Time has been kind to this one. Tough and dense in its youth, I had little hope, but stuck a couple of bottles away to check on its progress. Now, ten years out from vintage, it's actually coming around. Softening slightly, showing some dark fruit but no longer so rough and rustic. My last bottle, but honestly I think another few years might help it. Pleasant weeknight wine that paired well with beef Stroganoff.

Fresh, strong, unripe redcurrant fruits on the nose. Hint of vanilla jelly beans. A strong, dark red fruits wine on the palate. Some spirit attributes - too young still? Great structure - lots of powerful tannins and red fruit. Very dry finish.

Still rocking! Lovely old Grenache, good fruit, integrated tannins. Comes in with raspberry, blackberry, some leather plum, a little tar. Great mid palate, fruit, fruit, acid, tannins. Long, satisfying finish. Had I had any idea it would hold on this long I would have kept that last bottle a little longer...

In its prime !! Really tasting great right now !! Although some reviewers of this wine will not accept comments and leave poor ratings with notes like, "do the job", I hope I can provide rationale for my rating. Perfect cork after a over a decade in the bottle, easily removed. Consumed over two days. This wine started a little tight, but opened up quickly and showed better the next day. On day two the fruit was still fresh and …

Still not great. The fruit is decent for what it is, but rather anonymous. I don't think I could tell you what grape this was made from or where it was from if tasted blind. It's heavy and a bit smoky. No wood showing though. Drinkable, but, kind of "why?" Didn't work as well with lamb wraps as well as I'd thought, but it would likely be better with a grilled burger or steak or barbecue.

Darker and deeper than the regular cuvee This follows on the nose, with fragrant though subtle blue and black fruits. Clearly ripe but compact. Very clean with a touch of vapour and black pepper. The palate is creamy and broad with some light sweet touches, then it tightens up and in come the tannins! Lots of power and intensity, excellent acidity. Serious and stimulating with fine sandy tannins on the longer finish, which shows redder fruits. Going to need some …

Easy drinking. Satisfying garrigue aromas coupled with decent tannins. Surprisingly, the 2012 is not as heavy as the same wine has been in other years.

Good Value. Given a short decant, 45 or so. deep crimson/ruby, opaque and bright at the edge. Medium bodied, I get bright black and red fruits on the nose with pleasant garrigue qualities, some menthol, and some root beer. Front is blackberry with some black cherry notes, earthiness and cough drop towards the middle. Medium(-) acidity, firm smokey tannins towards the finish integrated with dark red berry. Feels a little sharp on the finish, not so much heat, just texture …

An appealing nose full with jammy cherry, bubblegum and baking spices On the palate, the fruit is sweet and jammy but the alcohol comes through in mid-palate and finish. The tannins are fully integrated and developed. This wine is fully ready. Excellent value for money!

Even one of the least wines of Domaine la Soumade pushes around wines costing over twice as much, here the Cuvee Prestige, a classic Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre blend for $20. Serving it with 6 other wines at meals, we kept coming back for more of this. Opaque dark purple, effusively aromatic, richly flavorful on mouth entry, and well structured by bright acidity and smooth but drying tannin. Finishes with a deliciously long blackberry and blueberry. Aging perfectly with years left …

Opaque black to the edge. Enticing aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Lushly silky and juicy entry in the mouth with superb concentration. Glides down the throat when swallowed. Nothing astringent or sour. Kept coming back to this for 5 days during the meals as the most delicious wine on the table. Overall, one of the greatest GSM blends made, with 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre.

70% grenache, 20% syrah, 10% mouvredre quite big mouth feel for a grenache dominant southern Rhone. I would not guess so much Grenache, but still yummy.

I enjoyed a previous bottle of this enough to reload, finding it a good example of an old-school S. Rhone. This bottle is more worrying. It showed loads of alcohol and some pepper. Palate wasn't in the best shape as it was vacation and just not ideal setting. However, hoping it was an off bottle.

Dark purple, delicious red raspberry and blackberry, smooth texture, and fine balance of structuring acidity and tannin. The antithesis of harsh, sour, and thin. A reliable sign of a great winery is that even its least wines are superb and are great ambassadors for their more expensive ones, which describes Domaine Soumade Prestige in spades. Outstanding among inexpensive Rhones.

Really nice wine. I have come to loathe most Southern Rhone wines except Pegau, finding that modern interpretation on Grenache, with medicinal notes and 16% alcohol are just way over the top for me. This was a refreshing change. At 14.5 it still brings appreciable concentration, but without overextraction and bitterness. It has remarkable complexity, but its just a baby. I'll hold my remaining bottle for five years and I'll consider more if I see them. Good stuff.

This score is based on potential and value. Still young, needs 2-3 years more. Tight but as unwinds green stem gives way to budding lushness of black and red fruit. Great mouth full. Will let rest of my bottles wait, but looking forward to what seems promised.

This $21 least wine from Domaine Soumade played the role of Sylvester Stallone from the movie Rocky in our dinner featuring marinated, grilled, and herbed lamb chops - the clear overachiever that stood up against an armada of top wines from famous, expensive, or highly rated wineries, including Argiolas from Sardenia, Beaucastel from Chateauneuf du Pape, Pax from California, Artemis in McLaren Vale Australia, and Domain Vendemio in southern France. The Cuvee Prestige came from the wrong side of the …
