Ripe and dark fruited. Has some nice dried flower notes and plenty of earth. Full and fleshy, layered, long and expansive. Already offering plenty of pleasure.

First Dive into the Sea (Whale Club, Hong Kong) : Bottle 5445. Very interesting to compare this to the bottle that I drank earlier in the year, as there is no denying that this was in a significantly more approachable than the previous encounter. Quickly after being opened, this aromatic bomb quickly grew into the green of DRC nose. There is also some classical RSV notes here as well. The fruit is slightly stewed. In many ways more resolved than …

Opened at Whale in HK. Slow-oxed briefly before serving. This reminded me very much of the '20 DRC RSV from a few days before - intensely concentrated yet finessed and perfumed. Needs a lot more time and air to unwind properly, and I'd ideally forget about these for another decade before revisiting, unlike the '17s and '19s which are much more approachable now. Definite upside from here with patience. Still, lovely to try, and thanks to WG for sharing - …

Romanée Conti Dinner (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany) : There are two caveats that I want to provide here. The first is that Romanée St. Vivant is the least favourite of the DRC grand cru reds, and the second is that I remain sceptical of claims by others that the 2018s are beginning to open. Burgundy Al hit the nail on the head when suggesting that drinking this wine is an opportunity to sample noble structure than it is an exercise …

SLDS Big Guns at the International : Violets, earthy spice, lots of stems, graphite and lilies. Palate is finely detailed, silky tannins and great length. Has all the components and time will string it all together.

Medium expressive nose displaying pure subtle red fruit, strawberry, raspberry, rose, Vosne spice, ash, a hint of stem and limestone. Medium concentration, finely layered pure red fruit, silky, refined and delicate, bright acidity, limestone mineral, and a long subtle pure red fruit driven finish with a hint of stem and ash at the end. Based on this dinner, the 21s remind me of the 08 vintage but perhaps slightly more concentrated. As such, the 21s may develop quicker than usual, …

Domaine Leflaive Dinner with Brice de La Morandière (Oriole - Chicago IL) : Late night pop-and-pour, this has a completely enchanting aromatic start with so much Asian five spice with bold red cherry and berry. Flavors match up, but there is so much firm structure in the foreground right now, making me think this needs a decade+ in the cellar, but with brilliant potential.

The nose is so engaging. Rose petals, freshly grated ginger, pomegranate and cherry. It has so much going on, but is so airy and ethereal. It is like liquid velvet as it laps around the gums and the finish is expansive and oozes minerality.

This was so incredibly approachable with a very light but ethereal freahness. A gorgeous floral nose that keeps developing with more air. We drank this over 7 hours and it held up beautifully with great structure and poise. Delicious at this stage but will also likely age well and get even better. Best RSV around by far…

Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018 : Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) …

low fill. slightly browner bricking than la tache. complex, layered nose is very colourful and profound: notes of faded roses, truffles, spices, wood-smoke, and caramel. beautifully balanced, extremely penetrating, incisive, yet opulent and expansive flavour-- a melange of eidetic fruit and spices that is complex but seamlessly integrated. silken texture, enormous length, brilliant finish echoes and re-echoes

Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin) : This is a different level of complexity from the Corton, Ech, and GE. The RSV floral character is there with a bit more structure and a little spice. I found the mix led to a two-staged flavor crescendo that was quite pleasing. The increased power of this wine does lead me to want to put it in a different weight class which, in a way, detracts from …

Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin) : In a word, I found this wine mystical. It left me pondering much longer than any of the other wines in the lineup; a spell of time only matched by the length of the finish. On the nose, I found it almost savory. It was like a bit of salted butter on top of a warm brioche. Unexpected. The flavors and texture were just sublime with a …

Like the Jayer and Rousseau, this was perfection. Perfect cherries, spices, nuance and texture. Driven minerality which gives the wine a precision and clarity that other wines cannot achieve. Long and persistent finish. This is exactly what you would hope for in a DRC RC.

