Domaine Denis Mortet 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques: Dark ruby red. Red fruit on nose with some intensity and oak present but encompassed by fruit. Intensity, concentration and well balanced acidity but average complexity. Maturing but still remarkably fresh and minimal evolution. Smooth and satisfying!

Super seductive, expressive and sexy, with darker fruit notes, some smoke, sweet spices, also some flowery notes and some animalic undertone. Overall just so much pleasure to drink. It‘s medium-full bodied, with medium+ tannin and medium+ acidity. Excellent length. A super perfumed, sexy and elegant Lavaux. Wow.. I really like this. (94+)

Dark cerise. On opening a heady whiff of Gevrey, delicious animale, then muted for an hour, subsequently kaleidoscopic, pungent limestone mineralite, dark cherry fruit, hints of confection, spice. Served blind. A beautiful and expressive nose with nicely balanced fruit and earthy notes, (too) plenty of toasted oak on the palate for my taste, good length. Was surprised to see the 2009 vintage as it was less forward than most of the 09 I have had, and the fairly heavy toast made me think of a weaker vintage that was pushed a bit too hard.

Medium garnet. Expressive nose of red fruit, lots of toasty notes, animalic elements as well, warm vintage visible but very good complexity. Really silky mouth feel, good palate presence and aromatic finish. I loved this wine very much despite the warmth of the vintage as the Gevrey terroir still came through and the freshness was there.

Really a great wine. This is so perfumed on the nose, both earthy and dark notes but also some floral and spice. There is no heaviness from the vintage, although you can detect the full maturity of the fruit on the palate. Second favourite wine on show today. Really approachable. Beautiful nose. Very fragrant and elegant. Perfumed. A real elegance to the wine. Certainly benefitting from the reduced amount of oak now being used. Interestingly, some stems were added back in for fermentation in 2009 vintage.

Haut-Brion dinner : Even of the successor of Denis is less heavy in the oak, this is STILL heavy on the oak and the obvious vintage does not help; this is quite open, very rich, loads of pinot here, a plentiful wine, that will probably merit a higher score, if given time to settle down

Burgundy Dinner (Rock Pool Bar and Grill) : Medium plus aromas of slight yeast extract, leather, toast, cream, coffee, red and black berry, slight spice, meaty notes and plenty of very expensive new oak. In the mouth the wine has flavours of coffee, chocolate black fruit, cream, spice. It's juicy, long and with some alcohol warmth intruding on the finish. Not as well-balanced as the 2010 but still very good indeed.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL) : Tasted double blind. Incredibly ripe black fruit on nose with anise, rosemary and tarragon. Palate shows lots of baby fat and fairly prominent new oak today, but truly pristine and great overall raw materials. Long, lush, powerful finish is slightly exotic, very exciting. Give this plenty of time.

From memory. Pretty modern in style, not shy on the oak, but less so than wines of the past that were made by Denis himself. Explosive nose of sweet red and black fruit, toasty oak and damp forest floor. Ripe and rich on the palate with oak coming through on the finish with sweet tannin and good acidity. Very approachable now, but will only get better as it integrates and takes on secondary notes.
