Etienne Calsac, Clos Maladries Grand Cru, Avize

Really lovely light pink rose - delicate but distinct light red fruit & roses, zippy acidity - delicious enough to make me hunt for more.

More complex on the nose than the Courtin at first w cider, florals, minerals, apple. Some sweetness and a bit of brioche. Cidery on palate. A bit soft on the finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

2020 vintage

So this is 40 (Noreetuh) : There's an oxidative character here, but it comes through in a way that muddles the fruit and makes it feel less clear/more blurry. It's rich, quite savoury with a roasted nutty and lightly smoky aspect to the aromatics, but doesn't have the focus or brightness of the other Champagnes around it.

Dsg 02/2023 Nose of raspberry and a lovely salinity. Very lively palate. While the Pinot Noir is present to color this blended rosé at 10%, it immediately dominates the attack. It's savory, with aromas of raspberry, tangy red fruits, and candy. The second part of the palate is much more lively and mineral, with chalk, wet stone, and iodine. The nodoguro (Ocean Drive) : Strawberry juice! So pretty and pure red fruit here with good minerality spine and acidity lifting this one throughout the palate.

Celebrating Chinese New Year and kicking of the Year of the Snake with this unique RM/grower Champagne. Interesting copper color. Medium nose that is minerally, perhaps a whif of iodine. Mild nose, light cherry strawberry. Zippy acidity and high carbonation up front. Austere, goes strawberry cranberry and very very dry. If you like low-maceration rose with lots of bubbles, this may be for you. Would probably benefit from a decant.

Strawberry and rhubarb, slighlty minerally - not particularly complex and didn't grow much over the course of 2.5 hours. 12/2023 disgorgement.

Needs a little air to get going. Classic blanc des blancs profile. Enjoyable bottle.

A very decent rose, good yeast and brioche, fruits are on point too with strawberries and grapefruit. Good acid attack as well, pretty linear stuff and builds to a mineral finish.

Sunday dinner at Wimborne. Drank in Riedel Riesling stemless. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, salmon pink colour. Thin legs. Fine bubbles. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries, strawberries, stony minerality, crushed chalk. Youthful. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of strawberries, red cherries, red apples, crush chalk, stony minerality. Medium+ fruity finish. Good quality. Blind bubbles tasting (That Wine Place) : Blinded. Not clear on the disgorgement date as the label was soaked, looks like 05/2022 with 2g dosage. 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir, 12% alcohol. Pale pink, pronounced notes of strawberry, red cherry, dry on the palate, full body, flavors of apricot, red fruits, med finish. Enjoyable

Very cool and interesting. Lots going on here, very complex and rich, not your typical champagne profile but everyone liked it a lot.

Everything Calsac does is delicious and this is no exception. Fresh-picked and juicy, this is a lovely Rose.

Tasting with Etienne Calsac (in Avize at the winery) : If my notes are accurate, this is from the walled plot in Azive, the backyard vineyard of his grandparents. 19 base. Lovely full deep strawberry pink. Wild strawberry fruit on the nose and palate. Mid weight, nicely fresh. Positive finish. Very decent. ***1/2

My last bottle of the Calsac Rose. Disgorged July 2018. Mostly Chard with about 4 grams of dosage. The bitter citrus edge faded mostly from last night, the wine better tonight--it needed air. The texture improved too. Green apple, strawberry, bright raspberry, blood orange with a spine of citrus pith and saline in the finish. Lighter, Chardonnay driven style. Reminded me of the Hebrart rose. Quite good and a decent value.

CCT put it perfectly - "strawberries and cream, with some brioche on the nose..." What a lovely, fresh Champagne. We couldn't resist opening a second bottle. 2018 base.

2016 base. I like this. Fresh and bright with excellent red fruit and florals: strawberries, spices and spicy, good minerals. Great grip . Good on the palate as well - good fruit, solid mousse. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

At Bite of Hong Kong Strawberries and cream, with some brioche on the nose. It has a fine bead and excellent cut with just enough of an oxidative style to add complexity without overwhelming the lovely fresh fruit. Outstanding bubbles. 91

A vibrant, delicious crowd pleaser. Beautiful coral color. Red berries and slightly tart strawberries on the palate with a hint of oak. Complex finish. 89% Chard. Buy more!!
