FIO, Fio Riesling, Mosel

Surprisingly advanced and too "old" for a 2013. Relatively dark color, seemed slightly oxidized and rather flattish. Not sure it was the bottle (extra protection from wax capsule) but it felt underperforming.

Excellent wine. Very complex with notes of Honey, Melon, wax/petrol (the nice one) and citrus. All very well integrated with the acidity. Could easily be stored for some more years to increase the complexity.

More opulent, tropical fruit, elegant on the palate, lemon, lemon curd, red apples, long finish, complex, solid concentration and more balanced than the 2016. Outstanding, 92p

In der Nase deutlich vegetabil mit Fenchel und etwas Sellerie, etwas Anis. Dazu viel Apfel, etwas Birne, ganz minimal mostig (aber sowas von angenehm), daneben sehr kräutrig mit viel Waldmeister. Am Gaumen mineralisch vibrierend, sehr hell, feinkörnig. Wunderbar marmorierende Säure, auch mit sehr prononcierter eigener Rolle. Das hat immens viel Zug und immer mal wieder zeigt sich die aromatische Komplexität aus der Nase in ihren verschiedenen Facetten. Diese Einschätzungen von Mosel Fine Wines kann ich wie so oft sehr gut verstehen. Ein wirklich sehr schöner Kabinett, der bestimmt auch noch viele Jahre Spaß machen würde. Eine sehr gute Balance - eine sehr schöne Nase. Wir hatten auch den Eindruck, dass Cassis (schwarze Johannisbeere), was man oft von Piesporter Weinen hört tatsächlich sehr gut passt. …

A Mosel Riesling from Philipp Kettern made in collaboration with Dirk Niepoort of Douro fame. Pale, almost neutral lime green color. Surprisingly dry and a bit closed nose with aromas of white flowers, apple blossom, some ripe yellow apple and a sweeter hint of lemon marmalade. Quite reductive on the nose and not very Riesling-like at all with notes of gooseberry, herbal notes, white stone fruit. On the palate bright and mineral, not overly generous, decent length. 86-88
