This bottle came off the shelf of a local Rite Aid at 50% off. 2011... I'll try not to be biased against this one. Color is black garnet and quite clear. 5 Nose has so much tobacco and dust after 3 hours in the decanter with just a bit of pyrazine, olive oil, black fruit and heat. Nose of fresh perfectly ripe berries. Deep dark burgundy color. Velvety mouth feel up front, in middle and on long finish. Fore flavors of dark sweet cherries and hardened brambles. Well integrated oak. This wine was ready to drink yet maintained youthful fruit. Tannins were refined and elegant. Went well with Dave's steaks and Gethsemani's fudge.

In the mid-70's, I had a colleague with a nice collection of BV's, including the 1968 and 1970 B.V. Private Reserve that were exceptional wines and for me, represented the California Cabernet benchmark. I was fortunate to acquire the 1974 and especially the 1976 but they have long been consumed. I moved on to a greater focus on Bordeaux, Rioja's, and Ribera del Duero, but always thought of the BV's with some affection and have hoped that B.V. would resurrect …

Interesting Bordeaux blend. A little bit on the poky side....not the best balance....but still pretty good. I think it would benefit from a few more years in the bottle. The Cab Franc comes out quite a bit and I think that might be my issue...is there Cab Franc in this? I'm too lazy to get up and check the label.

Didn't stand up well to lamb loin chops. It was okay and did keep hinting at a whisper of dusty Rutherford qualities, but the fruit wasn't quite there and neither was the earth. A bit flat. Napa just can't deliver at this price point.

Pleasant sipping wine with plenty of fruit and absolutely no structure whatsoever, with a relatively short finish. Tasted the day after the four-times-as-expensive Rutherford Cab by the same producer, which as far as I can tell was just as unstructured, with no finish to speak of, but the difference was that the Rutherford Cab's fruit was smothered in way too much oak, and the wine was trying to be something it clearly wasn't. Impressive for its QPR some vintages, this proved to be worth the cost but lacked compared with a Bordeaux enjoyed the same evening. Red-fruit, tobacco, anise, vanilla. Nice mouthfeel and acidity but oddly structured. A bit "watery," and not much of a star or finish-more of a mole-hill of concentrated fruit and spice. Simple but enjoyed most with Prime NY steaks..
