DuMOL Mencía

rich sweetness. moving toward Syrah. deep and dark. interesting.

This was a fun one, got it with no prior experience of the varietal but I tend to like DuMol. Their website describes this as a passion project and puts the grape somewhere between Pinot and Syrah. I’d agree w that assessment -> visually it was pretty dark/opaque and looks more like Syrah. But at 13.5% and w med+ acidity it paired nicely w food (in this case smoked pork loin / nice match). Pop and pour. In the glass, youthfui dark magenta at the rim, shading immediately to dark maroon/black at the core. On the nose, currants and a tangy, almost tropical note. On the palate, fruity and exuberant, with black currants and blueberries standing out, paired with a suitably rough, rustic texture.

A rich fruit-forward Mencia with a more balanced tannic grip than is typical of Spanish Mencia. Interesting comparison to a Spanish example exhibiting typicity but relatively poor QPR.

Very rich but not too fruit forward. Give next bottle 1 more year.
