This wine may not have all the complexities of its youth, but at 20 years it still maintains some grip and structure. Aromas and flavors of old leather were predominant. Surprisingly quite pleasant though past it’s prime

Had 2 bottles of varying quality - certainly not in its prime, but still enjoyable nonetheless!

My 3rd note on this wine in 6 years. 2 hour decant. Light bricking on the rim, Opaque dark red through the core with a touch haziness. Aromas are moderate+ in intensity, beautifully complex letting aromas of old leather, old wood, tobacco, dried cherries, dried porcini mushrooms, herbs (particularly rosemary, sage and thyme), currants, dust, mineral, pencil shavings and a definitive forest floor note. The palate shows this wine is still drinking well to say the least. Acidity is medium-plus …

The 2002 Marques de Riscal Reserva is still enjoyable but at the end of its prime. It has a deep garnet colour and fairly fragrant aromas of lead pencil, damp earth and some mild notes of fig and prune. It is medium bodied with a soft texture and has developed some interesting secondary flavours of old leather chair and - somewhat excessive - vegetal notes. The finish is medium and the fruit starting to fade as this tannic, now angular …

Drink with a pancetta and broad bean risotto, decanted for 1 hour. Delicate and old and needs drunk but it suited the risotto beautifully.

Showing signs of being a little too old. SLight oxidative notes. STill plenty of fruit though and overall a pleasant tempranillo.

Dark berries and gripping tannins with some allspice. Not a lot of depth of flavor - that's really the only "fault" I can find. The fruit, though never completely hidden, really showed itself beset on day 2. The bottle lasted four days and oxidation wasn't noticeable. Great value.

Light ruby with some clear browning edges - beautiful colour. This has become an outstanding wine with a unique complex bouquet and palate. The dominant flavours are burnt caramel and red berries. Well made - I can't believe how much this wine improved with a couple years of extra bottle age. Wish I had bought more.

Brick red core fading to an orange brown rim, showing its time sent in the cellar. (my first note on this wine 7/2009) high viscosity and day bright with slight sediment. the aromas remain strong and clean with dried currant, complex coffee, pipe tobacco and wild herb notes with a pleasant nuance of wood. I find this wine still surprisingly alive with fresh acidity and soft, very elegant tannins that may have faded slightly, but still present and enjoyable. Flavors …

Garnet fading to brown. Lots on the nose (leather, tobacco, meatiness, spice, white pepper all over red fruit - plum, strawberry and red cherry) - including brett signs. Not a bad thing for me, I don't mind a bit of dirtiness in my wine (unfashionable though it may be). Good acid and drying, dusty tannin and a medium long finish which gives me a certain doubt about it's ability to show anything else with age. Having said that I think …

Classic Rioja that really stood the test of moderate cellar time. Very earthy, coffee like aromas, blanced with a very pleasant, integrated black cherry fruit taste.

I'd say this is a notch lower on everything compared to the 2001 vintage. But it's still all there - structure, balance, complexity. Still a great value wine. It has a dark cherry core with hints of tobacco, espresso, and spice. Fantastic food wine. Great with callos, bacallao, and steaks. Drink now until 2017.

Air, air, air! - A pour through the Vinturi + 20 minutes in the decanter was not enough. Give it an hour or so and it will really open up, very much enjoyed this (especially for the price), although I also still prefer the 2001.

Impressively good given the quality of the vintage. Garnet colour. Coffee, smoke, charcoal, sweet red fruits. Mid+ bodied, nicely balanced and structured with soft tanins, good fruit and balancing acidity. Long finish. A very well made, fairly proced wine.

classic Rioja with plenty of oak. I like this style but more fruit presence to go with the oak would have been a plus. The vanilla on the nose and the oakiness at the beginning and end of the taste give this a pronounced character. The cherry fruit flavors also seemed to be balanced with a healthy dose of acidity, which kept things more in balance. I enjoyed this and look forward to the '01 Gran Reserva.

50+4+12+15+7 Nose of restrained oak, sour cherry and red berry with an astringent mouthfeel. Tannins heavy but farily well integrated. Tasted by itself, would have shown better if paired with food. Probably needs a little more time.

While non-offensive, we found to be a bit boring. Probably would be a great sub $20 for a dinner party involving rich beef dishes, but for a more intimate setting where wine is the focus would not suggest.

A dark-cherry colored wine with the brick-red hues that come from its evolution in the cask and bottle. A very intense, highly expressive nose. You can detect complex aromas of tobacco, mountain herbs, balsamic nuances and coffee over an underlying slightly toasted base obtained from lengthy ageing in the wood. On the palate it is surprisingly lively, with its excellent acidity giving it a light, fresh mouthfeel with toasted nuances beneath the tongue. Soft, elegant tannins that have become virtually …

Popped and poured. Not only did this take awhile to open up (should have decanted, I suppose) but its flavors dissipated quite quickly. In that narrow window, it was pretty nice: A classic Rioja nose of berry fruit, vanilla and burnt cedar with maybe a hint of herbs thrown in. A soft, even luscious palate followed.
