Big wine. Deep ruby, some garnet. Plenty of rich fruits still, red and black. Warm spices. Herbs. Still some ripe tannins. Decent length. Carries the quite high alcohol well but still a hefty drink. Fully mature but no panic to drink now.

Windswept & Wild: Wines of the Islands Tasting; 8/15/2025-8/24/2025 (K&L Wine Merchant - San Francisco) : So floral here, great nose. Dark red flowers, red fruits but it doesn’t last, and a gentle forest funk. Dark earthiness, dark flowers and fruits. Fruited graphite, same fruits from the nose. Good juiciness. Damp earthy undergrowth with firm bitterness on the finish. Nice juiciness. The aromas dominated over the palate here.

Lightly savory (olives, brine) with darker fruit notes. Slick mouthfeel with a touch of tannin, and some visible alcohol. A little too slick, this lacks structure. Quite modern and perfumed. Unexciting.

Part of a tasting at K&L. Might be some bottle issues, but found some slight funk and barnyard in this that overwhelmed the ability to enjoy the underlying fruit and medium_ acidity. 85 points.

deep ruby with garnet rim. very expressive in nose and palate with violet, ripe red cherry, maturing blackberry, cassis fruit laced with clove and cinnamon, some vanilla, pepper, and earthy notes. the full body is matched by the high acidity and strong, chalky tannins in very good balance. gains in amplitude and subtlety mid palate. long finish with complexity and a delightful raspberry note. drinkable now, but surely one that will drink better in five or so years. 14.5% AbV; …

[opened but not decanted an hour ahead; some fine sediment at bottom of bottle; served at cellar temperature]. dark opaque purplish ruby with garnet rim and full body. complex and developed nose showing leather and earthy notes among the wild herbs, dark macerated plums and currants and a very lovely floral lift of violets. quite bold and still structured yet very fresh in mouth. spice accents and wild herbs thoroughly permeate the fruit, as tertiary notes impart the fig flavours …

Never drank a wine from Sardinia before! Ninety-minute decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Significant sediment in screen but none in the bottle. During decant, very juicy nose reminiscent of sacramental wine from my altar-boy days. Wine was clear; deep ruby from bowl to rim with a small clear halo. After resting, nose had opened up to raspberries with an overlay of Italian herbs. In the mouth, the flavor was mulberry with some sage and rosemary. Nice balance overall …

I always liked carignano-based wine from Sardinia and this Barrua (made also with CabSauv) tells a story mirroring Sassicaia, Rich wine with notes of leather, graphite, licorice and underbrush melt with some ripe red fruit. The limit of this Barrua is that - at the end - it is hard to tell it is made of Carignano because the cepage is covered, but the outcome is undoubtly seductive.

Vertical degustation of Barrua with Friends. Lineup: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015. Results: 2012 first ranked, 2010 second, 2015 third. 2011 was unfortunately corked. 2015, a very good wine by any token and also the one that all tried as first, some thought it was too young, some thought it had less french grapes in the mix (that at least on the official web site is not disclosed).

Slow ox for one hour. The nose on this a bit stinky with some barnyard aromas dominating. The wine shows ripe plum and blackberry, herbs and earth in a round, plump sort of style. Overall it tasted on the one hand a little overdone and on the other a little over the hill. I am wondering whether this was a bad bottle or something.

Visiting Rome and Tuscany; 6/18/2019-7/2/2019 (Lazio and Tuscany, Italy) : The grapes for AgriPunica's Barrua bottling are sourced from their Narcao and Barrua estate vineyards in Basso Sulcis. Comprised of approximately 85% Carignan, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, it is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (30% new). The 2014 iteration is a deep ruby, highly aromatic offering that is packed with ripe black fruit, lavender, white flowers, sandalwood, espresso and licorice. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic and with …

Had this one with some fine italian dishes, at first served too warm, cooled down with some ice, a bottle like this one with 15% ABV will always benefit from a cooler served temperature, fullbodied on the palate, some herbal tones, red dense fruit , would say cherry, for me too much international made, lacking the italian or better sardinian terroir showing, good but on the other hand a little boring, needs more time in the cellar but works today …

Dark ruby red color, earthy mixed berry nose, lucious mixed berry fruit, just a touch of acidity with smoother out tannins. The fruit laden finish was of medium length. We thought this was a very enjoyable complex wine and it worked well with grilled rib eye steaks. Another $40-ish value wine.

From a magnum, purchased at a restaurant, though my notes echo those from a bottle I opened from my cellar some 14 months or so ago. Benefited from an hour+ decant. In short, time (and format) have enhanced what I observed then: rich plum notes along with a touch of fennel, soy and herbs. Plenty of structure. Such a great QPR, often drank too young, before the oak integrates.
