Decanted for 1 hour prior to serving. Dark ruby with slight garnet and clear at edge. Complex open and sweet aromas of strawberry jam, new leather, blood orange, bacon fat, grilled meat and licorice. Delicious medium bodied palate with full midpalate, bright acidity and extremely fine grained tannins and long slightly astringent finish. Lots of life left.

(From 375) This is spectacular. From a restaurant list in Boston cellared since release. Nose is of extreme complexity immediately on PnP. Pain d’épices, mushrooms, sour cherries on the nose. Sweet in the mouth — fairly long but less complex, and fading a bit. Correction; after 45 minutes the wine is integrating and becoming richer, longer and sweeter. Wow! Mushrooms now dominant on the nose but with extremely high toned violets, black olive, in the mouth it’s now filled out. …

Still very nice, although it hasn’t really evolved since my previous bottle. This was my last bottle. I would suggest to drink up any remaining bottles in the next 1-2 years.

Tasted blind. Easily recognizable as a Northern Rhône, lovely complex nose of barnyard, figs, old leather. It’s a really good wine, superbly balanced, blending secondary and primary notes, unbelievable that this is a 1988. Still kicking.

Decanted one hour. At first, greenish notes and wood dominate the palate. The balance improved after a couple more hours of air. Saline and vanilla notes emerged with light toned fruit and hints of cured meat. This vintage probably needs more time. It reminds me of the 2003, but unlike the 1999, which drank very well while young.

Well stored bottle. very high fill. Really gorgeous wine. Felt really young, very little tertiary notes. Nose was all fruit, green notes, and some meaty notes. Taste was full of moderated fruit, some hints of blood and olives, smokey notes, great acidity and mostly resolved tannins. Drank over 3 hours and saw very little development. No rush to drink.

2 years since the last one, finally getting rid of it's oak cloak slowly, still tight on opening, recommend a couple of hours of air if you are opening anytime soon. Red and black fruited nose mixed with a hint of thyme, pepper and cured meat, the mouth is streamlined, tamed tannins, black cherry, baking spices and a hint of smoke, decent finish but not a stunner but solid effort in the Guigal style....probably will hold on another 5/6 years. …

Medium ruby, some sediment in the glass after Coravin unfortunately (even though I only took out the first glass); medium intensity aromatics, red fruited, slightly gamey; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, integrated tannin, alcohol seems a bit high despite 13.5% listed on the bottle, not much depth or secondary complexity on the palate; medium length finish. Not as good as past experiences, and this bottle shows a bit of the heat of the vintage. 88-89

Nose: cigar box, cherry, dried rose petal, smoked meat, green olive; very expressive and layered Palate: cherry, cigar box, green olive, smokey, dried earth, blood orange; finish of green olive and smoke; med- body; high - acid Overall: nose is wonderful, the palate has good notes but it is maybe slightly tart or too acidic? Not sure. Tannins are a bit drying. Mouthfeel just feels off. You can really taste the terroir on this wine which is lovely.

Drinking very nicely, baking spices, blueberries , smokiness. The wine is open, present and a true representation of Syrah in NR.

Double-decanted for two hours. Dark garnet, dense color but clear. Nose of roasted beef, olives, garrigue and some smoked dried meat. Red current/berry fruit with good acidity and flavors that mimic the nose. Very classic, masculine style. Would pair well with roasted meats. Not going anywhere fast but drink over next five years.

Consistent with previous bottles. Delightful acidic profile. Sour cherries, raspberries, hint of leather, aniseed. Not a lot of tertiary nites here. Very balanced. Without like to have had more bottles to see where this goes (if anywhere). Aging glacially.

red colored full of fruit. Could hold up lots of years still. Powerfull nose with herbes, red fruit. full bodied wonderful texture, red fruit herbs and spice. long giving aftertaste. Excellent.

The Columbia Group - Two and a Half Years Later (Our Place) : Decanted for about 30 minutes and consumed over the next hour. It was enjoyable but never reached the expected level of WOW. Even though it is one of the, if not the, entry level bottling for Guigal, the medium bodied palate of black cherry, bramble and spice was interesting but not exciting. Maybe it needed yet more air? Maybe it was overshadowed by the 2003 Cos d'Estournel …

Fine acid in combination with teritary notes like forrest leaf, leather, smoke. It has a special appearance of curred meat. Paried with white pizza with mushroom and truffle salami. Amazing!

