Domaine Leon Barral, Jadis, Faugeres

One of the biggest surprises this year so far. Full confirmation of the barnyard/elephant dunk in the beginning. This more or less disappears after 1h. Then, the wine displays a lot of tension, high acidity frank fruit notes, loads of warmer garrigues notes and, for some time, quite some petrol notes. All this comes together nicely over time and provides a very expressive wine and an excellent food companion.

Wow, this has held up really well, especially for a producer on the natural end of the spectrum. Unmistakably from the south of France. Very wild, tons of garrique. Very balanced despite the 14.5%. However, there’s a pretty strong streak of VA that keeps me from enjoying it. Probably not a sign anything is off, but not to my taste.

This is surely one of my all time favorite reds. Packed with flavor, powerful and smooth, savory and beefy, all in a friendly and good way. It's surprisingly easy to down a bottle, even at it's 14.5% alcohol. Dark red ripe fruit, bay leaf, olive, very delicious. Absolutely at it's peak now. Had this with a nice big juicy ribeye from the BBQ. Heaven!

The two sibling wines, the Valinieres and Jadis, express such different yet rich sides of the new Languedoc quality/organic turnaround. The more complex older sibling is brooding, mushroom and barnyard Mourvèdre-led, while the Jadis is expressive while young, fresh with grenache-leading flavors that are sweeter. higher-toned and a bit more exuberant. As close as tasting the soil as a wine can come. An absolutely delightful explosion of flavor from the Rhone but in the Languedoc— organic, rich, old vines. Unlike the more sophisticated,richer but less youthful Barral Faugeres Valinieres, the Jadis delivers the Grenache sweet cherry, plum,blackberry compote in a robe of viscous, briary liquid. Dark dark purple and red with a finish that lingers. Try the Valinieres as well for a Mourvèdre-led mushroom melange.

No formal note. Full bodied indeed, and backward. Plenty of grip after 7 years would suggest that it needs to cellar for 15-20 years, so consider revisiting around 2025. There were a lot of edges still that need the burnishing of time. It will remain a rustic styled wine however. Hold to 2025+

Cellared in a rather good cellar and thus still in perfect condition. An abundance of impressions are flowing from the glass. There is Syrah, there is Carignan and there is wildness in this wine. It is however well-kept and an extremely interesting glass. It is so interesting that a wine can be so much and at the same time appear airy, elegant, perfumed and light. Very fresh and lively - some people guessed 2008 and even 2014.

Just fabulous! Bursting with caleidoscopic aromas lifted by its volatility. Lilacs, lavender, garrigue, scorched earth, ripe black cherries, forest strawberries, mulberries, red apples, roast beef, walnuts, leather, tobacco, salmiak, spice... you name it. Perfumed, unctuous, and lively. It reveals massive substance with air. Brett also makes its presence known, though not over-the-top. Still showing very young with minimal bricking. It should evolve for another five to seven years.

Lost and found in the back of my cellar... This Rhône-blend from the Languedoc is holding up, but its age is starting to show. Cigars, sweet tobacco, dried cherry and spice, dusty mouthfeel. Balance still pretty good, though its becoming more fragile compared to the presentation 5 years ago.

Bright garnet with fading pinkish rim. Nose of ripe blackberry and plums, raw meat, animale. Intense dark fruit palate, with significant greenness and faded tannins. The finish is long and reiterates the palate, tart then fruit then green. Although I am not much of a fan of the intense greenness, this variety is more leafy than vegetal, with a bitter tilt. Settled down a bit with air, complemented grilled sirloin quite well.

Wines from this region are unique. Most are not serious...but this one is. The structure is very good. The taste profile is undeniably Roussillon, ripe, fruity, fresh, with some sort of fresh crushed stone 'thing', or graphite, and a strong evergreen forest / garrigue component. This was delicious last night. The aromas have a mix of garrigue, crushed wet stones, blackberry, black olive and a little smoke. The mouth feel is pleasant, good acidity, medium body, some sweetness of black fruit (although the wine is dry) and no noticeable effects from the 14% abv. Had a glass of this last night, smokey, peppery syrah smells on first whiff. A little bit of mature things like leather too. Some kirschy grenache flavors in the mouth. Structure is integrated nicely, there's plenty of tannin and acidity but all working nicely together. Very pleasant, very easy to drink. edit to add: drinking great on day two, lots of roasted herbs tonight, with the fruit in the background. Really good.

Magnum. Visually not much sign of its age. I always like the nose of the Jadis: garrigue and some bloody steak. My wife slightly uncharitably describes it as "fusty". More tannic than I remember the previous bottle and maybe the fruit has receded a bit. No hurry to drink up the remaining bottles though.

This hangs on better than previous bottles: the bright red fruit where the dark carignan note doesn't overpower; stays bright wild and complex through the palate with a decent medium+ finish.

Spices and tannins still potent but dark fruits are flatter and less showy now than a few months ago. Sauvage.

Clear mahogany in the glass, nose of funky plums. Surprisingly bright on the palate, almost minty proper syrah spice, ripe and racy red fruit yielding to balancing tang and surprisingly (to me) light tannins. Light acid finish with lots of those funky plums. This wine was of fruitier and fresher style than I expected, but genuinely enjoyable (with homemade hamburgers). Perhaps another year or three in the cellar would thoroughly mature this wine, still many would prefer it today.

This (2nd) bottle repeats the profile of the 1st; it's defined by its finish: a medium+ length, chalky (mental image is un-sedimented grape must) with a flat or off-tone old oak note dominating the earlier funky dark fruit mid-palate and nose. I loved the 2001 and the 2002 was lovely last year: this just doesn't taste well made in comparison

Wide open nose. Exciting... apetizing... complex... special... in fact, truly original! Here you find deep, fresh forest berry aromas, even cranberries and briar. You also get musty, funky, gamey animal smells with notes of tar, shoe polish, rubber, coffee pastille and spice. Finally herbs: rosemary and more from the garrigue. The taste is in admirable balance with the nose. Nice freshness of the acids pairs with rounded liquorice and herbal character. The minerals are also definitely in the right directory …

Once the wine opened up after at least 20 minutes, it became more focused. Dark inky red color. Nose of cherries, cranberries and just a hint of coffee or chocolate. Fruit forward and lush syrah flavor to start, then resolving into a complex, spicy, dusty long finish. Really delicious stuff.

Agree with other note though I would say the wine has significant concentration. Initially a bit too much funk, but that blew off and what remained was a really intriguing old world nose. Got better and better with air.

It's a wilful cliché: this wine is too much for words, but never I came across a wine that approached it so effortlessly. Gutsy, fresh, sappy, crisp, fleshy fruit. Very fine tannins combining elegance and power in a graceful way. Complex, layered and at the same slender, female in style. A great wine with still lots of potential.

Light to medium bodied, not showing much fat or concentration. This is all about wonderful aromas and flavors - meaty, rich garrigue, with elegant grenache fruit dominating. Finishes with a dusting of fine tannins. Very nicely balanced, this bottle went down easily.

We decanted this bottle for about an hour. Damp forest, mineral and oak gives way to loads of fruit in the middle with a nice tannin finish. Nice acidity brings together good spices and texture. Very long, nice finish. Good value.
