy texture, with some blackberries, acid that keeps it balanced and there’s some structure here. Definitely a bit of a rustic quality but there’s some serious quality here, and I think it’s a nice value. It’s not a CdR that feels by the numbers, has some nice specificity.

Nice value, with lots of Rhone character. Strawberry, plums and peppery meats. Good density and balance. Needed a bit of decanting to smooth out the structure.

French road trip, mainly Rhône valley; 9/4/2022-9/18/2022 : From open 75cl at Domaine Pegau tasting room, Châteauneuf du Pape. No oak treatment. Gorgeous scent of super-ripe blackcurrant and roasting meat; full-bodied, tannic entry; massive tannic gain into the stern, furry mid-palate, the declared 14,5% alc. well integrated; dry, slightly roasted finish. Attractive in a tough-love kind of way already, should be very enjoyable in 2023-25. Good value at only 10 EUR cellar door. 88P

It was good. It took about 5-6 hours to open up in the decanter. It should age a few more years, but drinkabale now.

This was pretty good. Nicely balanced, and not a big fruit bomb. I like how this seems more restrained and less concentrated than Beaucastel’s Coudoulet. I’d consider buying a few of these to have around for summer BBQ’s if I came across them.

Very good example of a CDR: nothing complex, but nice fruit on the nose and palate with that distinctive CDR nose and taste (must? not sure what it is but easy to recognize). Perfect with baked chicken.

This was a good bottle, better than the last one. This is a fairly priced Cotes du Rhone table wine, IMO. It's a good product to have a few around for anything that matches well with a Southern Rhone red. It doesn't have remarkable flavors, but this bottle had a nice balance and enough intrigue to make it interesting. Good vintage, too. It probably could have rested a few more years.

(Decanted for one hour) Opens up very nicely on the nose showing violets and red berries with an incipient maturity with extended time in the glass. Nice and fruitful on the palate with a still youthful structure showing tannins and some herbal bitterness on the finish. Nice balance of fruit and tannins and has evolved well with the extra cellar time. (Best 2021-2031)

Wonderful garrigue and fairly smooth for a CDR. A baby CDP, more substantial than the Guigal. I really don't understand the 69 and 75 below but I didn't change my score as a result.

Briefly, decanted and drank straight away. This is pleasant but simple and somewhat thin CDR. Far from the best I have had from this vintage and not great QPR at over US$20.

Tasted 2 fairly large Coravin pours. Opaque dark garnet color. Nose has mostly dark black fruit, light florals and game meat scents that is very attractive but not effusive. This is one of the better CDRs that I’ve had lately. The wine has good structure and acidity to balance the ripe black and blue berry fruit along with dried herbs providing interest through the finish.