Dinner with the wine group (Sole Ristorante, San Mateo) : Decanted off a small amount of settled sediment. Medium ruby, clear; medium-intensity aromatics, black pepper, gamey spice; medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, balanced, integrated fruit, medium tannin, well integrated; finish is medium-plus length. A very solid northern rhone, maybe unexceptional but still very enjoyable. 92 Tasting again a few hours in bottle, this is balanced but lacks the intensity and complexity of the Chave St Joseph, by far. 91

Needed a looong time to wake up and air out the age. Mushroom, leaf, forrest floor, cigar, leather and some dried fruit. So much fun and great to drink. Drink up, but ensure you slow decant for 24h or decant in +5 hours.

The palate was dark cherry, plums, bramble, sweet pipe tobacco and hints of baking spices leading to a moderately long finish. Being a magnum this will count as 2 of the eight bottles of wine that my friends from NYC consumed last night. Yes, everyone took and Uber.

Holiday Champagne Gala (Park Ridge Country Club) : In Guigal flight(s). I opened this for fun to taste after the 1989 Mouline. Still good enough, this started a little musty and stayed earthy throughout. Still lots of olive, black pepper, braised meat, and black pepper coming through, combining for a classic (if tiring) Côte-Rôtie.

Seen the skyhigh ratings from the experts for this wine and the highly praised vintage - 2009 - I’m a bit underwhelmed. This is just a solid wine, well made, and nice to drink. I do not expect a big improvement anymore…..

Très bien, ce vin a très bien vieilli et ce vin semble pouvoir s’améliorer encore davantage en restant en cave / cellier pour 4-5 ans de plus environ. L’ouvrît aujourd’hui est aussi une très bonne idée, très apprécié de tous les amateurs et connaisseurs autour de la table.

Garnet. On the nose, a lovely fruit sweetness still. Fresh. Black pepper on both nose and palate - especially with some air. Fruits were led by a core of black cherry with red fruits - raspberry especially in evidence. Baking spices (vanilla) in the background and well integrated behind the aforementioned black pepper. The tannins have softened right out. In a really in a great place.

The 1989 Brune et Blonde is drinking well today, fleshing out in the decanter and offering up aromas of sooty red and black fruits, camphor, warm spices and dried petals. Medium-bodied, lively and seamless, with bright acids, melting tannins and a sapid finish, it's an elegant, classically proportioned wine in its prime. After two hours of aeration, this is immeasurably richer and more interesting than on opening, by the way.

Medium garnet. Pronounced nose of dried bramble, cherry, black pepper, leather, meat, smoke. Fully Developed. Med+ acidity, med+ fine tannins, med+ body and alcohol, long finish. Outstanding mature Côte-Rôtie, at peak drinking, can be held, for a few more years, but there is no reason to do so - it won't develop further, and there is a lovely balance of fruit and tertiary flavours.

Was looking forward to this after the last bottle but this was an odd showing I couldn't quite get my head around. Very very smoky and somewhat bitter at points that made me wonder if it was off. Aromatically pronounced nose of sesame, bacon fat, sage. The palate feels a bit vague to me, some red berries, hints of baking spice in the mid-palate and some salinity. It’s nicely balanced but feels like you could write some general notes on Syrah and they would apply here, there’s not a ton to set it apart on the palate. That said, nice nose, well balanced palate, it’s solid.

he immediate nose shows classic aged Syrah. Aged meat togheter with a mix of dried red fruits as well as some fresher darker fruits. Finishing off with a touch of tobacco, leather and spice. Every bottle of Guigal Cote Rotie I've had from the 70s and 80s has been utterly sublime, and this is no exception. On the nose: almost entirely tertiary with charcoal, dried flowers, a touch of cedar and barbecued notes. A fun wine to open and taste multiple times over a few hours. Fully mature black fruit gave way over time to more earth and mushroom. Bacon character also softened with more air. Easy to enjoy and savor.
