Grace Family, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Drank the rest of the btl from a week ago. What a difference clean clear and dark fruit. Soft on the palate, with some weight. Good finish with that sweetness on the finish.

Historic bottle since my dad helped pick the grapes. Older color, good nose, medium palate. Past it's prime and has seen better days but was a nice memory of the day he picked the grapes. Thank you, Dick Grace!

Took an hour to come around after being decanted. Initially had some prune and sour/barnyard odors and flavors that disappeared with air.

With some black licorice spice and savory notes. Mineral and very long. Palate is still fresh.

Pop and pour. Cork was 80% stained. Fruit is almost completely gone but wine was not gone. Tertiary characteristics were there and this is still drinkable.

Garnet to brick at the rim. Raisins and cherries with some saddle leather. Starting to dry out and needed to be drunk younger.

Cork was difficult to remove; not unexpected. Tasted then decanted. I was struck at how dark to the rim this wine was at 27 years of age. Most of the fruit was gone, but this still had very good secondary flavors. This magnum held together and improved slightly as we consumed. A great experience for many of our friends who had never enjoyed a wine of this age from California

Pretty good showing after 26 years. PnP. Nice Bordeaux qualities, but none of the complexity you'd get with a Bordeaux of this vintage. Sitting in perfect conditions in a friend's cellar direct from the winery, so as good as you'll get storage-wise. Well past prime and heading South. Drink.

Btl was not in the best condition. Have had this wine several times even out of magnum. Needed time to breath but just Ok. The key was my dad helped pick the grapes.

2 hour decant. Garnet to brick at the rim. Fully mature with cassis, tobacco, and pronounced leather. Medium finish. Nice but not all that complex.

1988 vintage

Bottle bought at auction - good fill, cork broke in 2 on opening. Immediately had that aroma of tea. Deliciously sweet. Reminds me of a 1975 or '78 left bank classed Bordeaux with the sense of sweet tea and mild hints of tobacco. Well balanced and while I don't see this getting any better its decline is not imminent. Not sure I would pay over $200 for this, but I am enjoying it.

Pop and pour, which seemd like the thing to do given the age of the wine. Mid garnet and fully mature. The tannins have all resolved, leaving elegant plum and cassis fruit with a bit of leather. Still drinking well but it is in decline so I wouldn't wait.

Most of the fruit had moved to the big ranch in the sky. Some tart red cherries were all that was left.

Blind Tasting 1980-87 Ridge Geyservilles (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA) : Deep ruby, youthful color. Plum on the nose, slightly stewed. Light to medium bodied with medium acidity. Tart plum, tobacco, fading a bit, but still quite nice.

Very youthful fresh exciting. Great nose lengthy finish and soft tannins. It has aged wonderfully. Cork wa in incredible shape.. amazing. Very little sediment.

Drinking very well for an older Cailfornia. I was under the impression Napa Cabs won't age so well. This wine has changed my perception. Good levels of fruit, soft mellow tannins and a nose so aromatic of dried rasins. Great wine.

Single-Blind Napa Valley Cult Wines (Tribeca Grill) : Smells like cured meats. On the palate, it comes across rich but simple with a raisined Amarone-like personality. The finish is hot and tinged green but it carries enough lingering flavor not to ring hollow. Nobody guessed this was the 1988. Later in the evening, it tasted much smoother but still could have passed convincingly for a recent release.

Grace Cabernet Sauvignon (Walnut Creek, Ca.) : Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. Barrel sample that sported a handwritten label that said drawn 10/2/1990, very young fruit on the nose with lots of barrel sample odors plus a little French barnyard, great cherry fruit on the palate with very young, rich fruit, well balanced, long finish and great cabernet flavors, not unlike the 1985 Chateau Montelena barrel sample of 3 years ago. My #1.

Grace Cabernet Sauvignon (Walnut Creek, Ca.) : Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. this was the first vintage with the Dick Grace label, 3.5 years in Limousin Oak barrels, typical Grace nose, rich fruit and terrific bottle bouquet plus hints of more wood than the older wines, concentrated medium fruit plus lots of mouth coating tannins in the mouth, finish is long but average flavors when compared to the other wines tonight. My #6.