Consistent to my Dec 2016 note. Perfect balance and purity. I don’t see how there could be any more in a wine, this is an image of beauty. Seemingly endless flavours with the spellbinding bouquet to match. Decidedly superior to the La Tâche tonight, which was also excellent. No detailed notes tonight, but this was magic.

his exceptional bottle of the great Burgundy rouge was presented by Mr. Noah for the members of the 17th—all born in 1967—at Alla Prima. This vintage was vinified by Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy together with Aubert de Villaine, a historic period in DRC’s stewardship. The bottle’s condition was impeccable. A graceful secondary bouquet of violet and Asian herbs gave way to tertiary notes of fallen leaves and cedar. The beautiful, haunting remnants of the wine lingered in the glass long after …

Romanée-Conti v. La Tâche : Comparable nose to that on the La Tâche but with an added layer of secondary complexity including tobacco leaf. Stemmy florals, red cherries, and layers of secondary and tertiary Vosne spice. On the palate this has aged beautifully and offers firmly secondary red berry fruit flavours with tertiary spices. This was the closing wine of the evening and note writing has slowed down, but this was truly special.

Fresh baking spice with a hint of violets on the nose. Amalgamated red cherry and black raspberry notes. Tea and light cocoa powder. A still svelte acid core. The nose on this bottle was phenomenal with the palate falling just short of that. Complex and refined.

Truly an extraordinary nose with a kaleidescope of scents including the purest cherries, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet barnyard and the finest minerals. A 100-pt nose for sure and while the palate didn't quite match it, it came close. The texture is ethereal like the finest silk and the wine delivers classic cherry, violet and spice flavors with this wonderful floral essence and fine but subtle intensity. The finish is lighter but composed of fabulously complex notes of minerals and spices. It …

The Thirteenth Annual Stonefields Dinner (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) : Sheer perfection... Nose is entoxicating, powerful, enthralling and humbling all at the same time. How did I get to this place...to drink this wine...in this moment? I am a lucky man. Served at the Domaine as a mystery wine, it clearly had age as it the nose was sweet and fully mature, with a bit of truffle notes coming up. On the palate, the soft and smooth fruit was quite sound and the acidity vibrant. While this was plenty old, it was not fading - it held nicely in the glass. The finish seemed to be held together by the acidity. The finish was short but beautiful while it lasted - …

A "billionaire" stuff, I'm fortunate enough to have it at age of 28. The 1986 vintage wasn't a monumental vintage of DRC, except for the Montrachet case. But still, words are too pale to describe a wine like this. Light grenat color without any ageing sign, showing its youth. The nose was a merge of rose petal(not really a withered rose LOL) ,cherries at their quasi-maturity stage, and a collection of spices just like Indian Bazarre. The aromas were so …

The 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti was on fire, drinking just the way you’d expect and like it to. The aroma was comprised of aniseed, juniper, sandalwood, rose petals, balsamic and a touch of vegemite. In the mouth it was complex, layered, lacy and cerebral. There’s so much going on but it has such great poise and restraint. The finish is full of what the Japanese would term umami and every sip was an absolute delight.

Acquerello dinner-La Paulee SF 2012 : I had the wonderful opportunity last evening to add a wine to my all time top 10. As part of several 'pre LP' dinners, a most generous guest opened a mag of 52 RC. Kruger's 75th (Corsair) : Another DRC when after it is poured, everyone takes a sip, yet no one has anything to say! Absolutely stunning. Very meaty nose, touch gamey? Now at an age when bottle variation results in a game of Russian roulette. Some bottles make you wonder why anyone ever made a fuss. Other bottles leave you speechless, kneeling down before your glass thanking God you lived long enough to pop the cork. This bottle was definitely in the latter camp. Reducing the experience to a tasting note would be akin to blasphemy.

Tasted from Jeroboam. Light Cherry in color from candlelight. Soft cherry flavors and some soy and spices. My nose knew this would be a winner. Perfect balance and roundness on the palate with a soft silky texture. The flavors comprised of again light cherry and strawberry nuances.
