Dinner at D Cuisine (Chicago, IL) : To be honest, somewhat disappointing given the site on the label. It's a perfectly solid bottle of pinot, but it's missing the oomph to bring it to the next level. A mix of red and black fruit with firm tannins; missing the complexity and layers I expect from a grand cru.

Drank without food after 2 hours of air in the glass. Great spiced nose w/ a hint of charcuterie. More elegant all-around than most of the other Gevreys that I've experienced (this is my first CdB). Reading other notes about black fruits, they're still in the background, but balanced with some redcurrant/raspberries. Worth seeking this out. Dark red, raspberry and earth-inflected fruits. Medium-bodied, and maybe a bit front-heavy and angular, but reasonably giving at this stage. Finishes a bit coarse and more rustic, but overall very enjoyable.

In a beautiful place right now. Opened for about 45min and it's truly singing. The nose opens up to fresh lavender and blackberry fruit. The taste has wonderful cocoa with caramel and deep red currants. Slight hint of green vegetable but the fruit is heavy. I suggest this wine will live effortlessly for another 15yrs. It will be in its full wheel house in 5-7 but very enjoyable today.

Lighter in body than the Charmes-Chambertin, with black fruits and prominent spice. This wine will obviously benefit from a few more years of cellaring, but I must admit that I much preferred the Charmes-Chambertin from this vintage and producer.

Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL) : Tasting, brief note. Intense and meaty black fruit aromas and flavors with some background spice. Very fresh and balanced for the vintage. Ever-so-slightly better than the also wonderful Champy '06 Mazis-Chambertin just tasted.

Maison Champy Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL) : Dense black fruit aromas with modest spice. Same blackberry and black cherry flavors with fairly firm structure. This still needs at least 5 more years in the cellar. I took home the bottle with one glass left and finished it the following night, when it was more accessible and balanced.

Knightsbridge Holiday Burgundy Sale (Northbrook, IL) : Fortunately this was open for quite a while before I tried it because there was still a touch of sulfur coming through on the nose. Ripe mostly black fruit is very good, however wine is highly structured for now, with great power coming through on finish. Would have liked a bit more spice.

Grand Burgundy Tasting (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)) : Huge super funk driven nose. One of the more bold wines tasted. Love the Champy house style of its Grand Crus. Excellent Corton Charlemagne as well.

A beautiful, very aromatic nose. Baked cherries with spices. Floral and rose notes. Forest floor and earthiness. Cherry liqueur. A very complex nose. Elegant and complex on the palate. Upfront cherry backed by vanilla. Young tannins and acid, but well balanced. Incredibly long finish of spicy cherry and mineral. Awesome wine. Two words sum up this wine, even though it is so young: Balance & Harmony.

Knightsbridge Burgundy Tasting (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (IL)) : Wine 8--- NOSE! This MotherFu**er just showed up. Christmas spice and dried flowers; explodes out of the glass; smoke; licorice. Fu**ing A. So good. Lively, rich, complex. Starts with a burst of fruit, then unfolds into savor. Coffee; oak that works. Young but balanced. Pure harmony. Wine of the day, hands down.

Probably the consensus choice for wine of the day when it opened up after being open a while. This had it all - a dark fruited and spicy nose, real weight and texture on the palate along with classic leather and meat notes, plus good balance and real length on the finish. It took a real effort to spit this out, and I went back for seconds (or was it thirds). Pricey but worth it. This needs and deserves time …
